Looking in my storage reading some of my old newspapers clippings, what to my surprise i came across articles printed on the morning of Sept. 28, 1991 interesting stories. Could picture District 31-3A in back in the day. If we were put the same district back then, Most of today's players were either a year old or not even born yet. Some of us may remember these games very clearly, like it was yesterday

31-3A In The Year 1991:)

Third-ranked Sinton rushes past Mathis
Visiting Bucs net 490 yards, 48-6 victory

West Oso claims 3rd straight win
Bears use rushing, passing attack, hand Ingleside its first loss, 28-14

Panthers down Badgers, 29-14
AP rebounds from loss last week, takes advantage of Bishop miscues

Robstown slams Falfurrias
Pickers overcome off-field troubles in 41-0 victory

Hebbronville Ties Orange Grove 13-13

Back in 1991 these games were non-district back in September, Robstown was the only team in Class 4A at that time

If you got interesting articles from back in the day of your current district post your headlines ;)

I remember a neat November 1980 headline in the Bryan-College Station Eagle that read: "Color District 23-2A Burnt Orange!"

It's before UIL ended Class B, moving all the teams up a numbered classification (1982 was the first year 2A became 3A, if I recall.)

Caldwell and Rockdale went into the final week of the season with identical 9-0 records, with everything on the line. Rockdale was favored by 9 points because of their tradition at the time and for winning district the year before.

It was Standing Room Only at good ole' Hornet Field (old stadium). The game was tied 6-6 until about 5 or 6 minutes remaining when Caldwell's Kelvin Burns busted in for a score, giving the Hornet fans a sigh of relief with a 13-6 lead and hopes for an upset. After holding Rockdale on downs, Caldwell scored another TD with about 2 or 3 minutes left. The good PAT ensured the Hornets of a 20-6 upset victory and the first district title in nine years.

Sadly, only one team advanced back then and I remember Rockdale players being very heartsick and downright fuming (and rightfully so) over the devastating loss after such an incredible 9-1 season. You felt sorry for them but overjoyed that your hometown had pulled away with a statewide shocker.

The next week was deja-vu against a highly-regarded state-ranked Marble Falls team in bi-district. It seems like the scoring scenario was identical with Caldwell scoring two late TD's to break a 6-6 tie and beating Marble Falls by the same 20-6 score. The next week, we recovered a fumble in our own end zone against state-ranked Waller in regionals to surrender a safety and set up Waller to survive with a hard-fought 9-7 win on a cold night at Spring Branch's Tully Stadium.

Ah, the memories......

Here's the article of Sinton-Mathis game printed Sept. 28, 1991, For all Sinton fans

Corpus Christi Caller-Times

Third-ranked Sinton rushes past Mathis
Visiting Bucs net 490 yards, 48-6 victory

From Correspondent Reports

MATHIS- Sinton High School, the third-ranked Class 3A football team in the state, lived up to its billing Friday night by clubbing Mathis, 48-6 in a non-district game.

Sinton rushed for 418 yards and totalled 490 yards offense as it improved to 4-0. Mathis fell to 1-3.

The game featured a strange start as Mathis took the opening kickoff and drove to the Sinton 1-yard line only to get a delay of game penality and eventually lose the ball on downs.

On Sinton's initial possession, the Pirates ran for four plays and fumbled at their 33-yard line. Mathis this time drove to the Sinton 18, only to suffer a quarterback sack and again turn the ball over on downs. After that, it was all Sinton.

Ross Partlow started the avalanche as he raced 70 yards to the Mathis 3. Quarterback Ruben Trigo scored two plays later with 1 minute, 34 seconds left in the first period and Jeremy Burnell kicked the extra point for a 7-0 first quarter advantage.

Sinton scored twice in the second period as Burnell broke for a 60-yard touchdown run and converted on the extra-point kick and Trigo hit Rene Cantu with a 72-yard scoring pass play. The extra point kick failed. Sinton led at halftime, 20-0.

Partlow scored on runs of 2 and 17 yards in the third period and Burnell added both PATs for a 34-0 Sinton lead at the end of the third period.

Burnell continued the onslaught by returning a punt 65 yards and adding another PAT for a 41-0 advantage early in the fourth period. Mathis finally scored in the fourth quarter, driving 71 yards on seven plays. Isaac Gaitan scored on a 42-yard pass play from Alex Flores.

Sinton's last TD came on a 2-yard run by Adrian Orta. Burnell kicked the extra point.

Partlow led all rushers with 128 yards on eight carries. Ryan Martinez rushed 78 yards on eight carries and Burnell add 78 yards on nine more.

My son, who is a senior this year, was only 8 months old in September of 1991! Wow, time speeds by you like a flash. I wasn't following any 3a teams then, only my hometown 5a team.

Funny how time changes things quick most of these players now days had their dads or moms a football player, cheerleader, or in band. And now they are doing the same thing these days what there parents did.

Even stranger than that, a lot of the kids on the 91 team were kids of people I went to school with in the 60's.

UIL Changed the classifications in 1980. Caldwell's, Cameron's, Rockdale's district was 23 3A in 1980.
Cameron won 3A title in '81
