Rating the quarterbacks

Using the NFL's formula to calculate a quarterback's efficiency rating, we crunched some numbers for Central Texas high school passers, using completions, attempts, yards, touchdowns and interceptions.

It is important to note that these ratings merely reflect a quarterback's efficiency as a passer, and not the other factors -- including leadership, toughness and big-play ability -- that make a successful quarterback.

Generally, the ratings can be correlated with numbers from the standard school grading system, where a score in the 90s is an A, in the 80s is a B, and so on. NFL passing yardage is affected by yards lost on sacks; in high school, it's not.

Ratings are calculated by a formula that takes into consideration a passer's percentage of completions per attempt; his average yards gained per attempt; his percentage of touchdown passes per attempt; and his percentage of interceptions per attempt. The more touchdown passes and fewer interceptions you throw, the higher your rating will be.

Central Texas players are ranked according to their quarterback rating. Here are the top 25:

Stephen McGee, Burnet 147.8

Keith Null, Lampasas 119.9

Adam Dominguez, Belton 119.1

Matt Parsons, Leander 111.1

Jeremy Melendez, C. Park 109.8

Todd Dodds, Fredericksburg 108.6

J.R. Kirkendoll, Round Rock 104.2

Ben McMahon, McCallum 103.5

Scott Warner, Thrall97.6

Curtis Smithson, John. City 95.6

Michael Cantu, N. Braunfels 94.5

Jacob Kaase, Manor 92.2

Matt Aubry, Westwood 86.3

Jacob Johnson, Bastrop 85.9

Houston Erbstoesser, G'town 83.4

Josh Gonzales, Crockett 81.7

Dexter Hanson, Liberty Hill 81.1

Todd Walker, Pflugerville 75.1

Jarret Buchholtz, Luling 74.1

McGee has an unbelievably gaudy 147...and with 0 interceptions last night and some TD's added that's not going down anytime soon. Aggie's picked up a great pro-style qb (with a touch of scrabbling ability) wink
