View Full Version : Celina: Looking Back.........and Forward

Looking back on a regular season that many consider to be a disappointment and shocking that we would lose 3 games. I have a different view. If you look at our schedule, I would say it was one of the toughest we have played, certainly in the 5 years I have been here. Even our 2 preseason scrimmages (Lovejoy and Bridgeport) are now playoff teams. In non-district, TCA is a playoff team with their only loss coming to Celina; Daingerfield is a 9-1 playoff team with their only loss coming to Gilmer;FW Arlington Heights and Whitehouse are both 4A playoff teams;and of course, Prosper and Argyle from our district are both in the playoffs. So, 6 of our 10 regular season games were against teams that are now in the playoffs. Granted that one was TAPPS and one was 2A, but two of them were 4A. I'm curious how that compares with other 3A playoff teams?

(Sidenote: saw this posted on TCA's website:"13 starters return for the Trojans, led by dual threat QB Johnny Catalano, LB Phyre Burns and DB Josh Fellows--all D-I prospects who will play both ways. Eight other players are projected to play at D-II colleges and five more at the D-III level." I'd say that's a little optimistic?)

Looking forward to the playoffs, I believe we have a chance to go deep IF we do not turn the ball over. I'm not a stat guy, but if you look at the number of turnovers we have had in our losses versus our wins, I believe that is the story of this team. If we turn it over 2-4 times, we can lose to anyone. If we don't, we can play with most anyone.

I took a glance at WOS's power ratings and remembered the thread before the season started as to the toughest district in the state.

It was all about district 2 and 8, but according to WOS's power ratings, it turned out to be district 9.

LOL. :D

Benny I was thinking the same thing District 9 has turned out to be good. I hope we have the opportunity to play you guys again this year.

Well, I hope the Bobcats get to play your Eagles again too.

I also hope Prosper make a strong showing.

This way we can make all of the other non-district 9 members miserable with our crowing. ;)

P.S. Great job WOS87 !

Hey this reminds me a little of the 05 season. All three teams made great that year too. Of course we were 13 2a then but still
Prosper went deep, Argyle runner up and we got number 7. And here we are together again and looking strong for region 2.

OK BILLY, I think we need to have some stats to back that up!

Come on BILLYFRED! Remind me of the 2006 season. I am starting to get all nostalgic!

I really need some serious BILLYFRED0000 analysis!!!!!!! :nerd:

I suspect that LHPM has been missing it too!

I hope the Bobcats and the Bulls both make it far enough to meet in the playoffs----that would be a good un' and would answer the question of who is the better team instead of trying to figure it out in scrimmages.

That works for me! The winner of that game plays for all of the marbles. I do beleive that Bridgeport will be the first game that is really close if we play to our potential.

As I see it:

Van Alstyne
Madison or Kennedale
Pleasant Grove
Argyle part duex
Bridgeport
Gilmer

Gator, in this scenario, someone beats Liberty Hill, correct? Not that familiar with the brackets and who you think will beat them, but I don't see them losing.

I'll bet LHPM agrees with me on this one.:D

I think that are in the bracket with Bridgeport. For the above scenario of Celina playing Bridgeport to work out Bridgeport has to beat LH, else we play LH which has its own appeal (or lack of)

Just looking at the Region II brackets, both D1 and D2. The only two teams in the top 25 are #11 Prosper and #18 Celina. Didn't see another team in the whole region in the top 25, so the whole region is not very strong. I only bring this up so you won't start patting yourself and district on the back if you have a good playoff run within your own region because the whole region is not very strong.

Region 1 D2 ain't all that strong either. LH is on a streak, so no arguments there - and we have yet to see B'port play anyone, so no real idea there, but none of the other Region 1 teams are much account, so it appears Region 1 and 2 are about the same, except for the records of the teams involved....

Bridgeport hasn't played anyone? They BEAT Prosper. That's good enough for me.

I didn't have an AP poll handy so I looked at the poll on Texasfootball.com

But this poll still backs up my weak region two assessment. Only 2 region II teams and 7 region I teams (almost 1/2)out of 16 teams in this poll. It also makes a statement towards everyone claiming that district 2 and 8 are the toughest, and that Brownwood could have competed in district 9. BW played three of the 16 in this poll along with Waco LV and Stephenville and could have won any and all of these games. They won't show up on any poll but I assure you that you wouldn't want to play them this weekend on a neutral field. :D

Actually it has argyle at 18 and celina will move up to about 12 with prosper staying at the same. That means that district 9 3a has three top 20 teams and that could cloud the water a little as to how good they all actually are. Right now I would make Celina a top 10 and argyle a top 15 and leave Prosper in the top 5. So while region two is a little weak it still has two teams with good playoff reputations in Argyle and Celina and Prosper is looking strong this year. I think d2 district 9 will win the region and Prosper probably will too. Now will we beat 1 in the semi's maybe if we continue to improve and do not get hurt. Celina is playing closer to 100 percent now than we have since two a days when Charlie got hurt. In fact the main reason I am playing us up a little is Charlie looks like 100 percent for the first time all season and the O line had an excellent game getting everybody back healthy since very early in the season.

Hears the light at the end of the tunnel.:D

D1 - whoever wins reg. 2 will likely have to play either Ab. Wylie, China Spring, or Burkburnett barring some huge upsets.

D2 - Well, Liberty Hill awaits the winner and I'll just leave it at that until someone beats them.

It is high school football and anything can happen, but that's what makes it so much fun.
