SOUTHLAKE -- A children's salon at Southlake Town Square says its hairstylists are seeing an increase of head lice among their young clients.

Officials at Sweet & Sassy, a salon and spa for girls ages 5 to 11, say they have noticed one to two cases each day of head lice, said Lisa Gail Barnes, a public relations specialist for the company.

But most public school campuses in the Southlake-based Carroll district have had no cases or few cases of lice this fall, said Julie Thannum, district spokeswoman.

At Carroll Elementary School, 16 cases of head lice have been reported among the school’s 600 students. A letter was sent home notifying parents at the campus in early September, Thannum said. Head lice is commonly treated with a special shampoo available at most drugstores.

Barnes prompted the discussion Tuesday with an e-mail to the Star-Telegram with the subject line "Lice-Styles of the Rich and Famous." In the e-mail, Barnes warned of a "massive outbreak of lice in our salons." She also mentioned an organic shampoo line her salon sells as a preventative treatment for lice.

Her warning was reported Tuesday night by two area television news stations.

Today, Barnes said if a client of her salon is suspected of having lice, the child is removed from the salon and advised to see a physician. The area is sterilized.

Head lice do not transmit disease and are not considered a health hazard, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Head lice is not required to be reported to the Tarrant County Public Health Department. Officials there have received no other reports of increased cases of head lice in the area, said Vanassa Joseph, a spokeswoman.
