It's hard to listen to high school broadcasts on the radio. Most of them are ridiculous homers that are worse to listen to than Joe Buck and Joe Theismann combined.

I was of course pulling for West Texas, Monahans and Sweetwater but it wasn't meant to be. Both of these teams are finished for the year but both should hold their heads high. Sweetwater you represented our side of the state with pride. You played hard smash mouthed football. Trust me, I know exactly how you guys feel after this loss. Some say immediately we will do it next year but for seniors that is little consolation. They have to realize football is over forever for many. It is a cold reality and all of us old folks can help them adjust by shaking some hands in the coming week and take the time to let them know how proud you are of how they played this year. Good Season Sweetwater, hold your heads high.

Now Liberty Hill, go get after Bridgeport, all of their weaknesses were exposed last night. One of them will no longer be undefeated next week, should be a good one.

Gimme a break. I'm with Stownhorse. Why the heck does it matter at this point? This site is not intended for calling kids out in any negative light. If you can't say something positive about a kid that has just laid it all on the line and was obviously extremely frustrated at the end of the game, just shut up and show you can win with a little class.

Im no saying it was right but Im not saying he was totally in the wrong. Its hard to go through 2 a days, team meetings, position meeting, all the weight lifting, the 2 1/2 - 3 hour practices every mon. - thurs., the big Friday nights in The Mustang Bowl, the death row of district 2, for it just to end without showing any sort of emotion.... be realistic.

Its not the players. its the play calling.

You can run alot more plays out of the wing t. Thats where the misdirection helps you. you can run a fake to the fullback 3 plays in a row, then give it to him the next. Thats why it works well for yall. Just sitting in the stands I have a hard time following who has the ball.

My thoughts on the game:

I thought in the first half the LH offense was defended very well. Possibly second best during the streak next to Celina in 06. In the end the LH offense put constant pressure on Sweetwater's defense and they could not go four quarters toe-to-toe.

Sweetwater's offense really had one big play which led to their only score. The big play was a quick pass to an uncovered receiver down to the five yard line. In about two plays Sweetwater punched it in. Other than that there were not many first downs for Sweetwater. Over the course of the game there was domination by the LH defense.

Lastly, I was quite surprised by the lack of discipline from Sweetwater. I remember in the second quarter a receiver punching our cornerback twice on consecutive plays (no calls by the officials). Another time another player on the LH sideline stomped one of our players (no call). Another time a player lost his cool and was ejected from the game. These are the ones I remember, but it seemed that Sweetwater lacked discipline when the going got tough.

Overall, I expected more self control from a well coached, tradition rich program.

Come on

Words speak louder than actions.

From what I hear, the LH players were talking crap to the sweetwater players about the score.

Dont question their discipline when yall were probably the instigators.

Accept the win and carry on. Dont trash talk a program who apparently you thought was the classiest team in Texas.

Crap talking takes place on the field. The difference is some player chose to react and some didn't. They just all happened to come from one side.

I never once said anything about the classiest team in Texas.

Either or, football players arent mommas little angels on the field. At the bottom of the piles or not, you play dirty. No team can say they havent punched someone, or got a cheap shot in. At the bottom of the pile you get choked, pinched, ankles twisted, hair pulled, and eye gouging till the pile starts to get up.

You obviously thought very highly of their program to question their tradition.

It was great to meet everyone from Sweetwater and see some familiar ones from brownwood. (You too, Mr. Nasty) Best wishes on your season next year.
Great first half by your defense. They were stellar. Sure things got a little heated most likely from frustration but it's unfortunate that someone has to lose. I hope our boys weren't trash talking. I know I didn't hear any waiting for the DLers to arrive and they were nearly all in the locker before anyone showed up.

Or how about when your up by 4 TD's and your crowd is still chanting and taunting us? Are you serious? There is no way you can try to turn those events at the end of the game into us being classless. Because of the actions of Sweetwater players the refs didn't even let us kneel on the ball. The refs ran 1:30 off the clock at the end of the game to just end the thing.

No the fact was the refs felt the game needed to be called because of the conduct on the field. So they literally stood over the ball and ran out the remander of the game.

It was actually a closer game than the score looks. We scored two of those TD's really quick back to back. I thought it was a good clean game until about 4 min left then it got out of hand. Part of the problem were the refs. They let it get that way.

Maybe making excuses for poor behavior or trying to place blame or attention on someone else might cause it. Perhaps LH shoving the ball down their throat and Sweetwater can not stop it might possibly be a reason Swater reacted in an inappropiate manner. Much like spoiled kids.

I agree. I felt it was close too. I thought the game was going to be a heavy weight fight all night. And it was for awhile. Then it seemed like it just got a little out of control for you guys. It was a game though that if a couple of things had gone another way the game could have been completely different. And those are two things that happened that were the turning point in the game. They started the game like that. They were platooning #4(SR) and
#6(JR). That's the first time they've done that all year.

I was at the game, as every game.

There was alot more going on in this game than what has been posted!

Trash talk is part of the game! Like it or not!

Two players laying on someone throwing punches, last I looked was not part of the game.

We played terrible for 2 and a half quarters. I am sure that will earn us no love in the "polls" LOL.

Smack should be talked with the helmet only not the lips. Anyway, always nice to put faces with names.

It was great to meet all the LH folks and see the Brownwood ones again!!!

I was diappointed in our loss in the score and of a couple of attitudws on the field. The vast majority of the Swwetwater team as well has fans and family feel the same way.

I really don't care to carry on anymore about it......Thanks to the Mustangs for what MANY thought would be a 10 game season....not a 10 Win season! It has been a blast running the sidelines again.......I think I'll do it again next year!!

Best of luck to Liberty Hill....your team showed why they have won 37 in a row and a couple of state championships!

first half was a pretty exciting game. that opening kickoff was pretty tricky.

playing with emotion can be a great thing, you just cant let your emotions get the best of you and unfortunately that happened tonight for a few of the kids. i was glad the refs just let the clock run down, ive seen it get ugly in the victory formation.

That 1st half was some damn good football I thought! Both sides were fighting tooth & nail. The Stangs were hangin durn well with 'em. I do think going in at half at 10-7 instead of 17-7 would have been much better on Sweetwater's psyche. Not saying it would have changed the outcome, but that 7 Liberty Hill put on the board before half was a killer....IMO.
Liberty Hill was good way back when we played 'em but last night I saw a team that's even better now  , and they were up against a durn good defense.
Congrats to the "RED" on a great season. Way to represent!
Congrats to the Panthers.....will be rootin for yawl all the way to #3!

Liberty Hill ousts Mustangs
By Evan Ren (Contact)
Sunday, November 30, 2008

BROWNWOOD -- For most of the first half on Saturday, the Sweetwater Mustangs played last year's 3A Division I state champions on equal terms.

Then it happened.

With Liberty Hill leading 10-7 with just 34 seconds left before the break, Dusty Boyd broke through the Sweetwater defense for a 94-yard touchdown run, setting off a string of Panther scores in a 38-7 win at Gordon Wood Stadium.

Boyd rushed for 228 yards and two scores to lead Liberty Hill (13-0), which advances to face Bridgeport on Saturday in a 3A Division II Region I final at Baylor's Floyd Casey Stadum.

Sweetwater, which was limited to just 173 yards in total offense, ended its season at 10-3.

The win was the 37th straight for Liberty Hill, which accumulated 317 of its 379 yards on the ground.

"That's definitely the key play of the game," Sweetwater coach Kent Jackson said in reference to Boyd's score before the half. "That's what set off the avalanche."

What ensued was a second half completely dominated by Liberty Hill, beginning with a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Ryan Fickel with 3:16 left in the third quarter to put Sweetwater on the ropes.

One possession later, the Panthers put the game away when Braden Fickel found Joshua Woodbury with a 19-yard touchdown pass for a 31-7 lead with 9:23 to play.

The Panthers scored on a third consecutive possession when Boyd found the end zone from 47 yards out with 6:34 left to play, giving Liberty Hill a 38-7 lead.

"Every time we thought we had them stopped, they came up with the play they needed," Jackson said. "They're the defending state champions for a reason. They did what championship teams do.

"I'm just proud of our kids for the season they had and getting as far as they did."

Liberty Hill finished with 190 yards rushing in the first half, 130 of which came from Boyd.

The Panthers opened the scoring with 8:34 left in the first quarter when Spencer Stratton connected with a 33-yard field goal, ending a 50-yard, seven-play possession.

Following an ill-fated fourth down attempt by Liberty Hill one possession later, Sweetwater drove 49 yards in five plays for it's only score -- a 13-yard touchdown run by Zach Birdwell with 0:33 left in the first quarter.

The Panthers countered on the ensuing drive with a 40-yard run by Matt McCain to the Sweetwater 3. Three plays later, Cody Lattimore gave Liberty Hill the lead for good with a 2-yard scoring run.

The Mustangs had an opportunity to tie the game with 4:35 left in the half, after driving 31 yards to the Panther 21. But Cameron Studdard hooked a 38-yard field goal, leaving the Panthers out front.

Four minutes later, Boyd's first touchdown run provided a decisive boost in momentum.

"I really think that was the backbreaker," said Liberty Hill coach Jerry Vance of Boyd's first score. "That changed everything."

NOTES: There were no penalties in the first half. Sweetwater was held to just 86 yards in total offense before the break. Daniel Jackson led the Mustangs with just 43 yards rushing. In the second half, Sweetwater didn't penetrate the Liberty Hill 30-yard line until its final drive.

To all:
As you should know already, K-MAC Sports values its relationship with 3ADL and appreciates ALL the support we get from the members of 3ADL.

Last night, we encountered a technical problem in the third quarter of the LH/Sweetwater game. Kevin McAdams and Ty Dean worked diligently to correct the problem at the stadium, which turned out to be the phone line we were using. It was a technical snafu; it wasn't anyone's fault, it's just "one of those things" that happens. As some of you techie-types say, it was a "gremlin in the system."

We're sorry that you lost the link but appreciate the fact that a lot of folks stayed with us until we got the live feed back up. Again, we appreciate our relationship with the members of 3ADL, and please know that we always put forth our best efforts. Sometimes, things get taken out of our hands. We understand your frustration - imagine ours as we tried to get the signal back up!

Thanks again for your patience last night. Obviously, a lot of folks wanted to hear the action from the third quarter, because as (at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday) we've already had 419 hits on the replay!

Enjoy, and have a great Sunday.

OK, I've tried my best not to get involved but I can't help myself. This game got chippy because of 1 kid. I won't post his number but if you were at the game, regardless of which side you sat on, you know who I'm talking about. Everytime the one kid carried the ball, whether he gained 5 yards or lost 5, he managed to walk thru the LH defensive huddle and continually talked trash. Everytime there was a change of possession he stood in the middle of the LH team and jawed. That is the reason that things got ugly. And he did this for 4 quarters. My 2 cents.

You are absolutely correct. And we can add to the fact that it wasn't the one that got removed from the game.
Jawing on the field is going to happen, I see no problem with it. It should be contained though. When everyone in the stands can see it going on, then it is overboard. That one individual made a great team look bad IMO.

Thoughts (and mom stuff)

~If you don't like the broadcast crew, either listen to another game or get your butt there in person.

~It's a shame that certain things, factual or not, diminished ON HERE the efforts given by the Mustangs & the Panthers. It was truly a battle of two very good teams.

My homer mom pick on the R1 page was 34-17 score. My weekly pm exchange with a friend on score predictions changed it to 35-14. I was told that there was no way that with the two ball-control offenses, we would have time to score 35 & that our defense might not give up 14. My reasons for 35 were 2 long outside breakaway TD runs by # 22, Boyd, and a long TD pass to # 9, Woodbury, then agreed on the defense.  :D

Again, many kudos to the Mustangs for leaving it all on the field!

Now I'm over & out on this thread because I have pictures to look for.

Congratulations LH on another win. Hats off to Sweetwater for making it this far. Many other teams wish they had that one more week to play.

As for bands playing and crowds yelling. It's part of the game isn't it? At what score should the band stop and crowd get quiet? Is there a respectable stopping point? The goal of football is to get as many points as possible and most towns wish they had a band that would keep playing all game. It's not always easy to be on the losing side of a big game and hearing the band and fans of a successful, winning program but it's all part of the game. It's not a congeniality contest.

I thought the fans were great myself! I didn't see their continual cheering on of their boys as "taunting!"

Thanks to the LH fans for keeping my granddaughter entertained!! I haven't taken her to many games this year because I have a hard time keeping her under control....(due to circumstances beyond my control, and thanks to the offer of my daughter to bring her with us, I ended up with her all weekend) your fans were so animated that she clapped and yelled the entire game too!!! Oh yeah..she got a football too!

I agree! IMO, usually when fans complain about the other side being loud or their band playing, it is because their own fans might be slacking a little. I wasn't there, so I don't know....JMO.
At the Wylie/China Spring game, I for one was excited to hear the other side be so loud and enthusiastic. It certainly makes the atmosphere more exciting and intense for the fans, as I am sure it does for the players. I think this has already been mentioned, but because CS did bring such a great group of fans, I was really surprised to see some of them exiting the stands with more than 2 minutes left in the game. Of course, it is easy for me to say that I would not have done the same because we were ahead at the time. It just seemed a little sad to me...especially considering that if CS had recovered the onside kick, they could have had a lot of celebrating to do. Not to mention that they had already had an incredible season and much to be proud of.

Sorry...got a little off track....:hijacktd:
Congrats Mustangs on a great season and good luck to the Panthers!
