Found this on another board. Thought I would share it with the DownLow.

Here are some facts for the 2002 playoff qualifiers involving enrollment:

25/32 (78%) of the largest schools in the district made the playoffs.
13 were district champions
6 were runners-up
6 finished 3rd

The largest DI qualifier was Elgin (897)
The smallest DI qualifier was Falfurrias (513.5)
31/64 (48%) DII qualifiers have a larger enrollment than Falfurrias

Average Enrollment:
DI - 705
DII - 611

10/32 of the smallest schools in the district qualified for the playoffs.
3 District Champions (Celina, Newton, Rice Cons.)
3 Runner-Ups
4 3rd place finishers

The largest DII qualifier was Canyon (874.5). There are only 5 schools larger in DI.

The smallest DII qualifier was Celina (347).

I got these enrollment figures from DCTF. Let's give it a +/- 2% margin of error.

So...the largest school in the district was 2.5 times more likely to qualify for the playoffs than the smallest school...And they say that numbers don't matter :D

Ozzy, interesting info you brought to our attention. Personally, It's just another nail in the coffin of the 2 division system. Trouble is the UIL doesn't pay attention to nails or coffins!Do you suppose I should just get over it and hush?

If Celina's numbers are accurate, how in the world are they competing. My goodness, my respect for them has just went up more. No matter what they do this playoff season they will still be impressive to me. Go Celina!!!

Good info. Also note that smaller will wear down more quickly during the playoff. They do not have as many backup.

The Celina number is accurate. They are the smallest 3A school. They've sure impressed me!

A smaller enrollment number does not necessarilly mean that they have fewer people on their team. It simply means that they have fewer players to pick from. Celina has more players suiting out on a Friday night than a lot of other schools in 3A that are bigger, which is all of them!!!

That's what is so impressive. You still have to have athletes to compete. Celina has not only competed but dominated. I hope they advance into the playoffs pretty deep.

Celina's winning record probably attracts students to play, whereas in Burkburnett a 4A school, they couldn't even field a JV team this year. They went winless thisyear and not many kids wanted or will want to go out for the team knowing that they will likely lose. The opposite effect for Celina. We all know those kids that would have been a great football player, but for whatever reason they didn't play.

I'm curious, has Celina had the same coach for there current win streak? The streak may end this year.(may!) But these kids must have some unbelievable pride in there school and in there record as a football program also. I am guessing that there current win streak will not be matched for decades to come.

I believe that Newton has gone down to around 347 students.
It is hard to believe that these small schools keep churning out the quality of post season football that they do year after year.
