What Specifically are the Massey ratings?

is it just numbers? How do they determine rankings?

I think strength of schedule is part of the equation, but I dont know what all else besides pure numbers are in it.

Everything in his ratings are based off scores, and strength of schedule is indeed factored into his ranking calculation. When we played Ingram and Canyon Lake, our SOS plummeted, and we fell in the ratings. The same thing happened in WOS87's power ratings. These are good to get a guage of the two teams, but they have limitations. Even though the BCS is crap, combining computer rankings with human rankings is the best solution. Sometimes polls need bias and a little reasoning put into them.

In someone's free time (WOS87), they should come up with a system that computes the weighted average of the Massey, Harris, Padilla, Jerry's, and WOS87's ratings and combines them with the various human polls. That would be interesting to see.

This rating, IMO, becomes very telling this late in the year. Looking at LH's ratings, it tells a story of the '08 Panthers that I think is accurate. Yes, the easy teams near the end of the season dropped them in the ratings, but it is offest by the VERY strong early schedule.

I think I see accuracy in the fact that LH is not in the top 5 in offense, and they are not in the top 5 in defense. HOWEVER, they ARE in the top 5 when taken all together. And isnt this really what the story of LH has been this year? They are winning as a TEAM....not an overly dominating offense of yester-year (though the stats are close), and not the dominating defense of last year and late in '06. But somehow...someway...they rally and get it done. T-E-A-M. I think this rating is very accurate.
