Brookshire Royal's band is something to see. I would rather watch their band than their football team... and I HATE band. That's saying something.

Our bandies don't even want to show up when we play BR.

Brookshire-Royal, Canton and Argyle have all consistently competed at the state level in 3A and/or 2A in recent years. Not surprising that those would be among the first mentioned.

Celina has a strong band, especially for their size

(i may be a little biased, as i was one of 3  upperclassmen when the bobcats made the state finals in 2A with 23 members-the smallest ever to compete at that level-just a decade ago) :)

I will say Argyle has very quickly made a name for themselves-and are quite good!

We used to have over 100 members and won sweepstakes like 3 or 4 years in a row but then our band director left and we got new one that apparently none of the band kids liked. He was canned at the end of last year and our band has dwindled to 30-40.

Picked this info off the Burnet CISD website:

they field over 100 musicians plus 38 "Highlandettes"
and attained a Superior rating 17 years straight (incl. 4 yrs. in 4A) UIL area marching 8 times and state marching 3 times.

Having been a "Band Dad" I find it difficult to read some of the "crap" about bands some on this board spew. I sincerely hope you never have children in a marching band and have to see how little some people think of them!

Burnet has an awesome band!

I always call my mom at half with updates, since she doesn't get to make many games. So, during half of the LH/Burnet game, I called while your band was on the field. She asked how it was going and my first response was "Burnet has an incredible band". :) (The game was a little nerve-wracking, to say the least. :D )

Sealy is big. I'm guessing around 160-170 kids. http://hs.sealyisd.com/FineArts/Band.aspx

I like Brookshire Royal's band. Pretty big band with a great sound for a school their size.

Brenham is always big. Over 200 strong. Strong tradition there.

Navasota just received division 1 ratings at the Blinn marching contest. http://web.mac.com/navasotaband/NHS_BAND/Welcome.html

Overall, I think that everyone use to have a big band. In the 80's Navasota always had over 150-180 kids in band. In the early 1990's, a new band director came to Rattler land and the number dropped like a rock. Down to around 40 kids at one time. That was right when Navasota went back to 4a. We had around 90 kids when I was in high school from 95-99. Now, there are around 60 kids. They do a great job fro their size.

Our band sucks. I don't know what's up with our band director but they really don't even play during the game. It just kills the whole atmosphere. When they do decide to play some retard in the pressbox starts playing something over the speakers and drowns them out. Although I don't know exactly how many members they have, 5A Allen has a huge band. I heard one time over 400 members!

There are several outstanding bands in the NCT area. In no particular order: Whitesboro, Wills Point, Canton, Princeton and Argyle. All are outstanding and all expect to go to state.
The Celina band is very good and always competes very well in all of the concert competitions but their lack of numbers make it hard for them to compete with the bigger bands that I mentioned above.

Burnet and Canton are two EXCELLENT bands. I do believe that Canton has won the past three 3A state marching titles. I'll be biased and throw CS in there as well. We've had 18 straight years of sweepstakes and are working on 19 starting Saturday!

this is one area the RGV hasn't been lacking behind the rest of the state...back when I was in HS we qualified for state but this was when Hidalgo pretty much own the state marching contest.

Hidalgo won state in 1998 and 2000 i believe in 98 they performed Carmina Burana, that was an amazing show.

as of late Port Isabel and Rio Hondo have been consistently in the state tournament and RH got 4th in marching last state contest. both have over 100+ in their band.

1. Bellville's band. They understand how to rally during football games. They don't have a band of 40 flutes and put the big horns out there.

2. Robinson's band. Big in number, big in sound and active the whole game.

Celina's band is good. They have grown on me, and I'm not a band guy.

I can't support them fully, though. Until they stop playing "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" during the fourth quarter of every game, I can't go all out for them like I do the football team.

The worst is when we are driving for the final touchdown vs. Daingerfield and the band is playing that song.

I know it is tradition for them, but I don't like that tradition. Maybe, I should say they are violating my religious rights since I'm Church of Christ and we don't go for instruments and religious songs.

A good band...a REALLY GOOD band is NEVER Gangsta. Just because you wiggle your behind and shake all over like you have cooties doesn't mean you're any good. Some of BR's moves border on the vulgar as well. The color guard was not together and was a distraction to their show rather than an enhancement.

If you want to see a really good band then Rio Hondo has one of the best I've seen since the 1974-77 Lufkin Panther Bands!

Hondo has a rich band tradition to go along with their rich football history. They win sweepsatkes and all of those other awards bands talk about but never win state. That being said they march about 150 kids this year and are very good musicians. They always put on an entertaining halftime show and know when to play during games. So far this year in contests they have finished second to Crystal City every time. If you get a chance to watch either Hondo's or Crystal City's band you will certainly enjoy it. Crystal's band played to the Hondo crowd this last Friday and put on one heck of a show. Not as large as Hondo's Mighty Owl Band but those kids can move their feet.

When I was in HS (graduated in 1995) Ingleside HS had 411 students....130 of which were in band. I believe the "Going Band from Mustangs Land" had racked up some 30+ consecutive 1's at marching AND symphonic band contests if I'm not mistaken. Ron Welborn was a great band director.

I've said before that I'm not a big band guy, but no band in 3A has more fun than ours. Not a single one. Their performance tonight was the best that I've seen from a high school band in many years. The "Fresh Ones" are a fun group of kids to watch. I hope they do that performance again each week for the rest of the season!

Sweetwater marched well over 200 and won many awards every year back in the 60s and 70s. They were awesome! Marched at at least one Cowboys game every year. Traveled to New York to March in Massie's parade on several occasions, and were invited to many other parads to march every year, but couldnt go to all because of cost. After that band director retired though, they went way way down in a hurry. Went through several terrible band directors through the 80s and 90s, and the band dropped to about 20 to 30 members at it lowest. Finally got a much better director a few years back thats slowly but surely building it back up. But it'll never be what it once was. To many lazy kids that would rather do nothing now instead of having to put a little work in to participate. I bet we had 90% participation in band, sports, ag, chior, etc... back when I was there. Too bad it's not that way most places anymore. Congrates to those that have it.
