In district 32-3A there are four teams with a 3-1 record: Hidalgo, Lyford, Raymondville & Rio Hondo.

They all play each other this week. I think Rio Hondo is too strong for Raymondville, so I went with Hidalgo @ Lyford as our "game of the week" pick.

Hidalgo will have their hands full this week with Lyford and their passing attack. QB Noe Valdez has racked up 1552 yards through the air in 7 games. Noe's main target is Andrew Delgado who has 862 yards receiving.

Lyford will have to contend with QB Steve Pedraza (856 yards) & RB John Pena (476 yards).

By the numbers:

Hidalgo offense: 145 pts scored/24 avg
Lyford offense: 226 pts scored/32 avg

Hidalgo defense: 155 pts allowed/25.8 avg
Lyford defense: 131 pts allowed/18.7 avg

Could depth hurt Lyford? Hidalgo's enrollment is 935 vs 435 for Lyford.

Neither one of these teams were expected to make much noise in early season rankings.

Thoughts? Predictions?

Lyford will win this one...their pass offense is gonna burn Hidalgo all night. Yes Hidalgo beat us 2 weeks ago but I was really not that impressed with them, we were the ones that weren't playing well and they made the fewer mistakes...and capitalized on our faults. We also had quite a few starters injured that did not play the Hidalgo game.

as to RH being too much for Ray...RH beat us last year 33-7 with a much better team. This year we are a much improved team over last years, so I believe we're gonna give the Bobcats a better game. Plus, Dustin Alejo our go to guy will be back this game since he sat out most of the Zapata game due to a leg injury.

Everyone is predicting RH to overhelm us...if this year has been any example, things don't always turn out the way they seem in 32-3A.

Lyford has their stud QB back since last week, Johnny Esparza ? Lyford passing wins them this game, defensively Hidalgo should put alot of points also.

yeah Lyford's got their starting QB back...I agree Hidalgo will run through the Bulldogs but the Bulldogs can score too quickly and I don't think Hidalgo's D is gonna slow them down enough to keep up.

we had our starting QB back this past week against Zapata too but we had Dustin Alejo out...should be 100% for RH.

Honestly, I would rather watch a 6 year old peewee football game than either of these teams play!

I think it will be close with Hidalgo pulling out the win. They'll be ticked off after the loss to RH last week and will take it out on the Bulldogs. :)

I honestly do not know which team to pick. I think I will go with Lyford. Hidalgo's QB freaks out under pressure.

Good game for sure!

Yeah, I know neither of these teams. However for the heck of it I voted for Hidalgo.

Hidalgo wins this one.

Lyford has really one played 2 decent teams: Hebbronville & Zapata and lost both those games! Not that Hidalgo's track record is much better, but coming off that big loss to Rio Hondo spells doom for the Bulldogs.

LYFORD 62, HIDALGO 31 - LYFORD -- The Lyford Bulldogs won a wild one over Hidalgo 62-31 Friday night at Bulldog Stadium to set up a showdown next week for sole possession of the District 32-3A lead.

The win was highlighted by Lyford QB Johnny Esparza's seven TD passes and wide receiver Andrew Delgado, who made a pair of TD receptions to go with his 95-yard kickoff return score and a 44-yard interception return for another TD.

The Bulldogs (6-2, 4-1 32-3A) play at district co-leader Rio Hondo (6-2, 4-1) Friday. Rio Hondo beat Raymondville 31-14 Friday.

Lyford jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first minute and a half of the game only to see Hidalgo rally for a 25-22 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs (6-2, 4-1) outscored the Pirates 40-6 in the second half.

"Hidalgo's got a great team, but I think we just outlasted them in the second half," Lyford coach Jaime Infante said. "I think we turned it up a notch on our execution in the second half. That's what we talked about at halftime and our players came through. They played their hearts out."

Delgado's 95-yard kickoff return to open the game and Jorge Lerma's 18-yard TD reception from Esparza gave Lyford a 14-0 advantage with 10:31 showing in the first quarter.

But Hidalgo (5-3, 3-2) came back to lead 25-14 as Victor Davila caught scoring passes of 62 and 34 yards from Pirate QB Steve Pedraza, Angel Nava bolted 30 yards for a score and Marcelo Lopez booted a 29-yard field goal.

Delgado caught a 9-yard scoring pass from Esparza with 4:44 left in the second quarter to make it 25-22 at the intermission.

Lyford went ahead for good, 28-25, at the 5:48 mark of the third period when Jacob Carranco caught a 6-yard scoring pass from Esparza. Also in the third quarter, Esparza, who threw for 298 yards on 24-of-45 passing with no interceptions, tossed scoring strikes of 8 and 46 yards to Jesse Quiroga and Delgado, respectively.

Hidalgo running back Noel Garcia scored on a 1-yard run with 6:46 left to make it 41-31.

Lyford then scored three times in the final 4:59 as Steve Trevino caught scoring passes fo 44 and 8 ayrds from Esparza and Delgado returned an interception 44 yards to make it 62-31 with 1:48 remaining.

Delgado caught eight passes for 126 yards.

wow, 40 point 2nd half for Lyford, with their QB back, defensively will be a challenge to contain that passing attack.
