what happened to the wos mustangs. all we heard all week was the broncs were going to create havoc with the bucks. gilmer's defense couldn't keep up with the offensive weapons of wos etc.,

11-29-2008, 09:40 PM
You had a great offense facing a great defense. Something had to give. Gilmer won that battle, and the game. WO-S made nice defensive adjustments in the second half, but it was too big a deficit to make up. If WO-S would not have dropped so many passes (esp. in the first half), the game would have been closer, but that takes nothing away from Gilmer. They were the better team today.

This WO-S fans hopes Gilmer wins it all, as it would be good to say we lost to the state champs. Nice win, Buckeyes.

Gilmer played a very good game. I was very happy with the play calling, as we left no stone unturned. The interception by the D early in the 4th quarter was huge, and with the 35-23 lead pretty much sealed it for us. Jeremy Jackson suited up but did not play, he wa sour leading rusher. Not having him prevented us from trying to run the ball much, not that you would have wanted to have ran against that extremely fast WOS defense. WOS was very impressive on D and the offense was very good but missed some oppurtunities. Turnovers late in the game by WOS sealed their fate, along with the big pass play by gilmer for the TD.

Next week vs. Carthage should be a barn burner.

Gilmer was the better team tonight, but WO-S could have pulled it off if we could have caught the ball on offense (QB put it on the money many times that ended in drops) and covered at one particular corner. It still would have been close, but, with more than five minutes left, WO-S's coaches didn't stop the clock. That told me they were practically giving up, which I have NEVER seen before. Play was too sloppy, hands were like feet and DBs were not looking for the ball - even when on a man like a bum on a baloney sandwich.

None of which are excuses for losing. Gilmer deserved to win tonight, WO-S did not. They were the more complete team tonight by far. Congrats, and good luck.

If I could give a game ball to anybody, it would be our offensive line tonight. In the first half, I remember only once WOS's defense even getting a sniff at Stump behind the line. In the 2nd half, the line was able to maintain composure in the face of an increasingly aggressive WOS pass rush.

The refs were absolutely ridiculous all night! Missed holding calls on both sides of the ball, one fumble for each team ruled down by contact, and a blatant offensive pass interference non-call when our receiver shoved the WOS CB to the ground as he was about to intercept one of Stump's passes. And lest I forget the magic facemask penalty against WOS which was waived and then subsequently stepped off against Gilmer. I was disappointed wholeheartedly with the officiating in a game of this calibur.

All that being said, I'll happily eat my crow! I didn't see the offensive consistency with this team that we have seen in years past. And believing everything I had heard, I couldn't see us prevailing in this one. I knew it would take a great game on our part, and that's what we got. Great job Buckeyes!

PS: You've been calling for us for a few weeks now! Here we come Carthage!!

I did, however, enjoy the fact that the replays on the big screen looked like 1980s era NFL films clips in slo mo. I was even chanting da-da dat-a da-da-da-da dat-da. Gilmer's QB was very impressive. Our corner play has been reasonably weak all season. Congrats on being the first (in our 11th game) to expose it, key on the weakness, and win. Sadly, I told my wife on the drive up that if they managed to find our weakness in the secondary and were willing to expose it continually, we were done for. A stellar, hall-of-fame-worthy defensive season yet again ends with a question mark for the Stangs... just like Wimberley, just like Ennis.

This was a very enjoyable game, at least for someone who had no side to choose. Both teams ran a no huddle offense and took plays from the sideline. Overall the penalties were fair and accurate. You'd think the game would be fast with no huddle, but the passing incompletions slowed it down to a normal 3 hour game.

Looked like Gilmer's defense ran a 3-4 most of the first half, stacking only on obvious running plays. WOS was a 4-3, but couldn't keep Gilmer's QB on the run enough to avoid the great passing attack. Not much blitzing.

WOS started with a good running attack, but as soon as they fell behind, they started trying to throw for the fences. Their QB is very accurate at 10-20 yards, not on the long ones. Gilmer let a few get by, but WOS's inability to complete the long ones hurt them and they never went back to the run consistently.

I gotta tell you, Gilmer has a secret weapon in that little round guard, #70. I confused him for the football several times! j/k. All in all, a good game to watch with lots of action and for once, two 3A teams that pass.

This was such an odd game in that the outcome could have very easily swung any number of ways. If the WOS receivers could've caught a cold in the first half, WOS probably could've won this game. If the WOS punt bounces backwards instead of rolling 45 yards to our 1yd line, we probably score again before the half. If Tristan Holt doesn't fumble on the first play of the 2nd half, we probably score and go up 35-9 and are headed for a blowout! If the corner and safety don't take the same man on the 5th touchdown leaving our receiver wide open, WOS probably holds on defense and maintains all that momentum they had built.
Congratulations to the Mustangs on another stellar year. These games should not take place in the 3rd round. I have no doubt that if Gilmer was still in Reg II, a Gilmer/WOS state final was a real possibility. Best of luck to the Stangs for the rest of the year, and I hope everyone made it home safely.

Nothing but class by these two teams.

I will agree, I think there were 2 VERY bad calls in this one, but that's it.

#1..... the no call that should have been pass interference against the Buckeyes about 40 yds downfield. He PUSHED the receiver to the ground. i don;t know how that doesn't get called.

#2,. The so called face mask. thye showed it twice on replay. I thought it was a FM at first, but when the replay showed it, he just pulled the guy down by the back of the helmet. No mask involved. Crucial first down that gave the mustangs.
