The searing heat and the approach of Tropical Storm Edouard had little effect on the Navasota Rattlers as they began two-a-day workouts Monday in Day One of their quest to mount another run at the state Class 3A football title.
The Rattlers will see their first scrimmage action at 11 a.m. Aug. 16 in against Marlin in Mart. They were scheduled to face Brookshire Royal that date, but according to head coach Lee Fedora, because the new coaching staff at Brookshire had not been made aware of the date with Navasota, the opponent had to be changed at the last minute.
Fedora said he has a few concerns he’ll be addressing during that first contact meeting.
“Going into it, we have high expectations,” said Fedora. “You’ve got guys who have been starters for you, and we’ve got to find some depth. We’ve got great numbers. We’re guessing we’re going to have between 135 and 150 (players) out, which for Class 3A is phenomenal. When I go into a scrimmage, I want to make sure we’re getting better each day. That scrimmage is kind of that week-and-a-half of practice to see where you’re at. The biggest thing is get out healthy.”
He also notes that after more than a week of hitting on one another, having another uniform to hit somewhat eases the pain of practice.
“Facing somebody like Marlin — they’ve been 3-A for a long time and dropped back to 2-A — they have a lot of speed, so we’re going to see some of that action.”
The Rattlers’ coaching staff takes the freshman squad through a one-a-day practice from 1 to 3 p.m. weekdays. Then the JV and varsity come in and go through inside work such as skull practice and weight workouts, then go out for two hours, take an hour break, then go back for another two hours.
Navasota’s second scrimmage will be here on Thursday, Aug. 21 at 6:15 p.m. against the Blackcats of Mexia. The season will open Thursday, Aug. 28 against the Henderson Lions in Lufkin at 7 p.m.
After that, the Rattlers have three 7:30 p.m. home games against Palestine, Hearne and Bellville.
The Bellville game has been tentatively scheduled as the Texas Dairy Queen Game of the Week, to be televised at a time not yet determined.
