Caldwell runs wild on Waco Connally

CALDWELL -- Riding a robust running game, the Caldwell Hornets found a great way to show they need to improve on extra points and kickoff coverage.

The Hornets ran for 545 yards and rolled over Waco Connally 53-12 at Hornet Field on Thursday night.

Caldwell was brutally effective with its Slot-T attack that almost seems squeezed tight enough to operate in a phone booth. The Hornets stung the Cadets with several long touchdown runs in the first half, then put together two time-eating scoring drives in the second half.

"We're a blue-collar community," Caldwell coach Dale Williams said. "We've got blue-collar kids. By-God, we're going to go to work and be blue-collar about what we do."

Junior Nelson Scott rushed for 195 yards on 11 carries and senior Randel Lister gained 191 on nine carries. Both contributed two touchdown runs. Junior Kysan Woolverton added 151 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

All three runners took advantage of some surprisingly large gaps in the Connally backfield after breaking through the first wave of defenders. They found that running room because the Caldwell offensive line had a big night.

The blockers included tackles Mark Havens and Zach Kelly, guards Adrian Sheppard and Trent Meckel, center Jared Mathis and tight end Jacob Fuller.

"They had a super night," Williams said. "For our offense to execute like that, it comes from our offensive linemen. They're the keys to all of our success."

Caldwell (2-1) missed on three extra-point kicks and one pass in the first half, but the Hornets made both kicks in the second half. Caldwell allowed a couple of long kickoff returns early, but improved in that area, too.

Two days before Caldwell's annual Kolache Festival, the first half was a feast of big plays by the Hornets. Caldwell scored on six of seven possessions, with touchdown plays ranging from 32 to 66 yards.

Caldwell showed signs of things to come on the third play of the game, when Lister emerged from a scrum near the middle of the line and burst 52 yards for a touchdown. The Hornet defense got in the act when Nicholas Havemann forced a fumble that was covered by Ryan Surovik.

The game turned after that, as Caldwell put together a 78-yard scoring drive in five plays. The Hornets overcame a 15-yard penalty as Lister scored on a 32-yard run.

The next Caldwell possession was short and sweet. Scott raced 63 yards on the first play, pushing the lead to 19-0.

Connally (1-2) answered with an 82-yard touchdown drive, but it took the Hornets just two plays to respond. Scott roared 66 yards for his second consecutive touchdown to make it 25-6.

Caldwell attempted only one pass in the game, and it worked for a 46-yard touchdown. Scott leaped to make a juggling catch and then broke a tackle to score with 7 seconds left in the first half.

.....heeeeeeeere we go

but seriously, I am impressed that there is acknowledgment. It was a nice accolade and the team deserved it.

I'm definitely going to the Bellville-giddings game now and that's no "jk."

Go BUlls.

at Madisonville week after this one, which is open. If Hornets can win it on the road, they host Rudder the next week and could be 4-1 when they travel to Navasota.
