1989 Semi's

Mexia 7
Needville 6

From what I read, both teams were STACKED. Needville lead the entire game 6-0. They had an all state kicker, if I'm not mistaken who missed 2 FG's and an EP. They lead in penetrations, total offense, first downs, ---- basically every category.

Mexia would go on to score a touchdown on a busted play where the DT hit the RB at the time of the handoff. The qb kept the ball, rolled out and scored. The Jays left this game 1 point short of a state championship. From what I hear, Needville SHOULD have won this game, but they left it on the field and Mexia went on to win the title the next game I believe.

Here is a great question... I love this...You ready?

Does the best team always win?

For WOS this is an easy one as well..

1988 4A State Finals

#4 ranked WO-S 13
Unranked Paris 31

Broke a 15 game playoff game winning streak and prevented 3 consecutive state titles.

This coming after beating the #2 ranked team in the state the week before in Kerrville Tivy and going in to the game as HEAVY favorites

I know a guy who saw that Mexia team several times that year. He said Mexia had one of the best 3A defenses he had ever watched. He said it was as good as the one Gatesville had when they won their state title in 2000 (They gave up 95 points for the season and 24 came against Robinson in a rematch of a regular season game) and that's pretty high praise because that defense was just ridiculously good. Comparing them favorably to Gatesville's 2000 team means to me that Mexia had one heck of a team back in 89.

They held Needville to only 6 points after they had dominated offensively m ost of their opponents, with the exception of maybe bishop, and Sweeny in the reg season. Willy Wilkerson had amazing speed. (Uncle of Ex- Needville RB Thadeus Wilkerson)

TLE and Robinson?

Robinson tied TLE at the end of the game. The Robinson coach asked the kids if they wanted to try for the tie or go for the win, and they opted to go for the win. However, they tried a fake extra point attempt and got stopped cold.

1988 Marshall vs Dallas Carter Quarterfinal

Marshall was 12-0 ranked in top 10 in nation..Carter was 12-0 ranked top ten in nation

It was one of those classic games, back and forth..Marshall moved the ball well agianst the vaunted Carter D..Carter's O was not really spectacular..but effective...

Marshall was up when Carter scores a TD with less than 30 seconds left and wins the game 22-18

My all time most dissapointing loss had to be my last game. We lost to Gainsville in the 3rd round of the 4A playoffs in Amon Carter Stadium. We had a TD called back because the refs said we had a lineman downfield. If a lineman would have actually been over the LOS it would have been dissapointing enough, but the film didn't show it. We had started the year as the #1 team in 4A too.

Butt kickings aren't usually disappointing, those are easier to take when you know the other team was just better.

For Vernon I'd think it was the loss to SLC in that famous game at pennington in 1993 I think...what a game

For me it was Everman-Hebron in the 2005 Round of 16 at Texas Stadium...Hebron went up 19-8 in the first half but we scored two defensive touchdowns to take a 23-19 lead despite being without QB Maurice Moore who is now at Wisconsin for the 2nd and 3rd qtrs..

Hebron scored to make it 26-23 early in the 4th..with Moore back in the game EHS made a late drive to possibly kick a tying FG but Moore threw an INT into the end zone and the game ended...Hebron rolled to a state championship that year which Everman could have easily won

24-21 Score....

with about 3 minutes left we force a 3 and out.

so we have a 40 yard drive and are at the 25 or so. During that drive we were just pounding the ball on the ground averaging about 7 or 8 yards a carry then our bright coach decides to call a dumbass pass play with 2 minutes left and it's intercepted on the 2 yard line.....sad and pathetic

Well we don't have too much playoff experience over the past three decades of UIL competition so I can only come up with two losses that were disappointing and one is a regular season game.

2004: We lost 21-20 to Lincoln in the South Dallas Super Bowl. The year before Lincoln beat us 69-0 and we had the lead almost the entire game in 2004 before losing it late. That Lincoln team went on to lose in the 4A state title game in OT to Kilgore.

2005: The loss to Tatum in the regional-semis 28-19. Really the only playoff loss we've had that could be categorized as a disappointment. Our offense handed that game away. I think we had 7 turnovers and most were just ridiculous. We actually pulled our QB from the game and just started running some direct snaps to McNeal to stop the parade of INT's. Our defense played probably its best game of the season and held the state champions to 164 yards (Only 14 yards were gained by someone not named Lennon Creer).

It was 21-13 with around 3 minutes left when we hit a hook and ladder for a 70 yard TD. The 2 point failed as did the onside kick. We brought the house on the next play to try to force a TO, but Creer got through the line and scored to put the game away. That was probably the best team we've ever had since joining the UIL in 1976 and will probably remain the team that had the best shot at a state title for many, many years to come.
