What do you think are the factors that are most responsible for instilling in, not just talking about, the will to win over all odds in HS players and their teams? What makes some teams and/or players excel and others shut down in the face of adversity?

IMO, the will to win is nothing without the will to prepare.

In most cases, those that are willing to claw for every inch at crunch time are those that have already learned to overcome pain and fatigue during practice and off-season. Having a strong team bond (I can't let my buddies down) is also developed during those long grueling hot workouts when what you really want to do is quit, but you just can't because no one else is.

Most kids have no idea what they are capable of; great coaches are the ones that teach them to go beyond what they think is possible. Once they break through their own self-doubt, they think anything is possible, including winning when no one else thinks you can.
