ESPN radio is reporting that he has passed away from cancer.

Man I didn't even know he was sick...

He was from my neck of the woods. Prayers to his family.:(

Strange that he died at age 63....that was his jersey number.

He was also a great offensive lineman at Texas A&I University at Kingsville and then he went on to a great 13 year NFL career at Oakland and was on their first super bowl winning team.

When I got to A&I he had already gone into pro football but I did have a class with his younger brother (I don't recall his name). He wasn't as big as Gene and I don't think he was in athletics but he was an intelligent young man. It was during a summer school fresman English class. I don't know what ever happened to him but I hope he did ok in life. He would be about 60 now.

"Upshaw died Wednesday night at his home in Lake Tahoe, Calif., of pancreatic cancer, which was diagnosed only last Sunday, the NFL Players Association said Thursday."
