WO-S stampedes past OF, 67-0

WEST ORANGE — Twenty-nine games and counting.

That’s how the third-ranked West Orange-Stark Mustangs finished off their District 21-3A season.

The Mustangs (8-0, 5-0) capped off their fifth straight district title since they dropped to Class 3A in 2004 and extended their district winning streak to 29 games by throttling Orange County rival Orangefield 67-0 in the regular season final on Homecoming night.

How dominant were the Mustangs Friday night?

The WO-S offense rolled up 615 total yards while the “Chain Gang” defense held the Bobcats to 45 yards and no first downs.

“Our kids just had an amazing night,” said long-time Mustang head coach Dan Hooks. “We’ve played outstanding defense here a long, long time and that’s a credit to Coach (Cornel) Thompson. But we’ve never held a team to no first downs. That’s very, very hard to do.”

In five 21-3A games, the Mustangs outscored their opponents 253-14.

The Mustangs outgained the Bobcats 393-32 alone in the first half and held Orangefield (1-7, 0-5) to no first downs as WO-S led 39-0 at intermission.

Mustang senior quarterback Ortavious Hypolite, who was crowned Homecoming King, completed 12-of-15 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown in the first half and rushed for 84 yards and a TD on eight first-half carries. He finished 14-of-18 for 212 yards.

Senior tailback Quintavious Garrett found his way to the end zone four times in the first half and had 126 yards on 13 carries in the half. Garrett finished with 153 yards on 14 totes.

Senior trey Franks led the way with four catches for 56 yards while junior James Haynes had for grabs for 45 yards and two TDs.

“Our offense was rolling early,” said hooks. “Hypolite played so darn strong and Quinney (Garrett) ran better then he has in awhile. Everything was clicking. Coach (Randy) Crouch had everything rolling upstairs tonight and the kids executed well. We got a good look at some young kids late and they played well too.”

The Mustangs will take on the Coldspring Trojans next Saturday at 6 p.m. at Deer Park High School in the Class 3A Region III Division II bidstrict round of the playoffs.

The Mustangs buried the Trojans 51-14 in the same round last season.

“We’re no strangers,” said Hooks. “The score wasn’t as bad as it really seemed last year. They had four turnovers that hurt them a bunch. They have a good club. Hopefully we can create some more turnovers again and let our offense go to work.”

The Mustangs wasted no time getting on the board against the Bobcats, taking their first series and marching to the end zone in four plays and 60 yards.

Hypolite completed two passes that went to Trey Franks for 32 yards. Garrett carried twice for 28 yards including a 9-yard touchdown blast with 11:03 remaining in the first period. Justin Sparrow’s extra-point was good, making it 7-0.

After forcing Bobcat quarterback Jace Statum into a fumble at the Bobcat 34, it took the Mustangs just four plays to hit pay dirt again. Garrett carried twice for 18 yards and Hypolite capped it when he cruised through the middle of the Orangefield defense for a 17-yard keeper for a touchdown, upping the margin to 13-0 with 7:26 in the first.

WO-S put together a five-play, 70-yard scoring march late in the first, 60 of it coming on the ground. Hypolite carried twice for 21 yards and Garrett finished it with a 28-yard TD gallop up the middle as the lead grew to 20-0 with 3:56 in the first.

The Mustangs completed a beautifully executed nine-play, 65-yard scoring drive finishing it with 10:08 left in the first half. Hypolite carried three times for 35 yards on the march and Garrett capped it with a 5-yard run around the left end, giving the Mustangs a 26-0 edge.

After defensive back Carderyl Dove picked off a pass at the Mustang 39, the Mustangs utilized a seven-play, 61-yard scoring drive. Hypolite completed two passes for 29 yards and Garrett had 23 yards on two totes, including a 7-yard TD blast as he had a great stretch to reach the end zone, making it 32-0 with 2:15 remaining in the half.

The Mustangs went 65 yards in four plays to score again right before the half. Hypolite connected with receiver Josh Gloston on a 45-yard strike down the left sideline that went to the Bobcat 11. On the next play Hypolite found receiver James Haynes flashing across the middle of the end zone for a 11-yard scoring toss, making it 39-0 with 0:09 left in the half.

WO-S made it 46-0 with 10:42 left in the third when Mustang Curtis Rose blocked a Bobcat punt and returned it 33 yards for a score.

The Mustangs went 55 yards in two plays to up the advantage to 53-0 with 6:57 in the third. Garrett broke loose for a 27-yard scamper and Hypolite connected with Haynes for another score, this one a 28-yarder off a short pass that allowed Haynes to sprint to the end zone.

WO-S executed a 12-play, 72-yard scoring drive that ate up 5:53 of the clock to make it 60-0. Backup tailback Kevin Robinson carried 10 times for 53 yards on the series and finished it with a 5-yard dive with 10:44 left.

The Mustangs capped their scoring with a six-play, 68-yard march with fullback Stephen Cook finishing that one off with a 16-yard blast up the middle with 5:20 left.

Chase Parker led the Bobcat attack with 20 yards on 17 carries while Zach Peevey had 17 yards on eight totes. Statum completed 1-of-7 passes for a negative 3 yards.

The Mustangs are definitely "open for business". The offensive attack is so well-balanced with receivers, running backs, and Hypolite at QB. The "Chain Gang" swarms to the football on every play. You don't see many one-on-one tackles from them.

I expect them to make a legitimate run for the D2-RIII championship.

C'mon Kerry, you know better, or do you?

You tell'em sinton66, you need to keep this guy in line. You do have to excuse him though. When it comes to WOS, he gets blinded. He needs to toot their horn as much as possible.:D lol jk
