I always call it area... regional to me means you're playing to get out of the region... makes sense to me...

and this is Bandera's bi-area round game...

There's 4 teams in Div.1 per region that are playing. That makes it regional semi-final, right?

I always thought it was silly, too. To me the final game in the region should be the regional game, but the UIL wants to call that one the quarterfinals.

On third and goal they tried the option lost 11 yards. With no timeouts, they tried to hurry the kicker onto the field, then took him off and decided to run a quick play with the clock running down. Hubble fired an incomplete pass on fourth down. Great D by the Lions on that series. HALFTIME.

JUST GOT IN... Wow looks like there is a real good game going on. Plus remember what I said earlier this Lion team is a young one who has been playing better every week. And again it's all about match-ups

Well see if they can keep their intensity till the 4th, like they did against my Tarpons.

Now do you believe that 32-3a was a tough district this year. ... and yeah PI didn't even make the playoffs since '99. :(

La Feria has a good defense and defense keeps you in games. La Feria does have problems offensively as it showed against a average Robstown defense. But i still picked Bandera as i didnt want to be the only one to admit La Feria could win this game:)

Huge upset! Sounds like the week off hurt Bandera's game. Sounds like a lot of turnovers and penalties. Can't do that against Valley schools, they play with heart and feed off that kinda stuff; you gotta kill them quick or be ready for a dogfight. That's not a slight against La Feria, who obviously came to play.

That's actually been a problem for them, especially early in the year. 49 to La Vernia 50 something to Llano, 40 something to Santa Rosa, 27 to Pearsall, 33 to Devine. Teams were able to score on them they were just able to outscore everyone most of the time. La Feria D seems to be the real deal as well.

Just got home from the game....what a disaster for Bandera. Congrats to La Feria on a well played game. They fought hard and deserved to win. Not making excuses, but everything that could go wrong for Bandera did. Dropped passes, fumbles, penalties, dropped interceptions...the list is huge. In my opinion the bye week and all the talk of Bandera " running over" La Feria bit us in the a**. Good luck to La Feria vs the Cuero/Sealy winner next week.

Just got back to college station from the game...
I was shocked. Congratulations to La Feria, they took advantage of everything we gave them. Our offense just seemed...off. Whether it be from the bye, or La Feria throwing us off, I dont know.
The other thing I noticed was that Hubble never was rushed hard. It wasnt like he had no time. They just played good pass defense...for the most part. Even when they didnt we couldnt take advantage of it.
All in all, I am very surprised, and I feel bad for our boys. Not the way you want to end a season, not on top of your game. If you lose and played well its a different story, but to lose and not have played your best...its not so fun.

Good luck to La Feria...

Oh and for the speed. We still ran fast. Just didnt do anything while running fast.

I am curious to know what type of offense La Feria runs, they go from 3 points to 31 in one week. What did they do that was so difficult to stop, I would think of a valley team as trying to run the ball, sweep left right, counter and bootleg if they throw. I am shocked at the outcome here but someone said it perfectly in the posts on page 10 or 11. The Valley teams feed off of mistakes, anytime you let them hang around and give them a break they will take advantage. I don't know anything about La Feria and was hoping some of yall could inform us about what they do so good and just how the game went.

Good luck La Feria, nothing like being the underdog and then shocking the state, or at least Region IV in my opinion.

Why did La Feria travel all the way to San Antonio? Did they flip for home? I wonder why they would do that on a Thursday night at that? Bandera had to have an advantage by being so close to home. I would have thought they would have played this game on Friday in Kingsville or Corpus, Just wondering if any of yall new the reason why.

That really sucks. :( The boys had a great season, but I agree with the above statement.

This will be a building experience for your underclassmen, but for your seniors it has to sting.

Well, I think Coach Esquivel answers right here, it was where they wanted to play and as for playing on Thursday that's the only day that was available, plus it's less expensive, even more so then @TAMUK and CC stadiums.

The La Feria Lions go through preparations earlier this week at Lion Stadium. La Feria will square off with Bandera in Class 3A Division I regional quarterfinal game at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Lions ready for tough Bandera team in regional quarters tonight

By ARMANDO GARZA
RGVSports.com 956-430-6255

SAN ANTONIO — The La Feria Lions aren’t scared.
And they’re not nervous, either.
Heading into their Class 3A Division I regional quarterfinal against Bandera tonight at the Alamodome, the Lions are focused on springing what most would call an upset over the Bulldogs.
“We’re relaxed. We preach having fun to our kids,” La Feria head coach Elifonso Esquivel said. “But we’re gonna show up ready to play and ready to win the ballgame.”
For a team that was 1-4 at the midway point of the season, the Lions have certainly turned things around.
La Feria’s offense began to click.
Raul Bowman (1,430 yards, 13 TDs) and Colie Long (567, 5 TDs)
confidence running the offense. Wideouts Aaron Villalon (34-710 yards) and Julio Martinez (32-496) stepped up as reliable targets during the regular season.
Then the defense started to mature and improve.
Linebacker Stephen White stepped up his game and those around him began to as well.
As result, the wins began to pile up as the Lions finished the year at 5-5.
“We told the kids about 5-6 weeks ago if we worked hard, we’d be playing at the Alamodome,” Esquivel said. “They worked hard and had a lot of dedication and now we’re Bi-district champs.”
Then last week, the Lions were in a defensive battle with the Robstown Cotton Pickers.
That bi-district contest was at a 0-0-deadlock heading into the final quarter.
Kicker Brian Vasquez nailed a field goal to give the Lions a lead they never relinquished in a 3-0 win.
Michael Fonseca and Bowman each had interceptions to end Picker drives and preserve the win.
That win is along the lines of the recipe they’ll have to follow to beat Bandera (7-3).
After a 0-3 start, the Bulldogs come in winners of seven straight games before their bye last week.
Bandera averaged an impressive 42 points and 437 yards offensively (262 of those rushing) per game.
Quarterback Cole Hubble is tops in the San Antonio area with 3,459 yards (1,960 passing, 30 TDs; 1,499 rushing 16 TDs) of total offense. He is a heavy D-I recruit.
The Bulldogs’ top wideout is Cole Hicks (44-854, 15 TDs).
“They’re one of the better teams we’ve faced,” Esquivel said of Bandera. “But we feel they haven’t faced an offense or defense like ours.”
And while ratings systems and prognosticators are picking against the Lions, that doesn’t bother Esquivel and his squad. It serves at motivation.

They run a lot of gun right. Their lineman get 5 feet splits and just run 4 and 5 zone. And when the Bandera DL fought across the face, they cut it in the huge hole. They also capitalized on every opportunity. Every drive Bandera didnt score on, they dropped a fade where they were wide open. Mistakes killed them

Congrats to La Feria. They were the better team that night. They executed, we didnt.

La Feria running back Randy Rodriguez
dives over the goal line in front of Bandera's

Berth in quarterfinals helps La Feria forget slow start
By Raul Dominguez Jr. - Express-News

La Feria coach Elifonso Esquivel Jr. should follow through with plans to update his résumé, but not for the reasons he wanted to do so earlier in the season.

After starting the season 1-4, La Feria (6-6) is advancing to the Region IV-3A Division I quarterfinals following a dominant 31-14 victory over Bandera. The Lions outscored the Bulldogs 17-0 in the second half before 2,500 Thursday night at the Alamodome for the upset.

La Feria will face the winner of today's game between Cuero and Sealy. The Lions will be regarded as underdogs against either team, but they're used to that role.

“We've been underdogs from the very beginning,” Esquivel said. “I told our kids, “‘Let's have fun. We have nothing to lose, let's let it all hang out.'”

La Feria played with great confidence Thursday, matching Bandera offensively in the first half and sealing the win with three second-half interceptions.

It was a bit unexpected given how poorly the Lions started the season.

“When we were 1-4 I thought, shoot, I should get my résumé ready,” Esquivel said. “(But) the kids regrouped and the community always stuck behind us.”

La Feria rewarded the faith by piling up 390 total yards in a well-balanced attack that left Bandera reeling.

“They executed tonight, and we didn't,” Bulldogs coach Larry Prince said.

“I watched them last week, and they just looked a little out of sync. I knew if they ever got to where they were throwing and catching the ball well, it would be trouble for us, and they did tonight. They found the holes in the zone.”

The quarterback tandem of Colie Long and Raul Bowman Jr. combined to complete 8 of 17 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 50 yards on 12 carries.

After Bandera scored two plays into the game on a 57-yard pass from Cole Hubble to Cisco Ruiz, La Feria responded three minutes later with a 41-yard TD from Long to Julio Martinez.

It was the start of a strong effort offensively that the Bulldogs (7-4) couldn't contain.

When the Lions' quarterbacks weren't zipping the ball to open receivers, Randy Rodriguez was spinning past defenders on his way to 140 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 19 carries.

“Incredble, incredible,” Rodriguez said of the victory. “To come in here with such young guys and to get a win is incredible.”
