David Carr or Alex Smith?

I say Smith. Carr was setup for failure. He had absolutely nothing around him. Smith has failed with some legit players around him.

I vote for Carr, because he failed in his second chance. Smith hasn't had his second chance yet, so I'm holding out hope that he'll turn it around. If he doesn't, he probably surpasses Carr due to the reasons that you mentioned.

Right now I say Carr...Yes he was on an expansion team, but Alex Smith has had the injury bug hurt him as much as his play

Alex Smith is terrible and Carr is just poor. Smith hasn't been durable but though their 1st 3 respective seasons here are their numbers:
Carr- QB Rating 71.9, 34 TD's and 42 int
Smith- QB Rating 63.5, 19 TD's and 31 int

BTW, Carr was sacked 140 times and Smith 81.

Smith is the bigger bust.

I say Carr. IMO Smith was only drafted #1 because QB's were down that draft. Matt Leinart probably would have been taken first had he gone to the NFL after his junior year.

Smith... Carr was picked to be the face of an expansion franchise... nobody could have done that... Carr should have backed up Tony Banks the first year at least...
Smith went to a team that was established, they may have been a bad franchise but they at least existed...

Carr had nothing and everything was expected of him. Same with Smith. In the NFL, most QB's need to sit for 2-4 years. Those guys are much more successful than guys who start right out of college. Of course, there are exceptions. Smith had no chance with a new coordinator every year. Carr had no blocking - ever.

Carr was expected to be the savior from Day One, as a rookie, for an expansion team with no O-line. I'd say the expectations were a bit unfair. Having said that, he never lived up to the hype, and whether the unattainable expectations placed on him before he ever took an NFL snap contributed to that struggling is open for question.

Smith? Early bust, but the book isn't closed on him yet. As I remember, Drew Brees looked like a bust in his first few years -- and then he suddenly broke out.
