Which teams were left scratching their heads after realignment was announced on Friday and which teams were celebrating better days ahead.

East Texas Realignment Winners and Losers

Winners

Longview:This one of the easier picks, not only does Longview get out of a tough district with the Tyler ISD schools and Mesquite but they also drop to 4A. Longview could be downright scary in 4A with their talent and depth which will be plentiful at the 4A level.

Whitehouse:Whitehouse gets 14-4A with many of their old bunkmates, however they lose Marshall and an up and coming Longview Pine Tree squad. Most importantly Whitehouse also avoids Longview in district play. I’d say that’s a win!

Paris and Paris North Lamar:A huge win in NE Texas, even though they’ll be classified in a DFW district both Paris schools will be factors in Class 3A. They were both little guys in 4A and now with superior talent and depth they should have little trouble in District 10-3A.

District 16-3A:Now with six teams in the NE corner of the state in 3A, it’ll be much easier for those teams to only now have to schedule 5 non-district games instead of six. Also with no 15-3A the playoff teams from this loop will get a free ride to the area round. Atlanta, Texarkana Pleasant Grove, Texarkana Liberty-Eylau, Pittsburg, New Boston and Mount Vernon make the district up.

Crockett:This is a huge win for Crockett, as the Bulldogs stay in 20-3A but they lose Carthage, Diboll, Rusk and potentially Jasper and instead they pick up Palestine and Athens. Crockett is the instant favorite in the new 20-3A.

Elysian Fields:It’s not so much what happened to Elysian Fields themselves but simply losing Tatum back to 3A is big for the Yellow Jackets who are now undisputed kings of Class 2A in East Texas.

Losers

Sulphur Springs:Maybe not a bigger loser in East Texas than Sulphur Springs who got out of Texas High’s stranglehold in the I-30 district but not only does SSHS have what should be a stout Texas High team in 13-4A, but they’ve picked up Longview and Marshall! It’ll be tough for the Wildcats this year.

Tatum:Another big loser is Tatum, the Eagles who likely will take a step back in 2008 after 3 straight trips to the State Championship game with two state titles also will have to adjust to moving back to Class 3A. THS also moves into a tougher Region 3 in Class 3A and they are sharing a district with Gilmer and Tyler Chapel Hill.

Athens:Athens has been better at the 3A level but they haven’t had major success as of yet. The new 20-3A won’t be friendly to the Hornets as they pick up solid teams in Crockett and Palestine and a much improved Palestine Westwood along with a Brownsboro bunch that won’t be down for long either.
