Through the years there have been many teams that were the consensus odds-on favorites to win State late in the season, but somehow lost before getting there.

Two of the most memorable examples I remember:

03' Burnet

03' Decatur

Any others, especially from the 70's, 80's, & 90's?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think '04 Decatur is the team you're thinking about.

May have been, Pick---I think it was the year that Decatur stomped Abilene Wylie during the regular season then lost to them in the playoffs.

That was '04.

Wylie beat Cuero in state that year.

Sweetwater in 1989 (or was it 1988?) anyway, ranked #1 most of the year. Played Herford for bi-district on the frozen tundra at Jones Stadium. Tech and Houston played in a huge snow storm that afternoon and the snow had frozen solid in the turf.

It was like 10 below zero wind chill.....I have never been so cold in my life!

Sweetwater in 1988

They were the consesus #1 4A team in the state and went 10-0
during the regular season. That team had roughly 17 starters
and 40+ letterman returning from a state semi-final team that
lost to Rockwall 13-7 in Amon Carter stadium the year before.

They were knocked out by Hereford in the first round up at
Lowery Field in Lubbock. Folks around here call that game the
Ice Bowl.

Wasn't there a really good Jasper team that was supposed to roll but blew it?... Recently I think of Giddings 06-07. Thought it was the best team I had ever seen at the time. Gilmer from two or three years ago losing in the first round of the playoffs to eventual state champ Liberty Eylau. Wasn't around in the 70's or 80's so I can't really say much about that.

In 1962 4A (Largest Class then) the experts thought the State Championship game was going to be between Dumas and Houston Spring Branch. At that time only District Champions advanced and there were only 16 districts in 4A. San Antonio Breckenridge had a great player in WR Warren McVea but they had lost I think 4 of their first 5 games and I think all the games were district games during the season. The district was supposedly weak so even with those loses the other teams beat themselves out and San Antonio Breckenridge won the last five and was barely able to win the distriect and advanced. They had been unfavored to win the district and were unfavored to win in all the playoff games. If you picked one team that you expected to not win state of all the playoff teams you would have picked San Antonio Breckenridge. They beat in Bi-District favored San Antonio Highlands 21 to 3. In the Quarterfinals they beat Brownsville Hanna 38 to 13.
Then in the semis there was no way they were going to beat Houston Spring Branch especially with the game being in Houston but they did just that 30 - 26. This was a shocker.

No way for them to beat Dumas in the State Championship game but Dumas was the one to be shocked again as they won it all 30 to 26. The West Texas sports writers couldn't believe.

Warren McVea was moved to QB in 1963 and the team had success but they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in a great game with San Antonio Lee 55 to 48. McVea went on to star at Houston and the Kansas City Chiefs as a WR and punt returner. He played and contributed to the Chiefs' success in their super bowl win in 1970.

When the best player on the field is taken out, things do tend to change.

Because Riley was hurt. The stars aligned for Abilene to win

Maybe, maybe not...but I don't recall the original post stating anything about WHY the team lost.
