CLASS 3-A: Tyler Sharpe, QB, Van High School

When the 2007 Built Ford Tough 3-A Player of the Year, Jermie Calhoun of Van, departed for the University of Oklahoma last summer, everyone wondered what the Vandals would do next. No problem. Coach Brady Pennington turned the ball over to junior quarterback Tyler Sharpe—and stood back. Van raised its record to 7-1 last week with a 50-21 victory over Willis Point, keyed by another great performance by its young 5-11, 170-pound junior quarterback. Sharpy, as his teammates call him, threw a 20-yard TD pass on his first play of the game and threw for two more (65 and 52 yards, respectively) as the Vandals pulled away in the second half. Overall, he completed 25 of 35 for 327 yards, his school-record second 300+ yard game. He has also broken the single-season mark, crossing the 1600 yard barrier with time to go! Tyler, who plays basketball and runs track for Van is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and volunteers for youth mentoring programs, and carries a 3.0 GPA.

“Tyler is exactly what you’re looking for in a quarterback,” says Coach Pennington. “When Jermie was here, we were known for our Power I formation. Now we run a spread offense 70% of the time to accommodate Tyler’s arm and accuracy. He’s like a breath of fresh air.”

Calhoun was redshirted this year which is probably good for him. He didn't graduate early like some seniors do which means he didn't get an early start at OU. There are already some good backs at OU but he's definately a RB.
