UIL requires 5 days between games so could move games up. I think UIL waived the days a few years ago for multiple rainouts across the state...it could be interesting. If you have to evacuate on Thursday, how do you get the games in AND evacuate? Would any teams play on Wednesday? In our part of the country, Wednesdays are an absolute no.

in Extreme Southeast Texas, teams couldn't play Wednesday, because most ALL teams played Saturday due to Gustav evacuations. Seems like evacuations every other weekend are in order, lol.

I called Lil44 a while ago - he's been in Cuero for numerous Hurricanes but never in Corpus during one. He lives on Ocean Drive near Airline (on the 1st floor) You can see the water from his from door. I told him that he and his roommate need to listen to the weather forecasts and Hurricane updates seriously. He gets out of class about 1:30 on Thurs and doesn't have class on Friday so my preference would be for him to head to Cuero as soon as he gets out of class Thurs, but he works at a golf course, so I am assuming they'll need all available warm bodies to help secure golf course equipment etc. How do the non-esseitial businesses handle hurricanes and evacuations in the CC area? I told him to fill up with gas TONIGHT - get at least $100 cash and get plenty of water just in case he gets "stuck" down there (planning for the worst, hoping for the best)

how soon do the outer bands start hitting landfall (before the "eye" makes landfall) Depends on how big the storm is and how fast it moves. Outer bands will start comin in 4-5 hours before the eye. Good thing about this storm last I checked is the hurricane force winds only stretch out 60 miles from the eye so that's a good thing.

Useful Info......(paraphrased from the Victoria Advocate)

When hurricanes reach a certain latitude and longitude point in the Gulf of Mexico, insurance companies are unable to write new coverage plans or up pre-existing ones, said Cody Edwards, the insurance company’s agent/owner.

That applies to homeowners, flood and auto insurance, he said.

“Once it passes that, it’s a done deal,” Edwards said.

But an approaching storm doesn’t have to mean disaster, he said. Being prepared can make a big difference.

Is a storm brewing? Make sure you’re ready for it, insurance-wise:

Keep an inventory of your belongings and e-mail it to yourself. Take photos or videotape of each room and the exterior of your home to keep with your inventory.

Gather important documents. Unless they are stored in a safe place, take insurance cards, insurance policies and an inventory of your possessions with you.

Know what your insurance policies cover. Make certain your homeowners or commercial property coverage is still in force and that it provides adequate coverage to pay the full replacement cost of your property. Check your auto policy to see if you have comprehensive coverage, which pays if a storm, fire or flood damages your car. Find out how much coverage you have for "additional living expenses" to cover lodging, food and other expenses if forced to vacate.

Review your health coverage. Find out if you'll be able to receive non-emergency care from out-of-network providers without accruing additional out-of-pocket costs.

Consider renters insurance if you don't have it. You may need it to protect your belongings.

Consider alternative storing methods for company files. Important documents can be scanned and stored in a safe location. Also, take photos of office equipment and furniture.

At my place of work, we are having meetings to prepare for Ike, doesn't look like as of this morning that it's going away. I am hoping that the worst we'll get is just water. But even that is probably not good, the ground is so saturated that any water will be a big threat for some serious flooding. :(

This will almost for sure, going to cancel some big games or most if not all games in the RGV this Friday.

This thing is now headed northwest. Sustained winds of 100mph. Hurricane force winds extending out 80 MILES!! Tropical storm winds up to 205 miles from center! This means for me....pretty much no matter where it hits along the coast...we're gonna get nasty weather. Closer to Corpus, the less, but if it hits closer to Matagorda Bay, we're hosed at the StangFan house. We're on Hwy 36 between West Columbia and Needville which would put us on that right front (dirty) corner. YIKES!

Just got off the phone with Lil44 - he got out of class (in Corpus) about 3:15 and is packing and heading home. He has NO CLUE about the traffic situation he's about to run into. I sure hope he's leaving early enough to avoid the brunt of the traffic. I don't recall Cuero EVER having a mandatory evacuation. Maybe we have and I just didn't know it. We're electing to stay in our house - I guess we'll see how things go and if it looks as bad as predicted we might "bug out" to my brothers in Seguin, but I'd rather stay here. We have a 130 pound lab that will be with us so it would be ALOT easier to stay here. I hope we're making the right decision. Prayers to all involved. I've not been nervous about a storm in a long time - this one makes me nervous!

I read that somewhere too - he'll probably try to come thru Bayside - he'll probably have holy heck trying to cross St Hwy 35 there in Gregory...... I just hope and pray he's patient - scary times indeed. I keep reminding myself he lived in Austin for a year and survived that traffic so he should be just fine ;)

I wish I could stay, but I just don't want to take that risk. Yall be careful. What I'm most worried about is staying and then having to leave "all of a sudden" and running into MAJOR traffic issues. I do not have the patience to sit in traffic! I remember having to do that with Hurricane Allen and it was awful! UGH!

Then having to deal with 3 dogs in traffic...no THANK YOU! :D

I hear you about being nervous. :(

Take care!

well, Lil44 got home safe and sound. Not too bad a drive, guess he left before the majority evacuations started, neverthesless, I am happy he got home without incident. I hope and pray everyone else who is traveling, has as safe and incident-free drive as he did!

Looks like Ike has changed his course yet AGAIN - of course, we have 48 hours more for him to change from this course to that course. Regardless of what path Ike decides to take, whether it is going into Gaveston, Bay City, Port OConnor or Corpus, I don't fault the city officials in the Cuero area to do the mandatory evacuation. I'd much rather be safe than sorry. What concerns me is, the majority of us have been to 2 or 3 "false alarm" (THANK GOD FOR THAT) evacuations or suggested evacs anyway - I am scared that folks will become complacent and not heed the warning next time and it could be "the big one".

I look at it this way, we got the 3rd "stall" of the garage cleaned out, cleaned out the freezers and got all the big ice chest all cleaned out AND an unexpected 4 day weekend....... It will be interesting to see which path Ike decides to take - whichever path it is, I hope and pray it is a path that will cause the least amount of property damage and no lives are in risk........... :)

I'm worried the levee isn't tall enough.

Can it keep back a 20ft surge?

If it can't, how far inland does that water go.

My house is in the highest location of my entire neighborhood. It should be safe. But right across the road is some really low lying land. I'm worried for those people.

It's getting dark in Houston. The wind is starting to blow.

A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall. It had been breezy and sunny until about 30 mins ago. It got darker, wind picked up and drizzled a little bit, then stopped. That's all we've gotten so far. This morning was beautiful. You would never have known there was a big storm coming.

A 20 ft surge can bring a lot of water a long way inland. The problem is where it makes landfall. The most extreme winds with a hurricane are with the northeast quadrant, commonly referred to as the "nasty side." That is where the strongest winds and surge will be. With a storm still a possible 12 hours from landfall and already kicking up waves this high it doesn't look good. Also on the northeast side you have to start to worry about tornadoes where low level wind shear is strong. Although tornadoes are typically weak with tropical systems, one this big can put down a bunch of tornadoes on the nasty side.

Mr44 and I were talking about that this afternoon while watching all the newsclips........... I read a story (but I dont' remember where it was) that was an account of the day before and day of the 1900 hurricane -- they had very little warning and no clue to the severity of the storm....... also - can you imagine the flooding that would have been mid afternoon without the 18 foot seawall which wasn't there in 1900? God bless those brave men and women in the service force (police, sheriff dept, EMS, power companies, doctors, nurses, Red Cross, food banks, shelter workers) there are so many people risking their own lives to help others.

Hey there! We decided to stay. I woke up Thursday morning and since my only evacuation plan was to Leander, I thought what the heck? I was more worried about the bad weather hitting Austin and me being able to get back quickly for work reasons.

Lorey, thank you for the invite to stay in Cuero...I was seriously considering it. We are boarded up and still waiting for a drop of rain. But seriously, it is always better to be safe than sorry. My fridge/freezer is full of food...I think I must shop when I panic or something.;)

My thoughts are with you guys in the path of the storm...I hope that each of you stay safe, as do your family and friends! I am still glued to the Weather Channel and will keep everyone in my thoughts and prayers! :)

My place had no damage but also no power. I'm at my office now which is on generator power.

Lots of downed/broken trees in this area with some sign damage. No major structural damage that I've seen. Some creeks are way out of banks but not over the road.

Lost all the shingles on one side of my house. Led to the sheetrock in my dining room ceiling falling to the ground. I hope I can file this on my homeowners. Still no power since 4am and theprospects don.t sound good. I.ll have to empty the fridge tomorrow. Will get a few pics when I get power back.

It's almost 9Pm on Sunday night and I STILL don't have power. My early estimate is about 10K dollars damage to my house - the roof making up the bulk of that.

I hope you get power back soon - kinda hard to start doing any "fixing up" without power - I don't want to make any assumptions on your coverage under your homeowners (they've changed so many of the forms and it just depends on what coverage you have) but if the shingles were blown off or damaged and that is the proximate cause of the interior damage, it should be covered. PM me if you want..... Do you have just Homeowners or a TWIA policy as well?PS save ALL RECEIPTS if nothing else, you might have enough out of pocket expense to take a loss on your income tax..... (there is a forumla used but it's worth the trouble to save lists) it's called "unreimbursed catastropic loss" something like that

Lil44's girlfriend said their house (League City area, she goes to Clear Creek HS) seems to be structurally ok (at first glance) but the chimney is gone as well as the wooden/privacy fence but those a MINOR details. She said some interior walls on the 2nd floor showed water damage - maybe just from the force of the water being blown in- cause the roof seemed to be intact. They were told not to expect power for 5 days. No school all this week and they'll make a decision about the following week. 1 Elem school lost the entire roof and another was full of water. They are mostly newer schools with all kinds of security stuff, so without power - no one can enter cause the keycode pads aren't working - I am sure they can get that by-passed soon.
They are staying in Alvin at her grandmother's right now (no power either) she said earlier today a little alligator was in one of the drainage ditches in the neighborhood....... yikes..........

Been a little scary around Bridge City - I'm just now getting around to being back to normal, so I thought I would give you guys a little UPDATE......

Ike was ony listed as a CAT I / CAT II storm, but it's huge windfield created a storm surge reported by our local media as a CAT IV surge. All of Bolivar peninsula (east of Galveston Bay) is more or less GONE! The cities of High Island and Sabine Pass are still more or less inacessible, so there is not yet record of their damage. COntinuing east, the cities of Port Arthur, Nederland, Port Neches, Groves, and Port Acres were protected by their sea wall, which held off the storm surge. the cities of Bridge City, West Orange, and Orange were not so lucky.....

90% of the homes in Bridge City went under from 2' - 8' of water, all from storm surge. Those homes that were close to the marsh and Lake Sabine were battered by waves, so that all of the walls were "washed out", leaving total destruction. My typed words just can't describe the damage, so I'm posting the following links to photos and videos.

http://kogt.smugmug.com/gallery/5953607_Nn2hu#371134406_jLgnE (Orange, West Orange, and Bridge City - 101 photos)

http://www.orangeleader.com/ (Orange, West Orange, and Bridge City - photos on the front page)

http://www.kfdm.com/ (videos of the area, location as stated in the video title)

Take a moment to view these photos and videos. I have heard unconfirmed rumor of 25 dead in Bridge City alone, I CAN NOT confirm that. But let me PLEAD with each of you that read this - If ever faced with the decision of whether or not to evacuate, GO! GO! GO! There were several reports on TV last week on people who said they wouldn't leave for Ike, because we just left for Gustav 2 weeks ago for nothing, and they could not afford to leave again. After hearing of over 350 rescues of people climbing into their attics to survive, I will plead again - LEAVE! GO! GET OUT!

My family and I left Thursday morning. We went to Hot Springs Arkansas with several other families, and planned to stay until the local weather reported stated that once the warm, moist air from Ike reached the elevation of the area, it would rise, and created severe flooding thunderstorms producing up to 12" of rain and tornados. That was enough to make us leave, so we are now near Monroe, La. We will wait until the area is opened and the mandatory evacuation is lifted to return.

My brother-in-law confirmed for us this afternoon we DID NOT get water in our home. God has been very good to me and my family, from Rita to Ike, and in all aspects of my life, and I will not forget that!

The West Orange area also recieved some severe flooding, but since that is not my home town, I can not relate just how many homes were flooded. Orangefield, just 3 miles North of the Bridge City citylimits, received very little damage, from all accounts that I am aware of.

Please keep our AAA friends and our AAA towns of Bridge City and West Orange in your thoughts and prayers. Our students lives have been changed forever.

I am 90% sure Old Cardinal got water, and if I remember where ExBCCards76Mom lives, she got water as well. In fact, there are only about 40 or so homes in Bridge City "proper" that DID NOT get water that I know of right now.

This is one of those events that will forever change our town. Never before, it its' history, have we been hit by storm surge. But to be honest, if Rita had been 40 miles west of its' landfall location in 2005, we would have been gone 3 years ago...........

Thanks for the thoughts and wishes for me and family. It is appreciated! But PLEASE don't forget the unnamed whose lives are forever changed.

ditto on the sleeping. Unfortunately it's a little stressful sleeping with all the windows open. You feel like you need to be at the ready to defend the household.

That's the one. It looks like they won't be having shows there for awhile...at least not with covered seating LOL...

On a somewhat related note, my power is back on as of an hour ago. The humming of the ceiling fan woke me up. I guess I had gotten used to not hearing it. :D

I think we got power within 4 hours of each other. Mine came back on around 6 or 7 last night. The gas lines are insane but it's slowly getting a little bit better. My kids are out of school the rest of the week. Here's some video of the tail end of Ike taken saturday around 9AM. This was VERY mild compared to what I saw between 4AM and 6AM but the video did not really turn out. LOL at the shingles and me thinking they all came from my neighbors - they were mine.

Here's a few pics of some of the damage to my house.

I think the floor was saved, but what happens if I find out 3 months from now some moisture got underneath the wood and the floor starts to buckle.
