well, can we sign free agents and not worry about salary ramifications?

If so, I go with:

C-Ivan Rodriguez (just on a one-year deal so he retires a Ranger)
1B-Hank Blalock
2B-Ian Kinsler
SS-Michael Young
3B-Chris Davis
LF-Manny Ramirez
CF-Josh Hamilton
RF-Bobby Abreu
DH-Vladmir Guererro

P1: CC Sabathia
P2: Ben Sheets
P3: AJ Burnett
P4: Vicente Padilla
P5: Matt Harrison

CL: Fransisco Rodriguez

On the other hand, if you're asking me to be realistic about what the roster will look like:

C-Gerald Laird (Teagarden as backup)
1B-Hank Blalock
2B-Ian Kinsler
SS-Michael Young
3B-Chris Davis (swap Davis and Blalock if Blalock's shoulder fully heals)
LF-David Murphy
CF-Josh Hamilton
RF-Milton Bradley/Nelson Cruz
DH-Bradley/Cruz/Marlon Byrd

SP1: Kevin Millwood
SP2: Vicente Padilla
SP3: John Garland
SP4: Matt Harrison
SP5: Brandon McCarthy

CL: Frankie Fransisco

How much would you want the Rangers to spend next year?

Global Swarming
09-19-2008, 01:40 PM
I would want the Rangers to spend as much as it takes to win the West. We have got to get some top of the line pitching no matter what it cost. They can't go out there and score six or seven runs a night to win.

Problem is, "whatever it costs" isn't necessarily going to get you anywhere...look at the biggest contracts for free agent pitchers...MOST of them have been colossal flops...

San Francisco tried "whatever it costs" to get Barry Zito, who was considered the premier pitcher on the market.

Look what opening the pocket book got Detroit. It got them a
71-80 record with eleven games left in the season.:(

I wouldn't be surprised if Laird wasn't used as trade bait.

I'd also keep Chris Davis at 3rd regardless of what happens to Blalock. Smoak(sp) will be playing 1st base for the Rangers after next September's call ups.

Let's see...

My team 71-81 record
48 Million dollar payroll with one player having an 8 figure salary.

Your team 71-80
138 Million dollar payroll with 6 players having an 8 figure salary.

My team is run better.

You're right about Davis. You have to keep him at 3rd. He has a big arm and it's apparent that Blalock doesn't have the desire or maybe he doesn't have the capability to play third anymore. I believe that it's psychological for him now.

Exactly. I was trying to help prove crzy's point not challenge it.
Spending alot of money on free agents doesn't always translate
to more wins on the field.

You're kidding right? Let me refresh your memory:
A-Rod= A-Hole
Chan Ho Park- Injuries
McCarthy- Injured....Still
Millwood- Hot and Cold
Mark Eaton- Injured, then traded and injured some more

Just a few of the big money contracts awarded to free agents that suck, have sucked, or are in the process of sucking.

I say continue the youth movement and re-sign Hamilton. That over spending enormous sums of money for tired ass, injured knuckleheads.

Could that possibly be from the same series won in 7 by the good guys who were on their way to beating a certain team from a certain Michigan city? :)

It would probably be like Randy Johnson pitching but without actually knowing what he was doing...;)

You're probably be right. If I knew then what I know now. I
would have paid somebody to lock Worthy in the janitor's closet
before the game.

I honestly don't care who's catching next year as long as it's NOT Saltalamacchia...please...someone take him for anything at all that's somewhat promising.

I like Laird, Ramirez, and Teagarden.

Smoak won't be in the bigs by next year...he's going to need at least until the second half of 2010 before he'll be sniffing the big leagues.

I love the way you think. I wish Sabathia would sign with the RANGERS this offseason. I disagree with Michael Young playing 3rd and Nelson Cruz playing right. I really think David Murphy will be back in the line-up next season.

I think the Rangers would like to see an opening day outfield of:

LF Murphy
CF Hamilton
RF Cruz

I agree. I don't see any way that Murphy isn't in the opening day outfield outside of injury...he proved himself worthy of everyday play this year when he was supposed to be a reserve, and he really had a lot of energy that the team fed off of.

Marlon Byrd has proved that he should be in the starting next year. He has just can't start off as slow as he did this year. It's definately a good problem thet have with five outfielders having the talent to start. I really like Vazquez but just do see any room for him on next years team. Maybe we can trade him for a decent pitcher.

Byrd is a serviceable player but he has done nothing to prove he deserves the 3rd starting spot.

Vazquez is a free agent. He has already indicated that he'll search for a job elsewhere to be an everyday starter.

yea Bearkat...I totally forgot about Murphy, he's been gone so long. He goes back in as starter and then other spot is between Byrd, Cruz and Boggs
