3A, 2A
No. 1 Celina
COACH: Butch Ford
2007 RECORD: 16-0
RETURNING STARTERS: 4 offense; 4 defense
STRENGTHS: Celina returns only 12 lettermen – the fewest in quite some time – but it has a wealth of experience. Senior running backs Charley Waldrep and Troy McCartney combined for more than 5,000 rushing yards the last two seasons. Sophomore running back Jose Romero had 927 total yards last season. Junior middle linebacker Caleb Lavey has logged 218 tackles since his freshman season. Ford is 81-5 in his first six seasons.
NOTABLE: Senior TE/DE Andy James is the son of former SMU star Craig James.
2. Madison
COACH: Ronald Johnson
2007 RECORD: 6-4
RETURNING STARTERS: 9 offense; 9 defense
STRENGTHS: Experience and speed – headed by the dangerous running back tandem of junior Reginald Peagram (763 yards, 5 TDs) and senior Vernon Hunt (698 yards, 12 TDs) – make Madison a viable candidate for a long playoff run.
NOTABLE: Two of Madison's wins last season came by forfeit (Lincoln and Roosevelt).
3. Farmersville
COACH: Ross Dodson
2007 RECORD: 13-2
RETURNING STARTERS: 6 offense; 2 defense
STRENGTHS: Last year's Class 2A Division I champions make the move to 3A with a solid junior class led by QB Austin Brooks (65-117-2, 1,345 yards, 11 TDs) and C Michael Thompson (6-3, 285).
NOTABLE: Farmersville lost in the bi-district round in its two previous playoff trips as a 3A team (1996, Frisco; 1993, Commerce).
4. Prosper
COACH: Kent Scott
2007 RECORD: 8-4
RETURNING STARTERS: 6 offense; 5 defense
STRENGTHS: QB Hunter Nix is a two-way threat (2,432 passing yards, 783 rushing yards). Suburban growth is filling up the roster as third-year coach Kent Scott says his team's depth has never been better.
NOTABLE: Prosper looks to extend its playoff streak to seven years. Before that, it had made the playoffs just twice (1973 and 1979).
5. Argyle
COACH: Todd Rodgers
2007 RECORD: 10-3
RETURNING STARTERS: 6 offense; 5 defense
STRENGTHS: WR Brady Brown, a state Top 100 recruit, might give Argyle the advantage it needs to do battle with Celina. Brown had 97 receptions for 1,007 yards and 12 TDs in 2007.
NOTABLE: Argyle has qualified for the playoffs in four of its six seasons.
6. Kaufman
COACH: Todd York
2007 RECORD: 8-3
RETURNING STARTERS: 5 offense; 6 defense
STRENGTHS: Kaufman builds off a solid foundation with five third-year starters – led by C/DE Brett Brewer, who earned first-team all-district honors both ways last year.
NOTABLE: Kaufman lost to Brownsboro in bi-district the last two seasons.
7. Pilot Point
COACH: Blake Feldt
2007 RECORD: 6-4
RETURNING STARTERS: 5 offense; 5 defense
STRENGTHS: Pilot Point's drop to Class 2A has the local faithful dreaming of the G.A. Moore glory years. Hard-nosed senior RB Cooper Guthrie, a starter since his freshman season, gives the team valuable leadership.
NOTABLE: Pilot Point's last losing season was in 1976 (1-9).
8. Roosevelt
COACH: Joseph Daniels
2007 RECORD: 8-5
RETURNING STARTERS: 5 offense; 3 defense
STRENGTHS: RB Kevin Booker (180-1,106 yards, 12 TDs) gets a chance to become a featured back now that QB Vincent McNeil has graduated.
NOTABLE: Roosevelt competed at the 5A level as recently as 1989. It has been a 3A school since 2004.
9. Kennedale
COACH: Richard Barnett
2007 RECORD: 7-4
RETURNING STARTERS: 4 offense; 6 defense
STRENGTHS: Kennedale will rely on speed to compensate for its lack of size and experience. The team's biggest strength is on the lines with the return of C Michael Charron, G Cody Ostrout and DE Steven Sanders.
NOTABLE: Kennedale has had eight consecutive winning seasons.
10. Melissa
COACH: Ronny Williams
2007 RECORD: 9-4
