There are currently 7 undefeated teams left in 3a. Ever wonder why? Yes they are good teams who come to play consistently each week but I found it interesting to look at the records of their opponents. Through week nine they were as follows:

Team Opp. Record Opp. Winning %
Bridgeport 35-55 39%
WOS 22-38 37%
Navasota 33-42 44%
LH 39-52 43%
Sinton 36-44 45%
Cleveland 22-47 31%
China Spring 32-55 37%

Any Questions?

Liberty Hill opponents are actually 43-57, and that figure is highly skewed by Ingram and Canyon Lake's combined 1-19 record (games we would have rather not had on our schedule). Factor them out and our opponents record is 42-38, with eight of those losses coming to us.

You also have to consider that every district is going to wind up with a .500 record. Since we're in a 7 team district, there were 21 games resulting in a district record of 21-21. When you factor out our 6-0 record to get the total district record of our district opponents, you get 15-21, so that accounts for six games under .500 right there.

The best possible opponents' record for an undefeated team in a six-team district is 80-20. That's what you would get with all five non-district opponents going 9-1, all five district opponents going 5-0 in pre-district, then adding in the district opponent district record of 10-15. For a seven-team district, the best possible opponent record for an undefeated team is 75-25.

There's some merit to your theory of combined component records, but most undefeated teams are generally undefeated because they are also pretty good. That's not to say they're better than all the one, two, or even three loss teams in the state, though, and that's why we have a playoff system and not the high school version of the BCS.

I agree about the one, two or three loss teams, in district, theory. According to Massey SOS, Wharton had a 70 SOS, the number one spot, in the state at one time. The last time I checked it, they had slipped to the #2 or #3 spot.

I'd be more impressed with an undefeated team if their SOS was also in the very top in the state, although being undefeated is still an impressive feat. I'm not taking any at all away from that! I'm glad we have the playoff system we have here in Texas.

IMO, for the most part, strength of schedule, looks much better (or worse) for all teams before the season starts, compared to as the regular season ends. In 2006, pre-season, our SOS was at the top, or close to it. After winning state, our 2007 pre-season SOS was lowered, but all our opponents SOS had been raised considerably, even though our schedule was exactly the same. Other than Manor, our 2008 pre-season schedule was loaded and considered "strong". Once Brownwood fell off the map, it was lowered by their losses. You can only beat who's on the field at the time. What happens to THEIR season before and after is up to them.

Beng undefeated in the regular season means nothing if you can't hold up in the playoffs! An don't get me wrong it is a great feat to go undefeated in the regular season but it can't also be watered down base on some of the district's and pre- district games that team play! So if you are indeed a good team combined with a little luck it will show over the next month or so!

In my opinion, schedules of opponents and their wins and losses and rankings do not mean a thing! Whichever teams has the best draw in the playoffs factors in to it as well as team overall strength! Best teams will be in the finals regardless.

Just in case anyone was not aware that Tech is undefeated!
