View Full Version : Farthest team you've played in regular season?

For Caldwell's regular season, I'd guess it was Needville in terms of travel back in the 90's. 110 miles. Liberty Hill and Lake Travis were probably about the same distance in late 90's.

Shepherd this year was played at neutral site (Huntsville). Caldwell played Fort Worth Nolan in the 60s, according to LoneStarFootball.net.

For playoffs, I'd guess it would be Sweeny in 84 (135 miles), Cuero (118 miles) in 94 and Kirbyville (180ish) last year.

Nearest team we've never played (Groesbeck, 80 miles). Nearest team we haven't played in a long time: Sealy 30 years ago. It's only 62 miles.

I think all teams should schedule one long-distance team they meet halfway every year for non-district to make things interesting... like Robinson vs. Iowa Park, or A&M Consolidated vs. Pampa in the 90's.

Forney went up to Denison a couple of years ago, furthest I can think of. 1.5 hours

Copperas Cove made the drive all the way up to DFW to play McKinney Boyd 3.5 hours

Woo, you talk about a butt falling asleep. LOL
An afternoon Saturday game (similar to college) against teams like that would be cool and entire towns could make it because of fewer working hour conflicts.

Muleshoe to Perryton is 218 miles. when we were 3A and in the upper Panhandle district. Right now that district extends from Lubbock Estacado, Lubbock Cooper to Dalhart to Perryton. Horrible road trips for those folks.

drove 419 miles to Dallas for state 3A semi-final in 2000. Should have stayed home. but did get to see the fastest RB in Texas that year.

Cameron once played in Alvin(183miles), Henderson (181), and Stephnville (136) in the same year. It was 1957 so the buses probably weren't to fun.

Jasper played Benton, Arkansas one year

Denison played Big Spring this year, played Kerrville Tivy at Baylor a few years ago, hosted MMA Harlingen a couple of times, and went to Florida one year

This talk reminds me of traveling to Big Bend about 12 years ago and hearing tales of how the school aged kids in Terlingua had to travel more than 80 miles ONE WAY to Alpine for school.

You wake up at 5 am, leave on bus at 6 am, get to school at 7:45, get out of school around 4 pm, arrive home close to 6 pm, inhale your supper, do homework for an hour or two and crash by 10 pm. Lather, rinse repeat five days a week. Imagine if you had band rehearsal or were in athletics and had to arrange a ride home.... and Alpine's teams aren't even that great any more! YIKES

Since then, though, I think I read where Terlingua opened a K-8 school.

nunya

Yea, and a few years ago Navasota played Texarkana Liberty Eylau. That was quit a jaunt, too. At least their coaches do stuff original sometimes.

In recent years, it seems Caldwell does nothing more than shuffle Columbus, La Grange, Mexia, a Waco school, Bellville, Lexington and Smithville and whichever ones aren't slapped in the same district they schedule as warm-up games. Boooooring.
If gas is the issue, then as I said earlier, meet someone 100 miles away half the distance.

I'd like to see Caldwell play Crockett even and its only 95 miles.

back in 4a, i think the average distrcit game was about 160 miles...the 40 miles drive to snyder was easy...(too bad it stuck like crap when we got there :D)

i remember heading out for football games in middle school around 10am for a game a few times.

yea, but generally the only teams that schedule out-of-state games are those with something to prove nationally.

Caldwell's still trying to get respect on HERE! LMAO

For WO-S I would guess that Texarkana would probably be the furthest away of any team we played in the regular season. We lost to them in '84 at home and then traveled the 230 miles to Texarkana and demolished them in '85 (my sophomore and junior years).

The 2000 4A Finals was probably the furthest WO-S ever had to travel for a playoff game. Lost to Ennis at Texas Stadium. Not a fun 265 mile drive back home.

The most outrageous travel schedule I've ever come across in all my historical research has to be Port Arthur Jefferson's schedules in the middle of the great depression from 1937 and 1938. Marblehead, Massachusetts came to Texas in '37 and the team from TJ took a train all the way from Texas to Massachusetts to play the return game in '38. In addition to that, they traveled 500+ miles to play several other games those two seasons, including teams from 5 different states.

Sr. year so fall '05, Graham to Levelland and back in one day . . . 500 miles. That was one of those car rides where you and your friends start getting dilerious and everything is the funniest thing you've ever seen. Then the spring before we played Levelland in Lubbock in the Boys Regional Finals and made the 440 miles in one day.

About eight years ago, Caldwell scrimmaged Tatum in Palestine. Never understood that. All that way for a scrimmage and then they tied. Not worth the trip.

Traveled to Amarillo Palo Duro once when I was in high school. Game was on a Thursday night and we had school on Friday. Also took a few trips to Pecos and Ft. Stockton.

In 1996 and 1997 Sweetwater drew El Paso schools in the first round of the playoffs. In the 1996 season we flipped El Paso High home and home and they ended up having to come out to Sweetwater.

For Brownwood, we had a four year stint with Permian so 2 games there. Also in the late 90s Wichita Falls High and Brownwood were in the same district. That is roughly from the Center of the State to the most Northern(not panhandle) for a district game.

Back in 1975 Gonzales went to Beaumont to play Hebert in a non-district game. Hung tough before losing a week after getting demolished by Cuero. That was the closest the Apaches came to a playoff game in 30 years.
