BLACK WATER DRAW, NEW MEXICO – The Black Water Draw Mojo nearly struck the Texas A&M-Kingsville football team on Saturday, but behind the record-setting performance of senior quarterback Billy Garza (Brownsville/Porter HS) they were able to hold on for a 35-32 Lone Star Conference win.

Garza completed a school-record 28 passes on 44 attempts breaking Abel Gonzalez’s record set during the 2001 season. Garza finished the game with 318 yards passing and three touchdowns while adding another score on the ground.

The back and forth affair appeared like it might be heading to overtime late in the fourth quarter when the Greyhounds (1-8, 0-5) lined up for a potential game-tying 37-yard field goal with 4:34 remaining. Javelina (6-3, 2-2) defensive back Mardrick Johnson (Orange/West Orange HS) made a game-saving play when he blocked the field goal giving the Hoggies the ball at their own nine yard line.

Garza proceeded to drive the team 91 yards on eight plays capped by his 5-yard touchdown run with 1:38 to play. On the drive, Billy the Kid carried the ball three times for 31 yards and was 3-of-4 for 53 yards passing. His 26-yard completion to sophomore Ryan Lincoln (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) was the record-setting completion.

The Greyhounds quickly as freshman quarterback JJ Harp drove the team 61 yards in under a minute. He connected with Joseph Banyard for a 2-yard scoring strike with 34 seconds remaining. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by the Javelinas and they were able to take a knee to end the game.

The Javelina win combined with a Midwestern State University loss to Central Oklahoma puts the Hoggies right back in the thick of the playoff race. The win also insured the team’s first winning season since 2005.

The game began poorly for the Javelinas as they went three-and-out on their first drive and then a bad snap on the punt gave the Greyhounds the ball at the Kingsville 11-yard line. The Hog defense held, but Adam Richards kicked a 28-yard field goal to give ENMU an early lead.

The lead was short lived as senior Jabir Perkins (Dallas/Irving Nimitz HS) returned the kick off 84 yards for a touchdown. It was Perkins’ second kick off return for a touchdown this season and he is averaging 40.3 yards per return.

The rest of the first quarter was spent with both offenses sputtering. The Javs gained just two first downs in the entire quarter and squandered a scoring opportunity after Marcus Sanders (Spring/Westfield HS) forced a fumble and John Reeves (Bay City/Bay City HS) recovered it at the ENMU 34-yard line.
The Javelina offense finally started to moved the ball midway through the second quarter. Taking over at the 20-yard line with 10:36 to play, Garza completed 7-of-8 passes and found Lincoln in the end zone on a four-yard scoring strike with 4:52 left in the half.

Things went down hill quickly for Javs. First, a good kick off return gave the Greyhounds the ball at the Kingsville 48-yard line. Then, Harp drove the team down the field and completed a 15-yard pass to Jacob Drinkard for a touchdown. A two-point conversion made it a 14-11 ball game.

On the ensuing kick off, Clavens Charles (Miami, FL/Southwest HS) lost a fumble giving the Greyhounds a first-and-goal. Banyard would score on a four-yard run to give the Hounds an 18-14 heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Javelinas started to take control of the game again. The defense stopped ENMU on their opening drive and then a shanked punt gave the ball back to the Javs at the ENMU 26-yard line. Garza completed a key third down pass to sophomore Damian Couthren (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) to keep the drive alive and then found senior Jareko Taylor (Detroit, MI/Ford HS) in the end zone from 10 yards out to reclaim the lead, 21-18.
The Hoggie defense continued to play well throughout the third quarter and Perkins’ interception and return to the Greyhound 8-yard line at the end of the quarter set the Javs up to up their lead.

The Javelinas did exactly that. On a third-and-goal from the 19-yard line, Garza found Taylor in the end zone for a second time giving the team a 28-18 lead.

Unfortunately, the BWD Mojo would rear its ugly head again. Harp, playing a fantastic game for the Hounds, drove his squad 80 yards in 11 plays to cut the lead to 28-25 with 10:01 to play. The drive was kept alive when Banyard took a direct snap on a fake punt and run 38 yards to the Kingsville 20-yard line.

At this point in the game, the Javelina defense took over. First, Garza made his first mistake of the game when he forced a pass that was intercepted by Reggie Butler. The A&M-Kingsville defense did not buckle and forced a punt. On the next offensive play, Garza’s pass went right through the hands of a Javelina receiver and into the hands of Tillman Stevens.

The Greyhounds started the drove at the Javelina 19-yard line and got all the way down to a first-and-goal at the five before a sack by Jason Garcia (Brownsville/Riviera HS) and Sanders forced the Hounds to attempt a field goal. Johnson’s block set up the Garza heroics and gave the Javs a needed victory.

The Javelinas had their worst rushing game of the season gaining just 26 yards on 31 carries. However, the passing game flourished under the direction of Garza. Taylor tied a school record with 12 catches while gaining 158 yards and scoring two touchdowns. It was his fourth 100-yard receiving game of the season and gave him over 100 catches in his career, just the ninth Javelina to accomplish such a feat. He now leads the team with 51 catches for 818 yards and eight touchdowns. Lincoln finished the game with six catches for 79 yards and a score while Couthren chipped in six catches for 55 yards.

The Hog defense registered four sacks and eight tackles for loss. Senior Derrick Carter (Houston/Madison HS) made five tackles, 2.5 for loss and broke up a pass while junior Jeff Edwards (Houston/Westside HS) led the team with 1.5 sacks. Perkins had an incredible game. In addition to his kick off return touchdown, he made five tackles, forced a fumble, broke up a pass and intercepted another one. Reeves and sophomore DeIra Glover (Hempstead/Hempstead HS) each led the team with eight tackles apiece.

Javelina junior punter Cody Smith, an All-America candidate, averaged 48.0 yards per punt with three of his five boots traveling over 50 yards.

The Greyhounds were led by Harp who went 36-of-61 for 297 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Darian Dale made 12 catches for 117 yards and a touchdown while Jessie Poku had 10 grabs for 90 yards. Banyard carried the ball nine times for 62 yards and a score.

Nathan Uland led the Eastern New Mexico defense with 13 tackles while Stevens and Ronald Green each had nine tackles. Devin Sweet had two of the team’s three sacks.

The Javelinas will host #2 Abilene Christian University next Saturday at Javelina Stadium at 7 o’clock. It will be Community Appreciation Day with a number of activities occurring.

My Icabods lost to Northwest Mizzou today 24-21. If we can beat Pitt State and Omaha the next two weeks and hope for a TAMU-Kingsville loss against ACU, Midwestern is due another loss to ACU and Tarleton may get another loss from West Texas -- we may squeak into the playoff picture.

The Lone Star Conference always beats up on one another.

For sures are ACU, NW Mizzou, West Texas, Central Washington

Fighting to get the last two spots are:

Washburn, Central Mizzou, Tarleton, Midwestern, & Texas A&I -- Maybe UCO.

Blackwater Draw has to be the toughest place in the nation to play. So many weird things seem to happen there. Congrats to the Hogs on coming out of there with the W:clap:

At 6-3, major props have to be given to coach Bo Atterberry and his staff on the turnaround. Remember, Atterberry took over just before fall workouts began last year after Keith Baxter left us "at the altar".

Next week should be huge. I know it will be hard to beat ACU, but we should at least all have a good time tailgating before the game and thinking about the strides this team has made and how bright the future looks. (and, who knows, maybe the Hogs could pull off an upset and get into the thick of the playoff hunt:) )

A win over ACU would be the big fat cherry on a nice chocolate sundae of a season.

But if it doesn't happen, we still know the Hogs are back from the edge.

All of you LSC fans should download "Jalisco" into your iPods...you'll be hearing it a lot in years to come.

He takes after the uncle, except for the fact that he's not cool enough to be left-footed like me:D

Nice little matchup for former teammates and friends from Navasota. TAMUK guard Markieth Wesley and ENMU def. end Randall Hutchinson were seniors on the 2004 9-2 Rattler team.
