Aren't Monahans and Wimberley usually ruling the roost in 3A volleyball? Where they is?

I heard that several of the Lovejoy girls play club together coached by their coaches wife. Not sure if thats true or even within the rules but they are sure a talented team.

Yeah...we usually are...until we ran into a better team in BW. We were down a bit in talent this year as well, but were good enough (in my view) to get to state, based on the last few years of talent that I saw in the state tourney. Obviously, I was mistaken.

Back to the thread topic....

The State tourney will be interesting as Bellville and Caldwell are are the only two that had a head to head match this year, someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Brownwood, after taking down powerhouse Wimberley, comes in as a new entity in 3A, at least in recent years and has opened a lot of eyes. Lovejoy the favored team almost all year albeit a younger very talented group has got to come in as the favorite.

After Bellville's match with Columbus in the Region 4 finals does Bellville feel the magic of so many past years? Does Brownwood come in and continue their run as an overlooked entity? Does Caldwell pull off an upset over Lovejoy?

Answers to these questions and more can only be answered next weekend and no matter what, will be fun to watch!

Congratulations to all four finalists, good luck and stay injury free!!!

Brownwood has no club volleyball and to my knowledge (which is very very limited in this sport) none of them play club ball in other towns. I will have to check this out to find out for sure.

As far as multisport I believe only 2 of our girls only play volleyball. I count 1 that play four sports ( volleyball, soccer, softball and basketball) , 8 that play a combination of 3 sports. and 2 that play two of the sports. This does not include track. That is the one sporting event I seldom ever go to. These numbers are by no means official, only working from my feeble memory.

Bellville's amazing comeback against Columbus should give them the extra edge over the 3 other teams. Knowing that they can overcome being down 2-0 and trailing 23-20, this team feels they are never out of a game. Nice to have this type of confidence in your hip pocket. Another edge would be their great coach, probably one of the best in the country. Her ability to consistently put a winning team on the court is unbelievable. Bellville bascially dominated the 1990s under head coach Susan Brewer, whose Brahamanettes played in every Class 3A final from 1990-97 - winning six of those eight championship matches.

Legal within the rules is all that matters. They have 6 Juniors 3 Sophmores and a Freshman. No Seniors. It is totally possible that this team and no other girls play year round as a club team as the younger girls can "play up" as 17's last club season. With the coaches wife as the coach they can basically practice his scheme together year round. This is only possible because the team is mostly Juniors and it is geographically close to club volleyball. My daughter has played club and must drive 40 minutes minimum to get to practice from out here in the sticks (and we are closer than most on this board).

If they are this good now, just wait till next year when they are mostly Seniors. Whn do they go 4A?

Yes, Caldwell did play a lot of 4A and 5A teams and deserves great recognition in reaching the final 4. They were 3-6 against 5A competiton and 8-3 against 4A. Early before district play began, Caldwell visited Bellville and lost in 3, a lot can change after going thru the rigors of the playoffs.

Best of luck to the Lady Hornets!

Good piece! Bellville's team is business like. That more than anything else really impressed me. They are very fundamentally sound, play great defense and can flat out swing. Most of it is talent, but getting it all to gel and work is COACHING! Very lucky to have the same coach for 32 years!! The girls know what is expected of them, year in & year out! Great program.

Reminds me of a baseball program down south. ;)

Bellville's Coach Brewer brings the most high school experience into this tournament. If it comes down to coaching it favors Bellville but the coach cannot play for 'em! The girls will have to get it done.

Coach Steed of Brownwood is a very experienced coach. She played in the Olympics in volleyball and her husband was coach for the national team for quite some time. They have a great deal of experience and work the girls very hard.

I think it came down to coaching to get all 4 teams this far and now it comes down to who does everything right... coaches and players.

Good Luck Brownwood Lady Lions!!!

I started looking and it was probally the 72 or 76 olympics. Her husband does not coach but I am sure his advise is respected.

That is your right to doubt. I dont really care. I was told by many that she did. Her husband is the one that told me he coached her in the nationals. She has never ever said a word about it to me but I only talk to her during softball season as she is one of the assistant coaches for that sport.

They are very classy people and I belive if that was not the thruth she would have squashed it.

As I posted last week on the bwd/ wimberly volleyball thread, I dont know that her olympic experience gives us any advantage in the high school game. I only posted this on this thread because YOU asked about coaches.

Also a little curious if you could tell me what the coaches name is your were looking for since you did not find it. Her name has not been mentioned on this thread and even if you looked it up on the UIL web site, neither of us have any idea what her name was before she married. I think you are just blowing smoke and trying to :stirpot:

Lovejoy will win it all.
They have amazing hitters and losses only to 4A and 5A schools.
Sophomore Natalie Puckett-LOOKOUT!!! Probably the best OH in 3A.
Freshman Andie Malloy- punishing serve and blocking abilities.
They are extremely good and well balanced.
Lord Help whoever they play in the finals.

I agree, sounds pretty biased to me.We where at the game and like any game,(if you have ever followed sports) there are questionable calls this game was one of the games, regardless BROWNWOOD was the better team and the outcome would have been the same on any given day,It's just a shame that some folks try and take that from a team that should by now have earned the respect of many people instead of these people trying to find an excuse for thier teams loss.enough said.

I was at the game and both teams were very good (as were both Love Joy and Caldwell) I did think Brownwood was the better team but as always, I am a homer. It amazes me how those girls get in front of the Rockets that come from the hitters! Volleyball is not a sport for wimps!!!

To me, the best player I say today was #15 for Caldwell, she never quit on any play. She was all over the place and dove to the ground more times than I could count ... and dug most of them.

Congrats Belville on a great played game. It was lots of fun and Good Luck tomorrow Lady Lions.... beat Love Joy!

I will agree, I was there and the Lions are the better team. Bellville is not a strong blocking team and had no answer for B'wood's outside hitters! Brownwood setter is awesome could put it anywhere from anywhere and the hitters took it from there.

Spoke with some fans from Wimberley that were there and they were also in agreement that the officiating was questionable at best. That is not from homers!

Brownwood vs Lovejoy will be interesting as Lovejoy may be able to block!

For the Brownwood girls, I am very very proud! Nobody expected you to even be in the regionals but you were #2 in the state this year. Last week there were 16 teams left and you were finally ranked .... #16! You did what nobody in the state except you thought you could and that is play in the state championship game.
