DISD's budget mess looks a lot like an opportunity to one of the nation's largest school districts.

The Clark County school district, with more than 310,000 students in the greater Las Vegas area, is trying to hire nearly 400 teachers. Officials there are looking to the Dallas school district, which might soon be shedding more than 600 teachers to fill a $64 million budget hole.

"If there are a large number of candidates available in the Dallas area, we will be dispatching recruitment teams right away to interview these people," said Bill Garis, deputy human resource officer for the Clark County district.

Mr. Garis said his district has openings for middle and high school math and science teachers and for special education teachers in all grades.

"A district like Dallas would ... have an advantage with us over a lot of districts because the teachers there are dealing with probably many of the same issues that we do," he said.

Aimee Bolender, head of the largest teacher organization in Dallas, said the prospect of work in Las Vegas is good news for DISD employees who might soon be out of work.

"Simply stated, hallelujah," she said. "Being able to offer people an opportunity to get a position ... in another district that is actually reaching out to them and saying, 'We want you,' is the first bit of really good news we've heard in a long time."

DISD trustees have declared a financial state of emergency and are set to consider Thursday whether to give Superintendent Michael Hinojosa the authority to lay off hundreds of teachers.
