View Full Version : Terrell Owens Deserves a Fine!!!!

Who do these pro football players think they are doing all these fancy pre-meditated celebrations? I'm just tired of it! Back in my day you handed the ball to the official and quietly walked to the sideline and didn't say a word. All these spoiled pro athletes like TO and Ocho Cinco need to be suspended everytime they do a dumb celebration! Suspend TO for four games for that display today against Cleveland!

Clean it up Roger and clean it up fast!

TO has CROSSED THE LINE! Suspend him and suspend him now! I tune in to see two teams play. I don't want to see all this extra-carricular stuff going on! It's not entertaining!

Do your job Roger and send a message to other miscreants around the league by suspending TO!

"Coach Joe" Avezanno said it shouldn't have even been a penalty and he saw no harm in it. I agree with him. Who cares. It's only entertainment. I don't think it should be taken so seriously.

Actually, I feel it is rather hypocritical of the NFL to fine players for these antics. You know that behind closed doors the powers that be of the NFL love it because it sells tickets and merchandise. Then they put out a press release stating the player was fined and the money will go to charity. Therefore the big whigs are able to line their pockets from the extra publicity and air time, look like the good guys for donating the fine to charity, and put on an outward appearance that they are totally against such behavior. It's all rather pathetic in my opinion. Entertainment is the name of the game today, and this isn't your Daddy's NFL anymore. Do I like the "Look-at-me" antics? Nope, but when the NFL refuses to allow a player who legally changed his name in a court of law to have that name placed on the back of his jersey due to said player not making the required financial arrangements with the official manufacturer of NFL jerseys for merchandising purposes then they sure look hypocritical to me.

I sure did see him say it was dirty. Randy has always defended his QB's and is not known to be one to use hyperbole often so it must've been dirty. He's never been anything but polite and respectful to his teammates and coaches over the years. He's the kind of guy you want to see your kids grow up to be like.

I am one of the oldest, most conservative football posters on here, and I'm sure not a TO apologist, but I don't see anything wrong with limited post-TD celebrations provided they are not lengthy, taunt the other team, are in good taste, or turn into an individual player tribute session. An NFL game is one of the biggest show-biz venues in the world---so what's wrong with a little more pizzaz by these highly-paid showmen. It adds spice to the game. I remember the days of Billy "White Shoes" Johnson of the Oilers---he became more famous for his scoring dances than for his play---nobody seemed to have a problem with it in those days, so why now? There is a distinct difference between the pro and amateur venues. I do not support post-score celebrations of any kind outside of the NFL.

What I have a big problem with is T.O. costing the team a 15 yard penalty and not showing much concern about it. No big deal in this game but it could be disasterous for the team in a really close game. He knows the rules so it is unforgiveable for him to violate those rules and draw the penalty. He is putting himself above the team when he does that and I can't abide with that kind of thinking. It's hard enough to go through a game without penalties so it makes no sense for him to intentionally draw one. The Cowboys better put a stop to his antics now because he doesn't know where to draw the line. They will get progressively wilder and more borderline with every game.

I agree with you, Farmersfan----costing your team 15yds is over the line, and TO was probably reminded of that. The NFL needs to amend the celebration rule to "excessive celebration" and clearly define the definition of "excessive".

Mark Gastineau was a great defensive end for the New York Jets in the 80s and he was famous for doing a sack dance when he sacked a qb. The NFL stopped him and I thought it was a shame. It added personality to the game. If teams didn't like it then tell their Offensive Linemen to block him and protect their QB.

Actually he and Wade were not aware that if your hand touches the ground it's considered excessive. Certainly, they should have known that part of the rule, but I think the league is being too rigid on this. It's entertainment for goodness sake.

So if he'd done back flips all the way down the length of the endzone, he would have been okay as long as his hands didn't touch the ground???

What respect do you mean JR... as long as the NFL has been in existance there have ben celebrations. You pick an era and they celebrated scoring touchdowns., I agree it has gotten more and more over the top but as long as humans play the game they will celebrated.

BILLYFRED0000
09-08-2008, 04:27 PM
I think it is a bs call and a bs rule. The original issue was for using props as in cell phones and other paraphanelia in the endzone which could include the goalpost or pylons. But the ground is the endzone and not in the endzone. Strict interpretation could suggest that jumping up and down in the endzone is excessive because you are using the ground as a prop.

You must be confusing high school football and college football. College football may not have the entertainment value of NFL, but it does have some corruptness in it. High school, junior high, even peewee leagues are football in it's truest and purest form.

If it were real football the dbs could tee off on receivers anywhere on the field, the qb could get smoked in the pocket, and the qb cant throw the ball away...etc

All good ones.

Trivia: who is credited by NFL Network, ESPN, Dan Patrick, & all other credible sources for having invented the end zone dance? NFL Network even refers to a pavilion they have dubbed in his honor when showing celebrations.
.................................................. ............................................

Answer: Sweeny High School's WR Elmo Wright (key member of 1966 State Champion in 1st year of school integration)

Started dancing in end zone in late '60s for Bill Yeoman's Houston Cougars.

Played professionally for Chiefs, Oilers, etc. too before knee injuries cut short career. Great bloodlines in that family too (such as nephew & former UT All-American DT Rod Wright, etc.).
