Have you been wondering about Navasota running back Dexter Pratt?

The big-time prospect, who has committed to sign with Louisiana State, hasn't made many headlines as a senior. Pratt has been putting up decent numbers each week for the Rattlers, but not the kind that draw a double-take.

Navasota coach Lee Fedora said Pratt is doing just fine. Better than that, actually. Pratt has rushed for 619 yards on 90 carries, but those numbers don't reflect his value to the undefeated and No. 4 Rattlers.

Defenses have been loading up to stop Pratt, which has provided quarterback Jacolby Stokes and the Rattlers' receivers more room to operate. Pratt has happily averaged 15 carries per game, a light workload for one of the state's top backs.

"What I'm probably most proud of with Dexter is how unselfish he is," Fedora said. "He's tickled to death that we're winning. He ain't worried about his stats."

The Rattlers have a couple of major-college prospects in Pratt and wide receiver Brandal Jackson, who has committed to Texas A&M. They are two of the most talented players in District 24-3A, yet Pratt ranks sixth in the league in rushing and Jackson (23 catches for 529 yards and nine touchdowns) is third in receiving.

But Navasota is 6-0 overall and tied with Cameron for the league lead at 3-0, the statistics that matter most. The Rattlers lead the district in total defense and rank second behind Caldwell in total offense with 403.3 yards per game.

Navasota has great balance on offense, with 1,085 yards rushing and 1,335 yards passing. Among 24-3A teams, only Cameron has an attack with comparable success and balance.

"To me, that is just phenomenal," Fedora said.

Last week, Pratt ran for 85 yards on 23 carries. Jackson caught one pass for 15 yards. So how did Navasota roll up 397 yards and win a key district game against Rockdale, 21-14?

Quarterback Jacolby Stokes rushed for 107 yards and passed for 205 yards, running for two touchdowns and passing for another. Gaston Lamascus caught seven passes for 82 yards and earned praise from Fedora, as did receivers Antron Harris and Kolby Castillo.

"People always talk about holding Dexter Pratt to 90 yards or whatever, yet they get beat," Fedora said. "If they're so geared up to stopping one guy, that's great. We've got other weapons that can make our offense successful. The only thing that matters is the win column, and right now we're perfect on the season."

In the past Fedora's players have checked The Eagle to see where they ranked in the Brazos Valley statistics, but he said the Rattlers haven't been talking about that this season.

Maybe that's why they keep finding good news when they check Saturday's paper.

He's really a good kid. He can get excited sometimes, but you can't expect a kid with his kind of playmaking ability to just trot on and off the field everytime. We all knew how this season was going to be in the second scrimmage, when Mexia's entire team was flooding into the backfield to get a pop on him. After 10 defenders crashed the line and gang tackled him hard two plays out of three, he was about to lose his head. That is when things started opening up for the Rattler offense. A simple play action to Dexter will almost always freeze two linebackers and a safety, that is a given.
