Pirates' defense stops Bulldogs in their tracks

SINTON -- In the preseason, Sinton High School coach Tom Allen was encouraged that his Pirates had finally found a grasp of the spread offense. It came too late for the 2007 campaign but optimism was rampant for 2008.

Fortunately for Allen, his Pirates haven't had to regrasp any defensive concepts.

Sinton opened District 31-3A play with a 28-14 victory over Orange Grove Friday night at Pirate Stadium. In moving to 3-0 overall in the process, the Pirates used a stout defense to limit the Bulldogs to 209 yards of offense, just 87 coming in the second half. In three ballgames, Sinton is allowing just shy of 18 points per outing.

In compiling 475 yards of offense, the Pirates retained possession for a whopping 30 minutes, 9 seconds. Sinton's two-headed quarterbacking tandem of junior Josh Harrison and sophomore Carson Cave combined for 311 total yards. Harrison tossed two touchdown passes and Cave had one. Richard Orta scored one rushing and one receiving TD, and Marshall Harrison and Ryan Cantu each had TD receptions.

Keyed by defensive backs Matt Gaitan and Ram Sanchez and linebackers Orta and Taylor Kirkpatrick, Sinton held the 2-2 Bulldogs to 117 yards on the 39 plays that didn't result in TDs for the Grove.

The Bulldogs had as many first downs in the first 7:13 of the third quarter than they had the entire first half but couldn't get closer than 14-6. The Pirates, however, were in the midst of a scoring drive as the third quarter ended. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Josh Harrison found a wide-open Cantu in the corner of the end zone for a 21-6 lead to cap an 88-yard drive.

Sinton's defense held again, and the Pirates iced the game with a 77-yard drive, using 7:06 off the clock before Cave connected with Orta on a 9-yard scoring pass. The fourth Jeremy Laws' point-after-touchdown kick made it 28-6.

The Bulldogs made matters look a little better on the next series, traveling 55 yards for a touchdown on Kelton Craven's 28-yard pass to a wide-open Trey Porras. Jose Martinez's 2-point run accounted for the final margin.

Sinton likely could have had a larger lead than 14-6 at halftime. The numbers all were in the Pirates' favor. They had the ball for 15 minutes, 36 seconds, outgained the Bulldogs 299-122, ran 22 more plays from scrimmage than the Grove and had a 16-3 edge in first downs.

That sounds good. Glad they weren't too serious. A little rehab and rest will work wonders. It always scares me to see anybody's kids go down on the field. I enjoyed meeting all you guys too, and good luck to yall the rest of the way.

#18 is a junior that started out on varsity and was moved down to give him some more playing time he really impressed me thursday, Didnt look like it but varsity RB's are alot better than they showed last night, Bottom Line Sinton showed up last night to play football and we didnt, Robstown beating WO sure changed my predictions on District play if OG dont get it 2gether and have a good game against Robstown it is going to be a short season

It is not. If you have to go, don't go unarmed, wear some sort of bullet proof vest, don't carry too much cash, and if possible catch a ride with someone else. You don't want to take your own vehicle there.
