FORNEY – Lancaster wasn't afraid of doing whatever it took to stop Forney's running attack, even if it meant bringing seven or eight players to the line of scrimmage.

It worked as the Lancaster defense held running back Peter Smith to 34 yards in the first half and Forney (5-1, 1-1) lost its first game of the year, 17-10, at City Bank Stadium.

Led by defensive end Anthony Gilbert and Cordarious Golston, Lancaster also forced a pair of turnovers.

Lancaster (4-3, 3-0) takes over first place in District 15-4A as it heads into a bye week.

"We've been preaching about getting over the top, and we needed a win like this," Lancaster coach Andrew Jackson said.

To support its defensive performance, Lancaster needed a pair of trick plays.

In the first half, Lancaster took the lead, 10-7, thanks to a halfback pass. Phillip Harvey received the handoff and threw a 41-yard pass to Skyler Scott that set up a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Thedford Rhodes.

Harvey finished with 130 yards on 18 carries. Scott caught four passes for 105 yards.

Lancaster regained the lead, 17-10 in the third quarter on a fake punt.

On fourth-and-7, Kendall Hayes, who replaced injured punter Freeman Kelley, ran it all the way from Forney's 40-yard line for a touchdown.

"That was a hell of a call," Jackson said. "I got talked into it."

Smith finished with 123 yards on 23 carries.

was a good game - Lancaster's defense was (obviously) the best FHS has seen this season, by far

@ W Mesquite next week for FHS
