WACO - The final two quarters of Jonathon Miller's high school football career symbolized Friday's frustration for Garland Naaman Forest.

Miller, an Oklahoma recruit, was limited to 11 yards on just four carries in the second half of Naaman Forest's 16-9 loss to Copperas Cove in a Class 5A Division II Region II area playoff at Waco ISD Stadium.

"Copperas Cove's defense is a lot faster than they looked on film," Miller said. "They're probably the fastest defense we played. They put a lot of pressure on us, blitzing us and forcing us to make decisions."

Miller had just one touch, a rush of three yards, in the fourth quarter and was held under 100 yards for the first time this season.

The only Naaman Forest touchdown was provided by its defense. DJ Hendrix picked up a fourth-and-1 fumble by Copperas Cove quarterback Nic Greene and returned it 80 yards to close the gap to 16-9 with 3:22 remaining. The extra-point attempt was blocked.

Naaman Forest got the ball back at its 19 with 1:38 remaining and no timeouts.

After moving 28 yards in only 18 seconds on short sideline passes, quarterback Derrick Osborn was sacked for the sixth time. Osborn's fourth-down keep was stopped five yards shy of a first down, clinching the win for Copperas Cove (11-1).

Naaman Forest (9-3) equaled the school's best record, matching last year's team that also was eliminated in the area round.

Up 7-3 at half, Copperas Cove made it 14-3 on backup running back William Wright's 30-yard touchdown sweep of right end. It capped a drive of 81 yards in five plays, all runs.

Michael Roell punted Naaman Forest to its 1, setting up a safety when Osborn's fumble in the end zone was recovered by a teammate.

All Naaman Forest got out of 229 yards of first-half offense was a 23-yard field goal by Michael Bychkowski. Miller broke a 61-yard rundown the right sideline to set up the score.

Naaman Forest first-half drives of 60, 50 and 43 yards yielded no points.

"Any of those drives were the turning point," said Naaman Forest coach Bill Patterson. "Our defense played great, we just didn't get the job done when he had chances to score."

Copperas Cove responded after the field goal with its only drive of the half, going 74 yards in 11 plays.

Copperas Cove, a Class 4A Division I finalist last season, advances to meet today's Lufkin-Houston Cyprus Ridge winner.
