i feel sorry for cuero. they play in a weak district and mostly weak region so its difficult for them to get the experience of playing teams with the same talent level and that always hurts them in the semifinals.

Congratulations to the Gobblers, they came in and took care of business, they are headed to the Division 1 State-semifinals for the 4th time in 5 years. From what I hear they will play Waco LaVega in Roud Rock at the Palace on Parmer on Saturday night.

Cuero threw for 280 and rushed for about 230.
Arndt threw for 4 TD and I think Brent Johnson two TD's
Glover had a big night receiving and Armstrong had two TD receptions. Harryman also contributed with 3 carches.

Defense played great, Rangnow and Ruiz ran sideline to sideline and Boothe had a pick 6 that was called back due to a mysterious pass interference call.

Overall the kids from Cuero did just what they were supposed to. They came in prepared for the LaFeria Lions and they executed well. LaFeria was not a bad football team, I was impressed with their offense. Normally you see a different offense (run oriented) from a valley team. Cuero is just that quick and diciplined and made them look bad, I can see that their offense would be tough to stop if you played against a team that did not have a lot of speed. LaFeria was just outmatched man for man.

I am not sure on all the stata so I will let someone who has the accurate ones post them.

Cuero routs upset-minded Lions

November 29, 2008 - 9:51 PM

CORPUS CHRISTI - Unfotunately, heart doesn't always win football games.

Despite a spirited effort by the La Feria Lions, Cuero jumped ahead 35-0 at one point before coasting to a 55-13 win over the Lions in their Division I-3A state quarterfinal game at Buccaneer Stadium in Corpus Christi on Saturday night.

The bigger and faster Gobblers (11-1) scored on all six of their first half possessions as they pounced on La Feria, which saw its magical season end at 7-6.

"We could've folded (after getting behind early), but we showed a lot of character," La Feria head coach Elifonso Esquivel said. "But give a lot of credit to Cuero. They had the speed and the size. I wouldn't be surprised if they end up state champs.

"But we never gave up and we showed the true heart of a Lion."

Against the Lions, Cuero moves on the to the state semifinals to face either Navasota or La Vega.

Gobbler quarterback Tyler Arndt was masterful in the first half, going 8-of-11 passing for 204 yards and four touchdowns. He finished the night with 283 yards through the air.

Wideout Robert Armstrong made the most of his first-half grabs, as his three receptions each went for touchdowns (5, 11 and 70 yards).

The unsung heroes of the rout were the Cuero defense and special teams, however.

Superb defense and great returns on special teams enabled the Gobblers to start in La Feria territory on three of their six drives.

Cuero's defense held the Lions to 71 yards on offense before half, including 10 rushing.

"Field position killed us," Esquivel said. "And you can't do that against good football teams."

La Feria did not get its first points with 1:28 left in the second quarter.

That's when Raul Bowman hit Alfredo Gonzalez (4 catches, 42 yards) on a pretty 19-yard scoring pass. Gonzalez made a great catch in front of a Cuero defender to get the Lions on the board. Brian Vasquez booted the point after.

But the good times didn't last long.

On the next drive, despite being pushed back thanks to a Stephen White sack, Arndt heaved a bomb and found a streaking Armstrong for the 70-yarder as time expired in the first half.

After intermission, La Feria tightened up on defense and held Cuero to 13 points.

The Lions' final TD came after Colie Long scooped up a fumble and returned it to the Cuero 42 with 36 seconds left in the game.

On the next play, Long hit Randy Rodriguez over the middle. Rodriguez bounced off a would-be Gobbler tackler and trotted into the end zone for the final margin.

Esquivel was gracious to the legion of fans sitting on the Lions'visiting side, which stood and cheered throughout the evening.

Despite the ending, Esquivel said he was proud of his odd-defying Lions as they made school history by advancing to the third round for the first time ever.

"We're very proud of these guys," he said. "We had our backs against the wall all year and every game was a playoff game. We were state quarterfinalists for the first time and that's a great accomplishment."

Passing game lifts Gobblers

November 29, 2008 - 11:39 p.m.
CORPUS CHRISTI - Cuero receiver Robert Armstrong had an idea the Gobblers were going to throw the ball against La Feria, and he wasn't disappointed.

Armstrong caught six passes for 123 yards and three touchdowns, and Isaiah Glover added six catches for 117 yards and one touchdown as Cuero cruised to a 55-13 Class 3A, Division I quarterfinal win over the Lions on Saturday night at Buccaneer Stadium.

"All week in practice we've been throwing a lot and I was ready for this game," Armstrong said. "Our passing game's been looking good. We have a good quarterback and our receivers do what they need to do in the passing game."

The Gobblers rolled up 279 of their 507 total yards through the air while improving to 11-1 and advancing to the semifinals for the fourth time in five years. Cuero will play Waco La Vega, a 34-28 overtime winner over Navasota on Friday night. The semifinal game will be played Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Round Rock ISD Stadium.

"We had a good game plan coming in," said Cuero quarterback Tyler Arndt, who was 14 of 18, including the four touchdown passes. "They did a good job with the run early so we had to open it up a little bit with the passing game."

Cuero scored on all six of its possessions in the first half and had a commanding 42-7 lead at halftime. The Gobblers led 35-0 before La Feria (7-6) scored on a 19-yard pass from Colie Long to Alfredo Gonzalez.

Arndt threw touchdown passes 4, 11 and 69 yards to Armstrong, the latter coming on the final play of the second quarter, and a 32-yard scoring pass to Glover. The Gobblers also scored on runs of 4 and 7 yards by Brent Johnson.

"We got Isaiah involved and Chance (Harryman, who had two catches for 39 yards) too, and not just Robert and that's a good thing for us," Arndt said. "We've got to keep them going."

Armstrong also had three punt returns for 72 yards and just missed a fourth touchdown when he was ruled down on the La Feria 1-yard line after a 27-yard reception in the third quarter. Armstrong and Glover, who rushed one time for 8 yards, also played in a Cuero secondary that limited the Lions to 56 yards of passing through three quarters.

"Robert had a great game and Isaiah had a great game too," Cuero coach Mark Reeve said. "I thought all four of our secondary guys played really well. If they wouldn't have, we would have had trouble stopping them."

Cuero added 1-yard touchdown runs by Cole Pargmann in the third quarter and Troy Ruiz in the fourth quarter. The Lions recovered a Cuero fumble and scored on a 42-yard pass from Long to Randy Rodriguez with 23 seconds remaining in the game.

"We started off hot just like we did last week," Arndt said. "We got the momentum early and just took them out of the game."
