I lived near Cuero(Arneckeville) when they went to state in '85,'86 and won it in '87! I am still a fan except when they play the Texans!I think they can win tonight if they keep the mistakes to a minimum.

I'LL SAY.....

Cuero offensively short hitch not working against a fast defense, might go after the middle of the field like their last drive. La Vega offensive line is huge and RB has some quickness and big runner. Defense needs to hold them here

My guess here is MODOC is just faster than Cuero overall. Those two DE's the Pirates have are darn good. They're both very hard to slow down.

MODOC does have a fast secondary and they're pretty big. Cuero needs to come out and get a score on their first possession to stay in this one.

I think when the Gobblers didn't answer that LV touchdown when they pulled ahead 28 - 21 was big. LV scoring afterwards to make it 35 -21 put the game away.

Feel bad for the Gobbler seniors, but it was another great year for the Gobblers!

Wait until next year!;)

He can, but its up to the players. The Offensive play calling won't get them there, believe me. The defense is where it has to happen and Cuero's D tonight was nonexisistant.

Give some credit to Parr, He is a stud. We can talk about all the what if's all we want. Bottom line, you have to put him in a class above anyone this group has ever played. Great job LV better team did win tonight. Great job Gobblers. Again and Again you guys find a way to have a shot each and every year. We will once again loose alot of great Srs. But you guys did leave it in good hands. With your leadership you showed the younger guys what it takes. They will remember and be ready to take what you showed em and Be ready next year.
Thanks Srs. it was a fun ride. The whole town will always remember.

Congratulations to the LaVega Pirates. They have a good solid ball team. Another good season by the Cuero Gobblers, the only problem is in Cuero we believe we should win it every year and while most teams would consider this a successful season, the majority of people don't in Cuero.

My 1st half game analysis:
LaVega came out and hit us in the mouth and that was what I was afraid of. They were way more aggressive then we were and that carried them to a 14-0 lead. I do not understand why we pooch kick the opening kickoff to the 35. IMO that sends the message to your kids that we are not good enough and don't believe we can stop LaVega from running one back. Cuero had no answer for LaVega's power run game. The Gobblers lost the battle in the trenches and did everything we said they couldn't afford to do. They didn't tackle and the front four got pushed around all night. I was not pleased that we NEVER blitzed nor did we ever change personnel on the front four. In my opinion I think you should take some defensive chances and throw some blitz's in and give LaVega some different looks. Why not try to penetrate and create havoc in the backfield? Offensively I'm not real sure what the game-plan was. I figured we new our passing game would set up our run and we did just the opposite. We could not move those big defensive linemen and LaVega had 8 in the box from the get go. You can not really blame Jackson or who we had back there because their was no holes to go though. We flat out got beat at the line of scrimmage.

2nd half analysis:
The first drive was a must score drive and we couldn't put it in. However we found a way to make LaVega go three and outs twice and we took it to the endzone and tied it up 21-21. We flat out played them in the 3rd quarter. When Lavega scored and made it 27-21 it was Cuero's job to put together the drive of the season AND THEY COULD NOT DO IT. From that point on LaVega had the game in hand and never looked back.

I do not think we were out matched. I thought LaVega was beatable but we just had to play an almost perfect game. Cuero had an opportunity to gain control of the game and they could not do it. LaVega won tonight because they EXECUTED better than Cuero and they won the battle up front. Somewhere along the line our boys have to accept the challenge and say I am going to whip that guy who lines up across from me and make a play, and we just never did.

I applaud the LaVega game-plan because they said we run the ball and if you can stop us then line up and do it. Chris Parr is a great back and he may be one of the best I have seen in the 3A level over the past 5 years. I think I would put him in the top 5. LaVega did nothing special, they just beat us with what they do best and we never had an answer for it.

What lost it for Cuero?
Everyone wants to ask where the blame goes? Is it the coaching? Is it the players? Well tonight I think it was a little of both. Give LaVega a lot of credit, they flew to the football and they made it difficult for Cuero to execute, however I do believe we did not get the most out of what we had to work with. Their are many of things that we can say is the problem for Cuero not getting to and winning the big one, but tonight the Cuero Gobblers did not do the "little things" which matter this deep in the playoffs. Do I think LaVega was a better team then Cuero - NO, they just executed better tonight.

Boy it sure feels bad losing, and I feel sorry for all the seniors that put in a lot of hard work hoping for a state championship. Hopefully a few can play at the next level. Now for the game. LV was the better team period. I read that they had more speed, but I disagree. They were bigger and won it in the trenches. After we we tied it at 21 it looked as if we exerted all of our energy in the comeback and didn't have enough at the end. After that, they just flat out pounded it on us. Parr was a great running back but their best athlete was #4. If Cuero is going to be successful getting over this hump, I believe they need to utilize more big boys. Had some big JV'ers on the sideline that sure seems like we could utilize more. Having said that, great season Gobblers, good luck LV, ya'll have a heck of a team. I also look for great things next year from Arndt, Jackson, Pargman and the rest of the Gobblers as they make another run. On a side note, it was a very clean game. I was expecting something different from LV, but I was wrong.

Boy, was I OFF on my prediction for this one!!!

Congrats to La Vega, the Pirates proved that last week was a misnomer, in the sense that they were a REALLY good team beating a really good team (Navasota)...

Sounds like the MODOC Pirates were more than up to the task yesterday.

Congrats to Cuero, the Gobblers had an outstanding season and just missed ANOTHER chance to play in the state championship game. Congrats to the Cuero community for enjoying such a fine season.

LaVega executed when they had to last night. I believe their coaching staff made all the right calls. From the TD right before the end of the half, to little out routes that got them first downs, and screen plays that our DE's couldn't sniff out.

On defense they gave the Cuero receivers no cushion, therefore the little out routes and bubble screens went nowhere.
Why didn't Cuero then try to go over the top a little more? They had a better chance at that because #5 for Lavega almost had a pick six two times on the out routes.

Trent Jackson played great, the young fella looked a little down early, but I thought he played great and showed a lot of toughness that we hadn't seen yet this year.

Chris Parr and the QB (Swanson?), they can just be added to the list of season killers for the Gobblers. Athletes that just came to play and beat Cuero.

So heres the reasons why Cuero has not been able to get over the hump.
2004- Case keenum (AW)
2005- Jeremy Kerley (hutto)
2006 - Michael Buse and Beatty (wimbo)
2007- Mike Hicks (CS)
2008- Chris Parr

Same stuff from Headhunter and others. Your team loses and you start to question the playcalling, use of players , etc. Here lies the truth - Cuero has an excellent football program. The further they go in the playoffs the better the talent and performance of all teams. Every year there are 10 -12 REALLY good teams in 3A and Cuero is usually one of them. Newsflash - High Scool teams with bigger, faster, stronger players usually win. LaVega outperformed Cuero on this night, bottom line. Leave the coach alone.

when you see the same patterns over the last few years with LOTS OF TALENT coming thru Cuero also, the questions arise about the coaching.

I hate to hear people question coaches on here and in the stands, b/c if they really knew the deal they would be on the sidelines calling the plays. And I admit to really dogging the coaching last year, but this year I though our Talent could get us by.

LaVega just had more players, there was not much size difference.

thats the thing. We question the play calling alll year!! Win or lose the play calling is always a hot topic in Cuero with Reeve.

Yeah, LV flat out played us last night. They demolished out D. Blew us out up front and when you do that, you win. LV was the better team last night.

No your wrong, we question stuff even when we win. Coach Reeve did not lose this game, LaVega out executed Cuero. Was Cuero capable of winning? - YES and they had a chance to. It is not my place to tell anyone what should have been done because if you know anything about football then you know it is a lot easier to call it from the stands. Does it get frustrating when you continuously get to the semi-finals and don't win? - YES, Of course anyone can justify that he did a good job or he didn't do a good job.

The thing is, Cuero fans want to see us win a game when we are not supposed to. We are normally the favorite in every game we play up until the semi-finals when most people would say the teams out of region III are stronger. And I agree, for the most part they have been better - BUT THEY HAVE ALL BEEN BEATABLE- many of us want to see Cuero utilize all their talent and GET THE MOST OUT OF THEIR PLAYERS. IMO our losses in the playoffs over the last 5 years I felt we had just as much talent as the other teams and we failed to make it happen. Yes some times it was a little luck by others and sometimes we screwed up. Yes we would like to see US (CUERO) outcoach someone else.

I will be the first one down their to praise those coaches and kids when they win the big one.

I always go back to this comment - Only in Cuero are people pissed off about making it to the semi-finals.

We have come to find out that the 3A level of football has become quite competetive with the number of athletes on each team. When you get to the end of the playoffs, the teams with the most athletes will usually when......we simply did not keep the lineman fresh like LV did. Do we not have the athletes.....I believe we do. Good coaches get the most out of ALL of their players, not just the select few that we see on the field. We have kids on the sideline that have the potential to be contributors during the playoffs, but for some reason the sideline is where they stay.

Maybe the powers that be in Cuero will understand that 3A football isn't like it was years ago when you could play both ways. The level of competition is so high right now, you need maximum effort out each player on every play, and right now Cuero can't give that at the end of the game!

I would beg to differ on MODOC being a one trick pony. Do they have an exceptional group of players right now? Sure they do, but MODOC usually has some very good players year in and year out. In 2000 they played Gatesville at McKamie Stadium, had a lead going into the 4th quarter and darn near pulled off a huge road win against the state champions. That LaVega team finished 4th in district if I remember right, but they gave Gatesville all they wanted and then some.

What I believe will keep them going strong is their coaching staff. When they changed a few assistants they really took off. My guess is that when Coach Williams decides to retire (Have no clue how long he wants to coach.) that Coach Hyde (MODOC's DC) might possibly get a shot at getting the head coaching job there one day. Just a guess on my part, but he could take and keep them very competitive year in and year out.

This is the first time for me to get on here since the game. Headhunter and HM33 said it all and I only have a few questions.

Did Brent Johnson play any at all in his last game as a Cuero student? I feel he was truly a team player all year and earned the right to play the last game of his senior year.

Why didn't we mix up the RB's? Trent did an awesome job and I'm excited we can have him for 3 more years, but when he wasn't in the backfield, they knew we were going to pass the ball. Cuero's offense is very predictable. When certain players go on the field, you know exactly if we are going to run or pass. Cole could have been used on offense and defense!

Like someone said already, there was a lot of talent standing on the sideline not playing.

Its good to be a Gobbler! We are loosing a lot of great leaders and they did a awesome job in the 3rd coming back. Year in and year out, Cuero puts out excellent teams! We don't rebuild, we reload!

GO MEAN GREEN!

I'm not from Cuero or LaVega, but I was at this game, and I would like to make a few comments. First off, I can't believe you folks from Cuero who are questioning your coaching staff. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves! Ninety-nine percent of the rest of Texas would absolutely be thrilled to death to have been playing in the Semi-Final game for the 4th time in 5 years. Secondly, although Cuero had an outstanding football team, LaVega was just better. Before this game I personally thought that Cuero would win, but after watching it, I was wrong. Quite simply, LaVega was just the better team. You folks from Cuero need to just realize that LaVega was a better team, and that you didn't lose because of your coaches calls or decisions on who played what position or how many plays. Being a traditional powerhouse is a good thing. Don't ruin that by trying to blame a loss on your coaching staff! Go Gobblers Go! Good luck next year!

LV being the better team has already been said by some Gobbler fans, and I was one. I never blame the coaching staff, I think they are great. I do wonder, as ANY fan does, why some of the talent on the sidelines doesn't get in the game? Namely Johnson and Pargman. They need to be on the field SOME. We also have some young, talented big boys who could give the O-linemen and D-linemen a much needed break.

Your right. But like you said, your not from Cuero. I think the coaches do a great job with the kids and since the La Vernia game, the play calling has been darn good. The comments are not just from the La Vega game, they have been made all year even when we were winning.

Yes, La Vega was the better team that night, your right. I just had a couple of questions, and from the stands, I saw what I saw. I don't mean to offend anyone, just speaking how I feel. We are blessed to go this deep every year for the last 5 years and have the coaches we have. The quality of players and the talent Cuero has is unbelievable though.
