Bill Bookout, Euless Trinity's first head football coach, died from a heart attack suffered at Pennington Field before Friday's game. He was 76.

Bookout was Trinity's football coach and athletic director for eight years, beginning in 1968. He taught and coached in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District for 32 years and continued to work at the stadium before games. He played cornerback at the University of Oklahoma and spent two years with the Green Bay Packers.

"Coach Bookout was a mentor for all our coaches and to me particularly," Trinity coach Steve Lineweaver said. "I felt a bond with him because he kind of understood what coaches go through. He was a great example. He was a man's man."

He is survived by his wife, Kay, three children, 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
