I don't know how this has not been discussed yet? Cleveland went on the road, albeit 15 miles, and beat a 5A squad. I think we should be taking Cleveland serious. Whoever draws them in the first round out of 21-3A had better be ready. Story from the Montgomery County Courier below:
NEW CANEY - Three weeks after being grounded by Hurricane Ike, the New Caney Eagles were unable to get airborne at home Friday night, losing to the Cleveland Indians 30-0.
The Eagles struggled in every facet, managing just 100 yards total offense, while the defense was pounded by a strong running game and the accurate passing of Indians quarterback Ernest Carrington.
New Caney had the game's first possession but couldn't get anything going, and the Indians took over at their own 40-yard line, following a punt by Jake Stewart. Employing a committee approach on the ground, the Indians marched down the field, scoring after eight plays. Benny Wright and Steven Robertson carried the load, and a 42-yard pass from Carrington to Jeremy Lowe set up an eventually three-yard scoring run by Brian Navarro. The two-point conversion failed, but the Indians led it 6-0.
After Cleveland's defense dropped Eagles quarterback Benny Rios on a sack and a short punt followed, the Indians continued their ground attack, as Jamal Gibson scampered across midfield for a 20-yard run. The committee rushing attack continued into the early moments of the second quarter and the Indians found paydirt with a one-yard touchdown plunge by Joe Robertson. Another two-point attempt failed, leaving the score 12-0 with 11:03 left in the half.
New Caney's offense continued to struggle and another short punt gave the Indians good field position again, starting at the Eagle 40-yard line. On the first play of the possession, Gibson raced down the sideline for what appeared to be a score, but a blocking in the back penalty negated it. However, Carrington and the Indians weren't to be denied, as he found Gibson for a 27-yard completion, and Marcus Mallet did the rest, scoring from 13 yards out. Yet another two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving it 18-0 Cleveland wtih 8:02 left in the second.
The Indians weren't done in the half, though. Cleveland pooched the kickoff and the Eagles recovered, but New Caney couldn't get anything going. On the punt attempt, a bad snap left punter Stewart scrambling, before the defense dropped him for a 13-yard loss and a turnover on downs. Taking advantage of the short field, Cleveland's Cordney Bennett and Wright pounded the ball inside the 10, and Steven Robertson had back-to-back carries, including a three-yarder for the touchdown. The PAT failed but Cleveland still led 24-0.
The third quarter started off better for the Eagles, who had just one first down in the half. The defense stopped the Indians for minimal gain on the opening possession of the frame, then the offense came alive. Rios carried the ball for six yards, then found Zack Smith for a seven-yard strike two plays later. Christian Perez then stepped up, getting a 12-yard gain inside the Cleveland 35. But three incompletions and a run for a loss stalled the drive and the ball went over on downs again.
Running on the legs of Gibson and Bennett, the Indians once again marched into New Caney territory, and a 40-yard pass from Carrington to Cedric Reed set up the game's final touchdown, a two-yard run by Navarro. The extra point was blocked by New Caney's Stewart, leaving the final score at 30-0.
New Caney falls to 1-2 on the season with the loss.
