Football: Monahans can't complete rally against Sweetwater

September 13, 2008 - 1:23AM
BY WILLIE BANS

MONAHANS Head coach Mickey Owens stressed it: Monahans didn't lose Friday night because of a missed 22-yard field goal attempt that could've tied the game with 1:05 remaining.

The Loboes, he told his team, lost 17-14 against Sweetwater at Estes Stadium because of a 17-point halftime deficit, not because Ivan Rios' kick went wide right.

Monahans' second-half surge did fall short, although it was strong enough that Owens decided to play for overtime instead of the win, facing a fourth-and-goal on the Mustangs' 5-yard line.

"We could've gone for the win there, and then you don't make it and people say, ‘Coach, you got an extra-point field goal, basically," said Owens, whose team is 1-1 while Sweetwater improved to 2-1. "We had the momentum, so I figured, all right, let's go to overtime. We had them on their heels."

Indeed, Sweetwater lost two fumbles and had a punt blocked in the second half, and the Loboes, unlike in the first half, took advantage.

With 5:58 remaining, the Mustangs' Daniel Jackson turned the ball over on a fumble and Monahans recovered on its own 43-yard line.

On the ensuing play, Loboes quarterback Quincy Titus found receiver Kalep Warden for a 43-yard connection. Two plays later, Ty Horton punched an 8-yard dive into the end zone, and after a successful two-point conversion, the Loboes were behind 17-14 with 4:46 remaining.

On the subsequent kickoff, Jackson fumbled again, and Monahans recovered on its own 49. It took eight plays before Aranda's field goal attempt, and running back Stephen Neel, battling leg cramps like many players on a humid night, had carried the ball three times in the drive, in which the Mustangs defense held firm enough.

"Our kids fought back, got us back in it, and fought their butts off," Owens said. "Down 17-0, we could've very easily played horrible in the second half."

After halftime, the Loboes stacked the defensive line and blunted a Sweetwater rushing attack that in the first half ran for 265 yards, 152 by Jackson, who tallied minus-2 yards after that.

"These are two good teams, and anybody who expected anything less tonight was naive," Mustangs head coach Kent Jackson said.

In the first half, Sweetwater scored 10 points off two turnovers, and Monahans couldn't came up empty after a first-half fumble by the Mustangs.

Late in the second quarter, Monahans went for it on fourth-and-13 on Sweetwater's 16-yard line, and Quincy Titus' pass was intercepted. Two plays later, Jackson found a crease in the middle and took it 94 yards for a score, making it 14-0 Sweetwater at the 2:31 mark.

The Loboes got the ball back and two plays later Titus threw his second pick; the Mustangs cashed in on Cameron Studdard's 27-yard field goal.

Neel, who had 205 rushing yards in the team's previous game, mustered just 3 yards on five carries in the first half, the Sweetwater defensive line winning the battle of the trenches, particularly on dive plays. Neel finished with 29 yards on 10 carries, as a fresher Tyson Childress took the bulk of the carries and tallied 76 yards on eight carries.

The Mustangs controlled the tempo in the first half, pounding and pounding the ball, attempting just four passes, two in the first quarter.

The lone completion in the first quarter was a 12-yard touchdown reception by receiver Zach Wetsel, who was uncovered on the right side. His score made it 7-0 at the 2:02 mark in the first quarter, capping a 13-play drive that lasted 5:20.

Monahans mustered just six offensive plays in the first quarter, coming out "real flat" after a bye week, Owens said.

Following the loss, Owens addressed the Loboes, their heads struggling to remain high.

"Look," he told them, "I know you hate losing. I hate losing, too. But this can't stay with you. Get rid of it in the morning."
