WINNERS

Odessa Permian:MOJO is without a doubt back, and a district title is a pretty good bet for the Panthers in 2008 as Permian loses their top competition in Abilene High who has moved into a DFW district. The new District 2-5A just doesn’t have the same luster without the Abilene schools.

Abilene Cooper:One of two District 4-4A schools considered “winners.” The Cougars did drop out of Class 5A, but they’ll find 4A to their liking. Although the new digs aren’t as easy as one might think, being on an even playing field will make a huge difference across the board.

Big Spring:Many realignment projections had the Steers heading as far east as Aledo!! The fact the Steers stayed in West Texas is a win in and of itself. 4-4A is also going to be better for Big Spring than having to go east and play Stephenville, Aledo, and Granbury.

Lubbock Estacado:Estacado revived their football program last year with a trip to the Regional Semi-Finals in Class 4A and now that they’ve dropped to 3A hopes are high. District 1-3A isn’t too daunting either as Pampa stayed 4A and Canyon went up to Class 4A. Estacado also turns into an instant favorite to win state in Class 3A hoops also. The only damper is having to play District 2-3A in non-district.

Brownwood:The Lions escape the brutal CenTex District 16-4A, but did they really escape as 2-3A has been dubbed the new “Little SWC.” However playing schools your own size can be nothing but good for the Lions and I’d still take my chances with Abilene Wylie and Sweetwater over Waco and Copperas Cove.

Andrews:They aren’t being mentioned as a winner but the Mustangs not only avoided the power district in 2-3A, but their placement in 3-3A means they’ll avoid that loop in bi-district.

LOSERS

San Angelo Central: Yeah they did pick up more local games in the Midland-Odessa schools , but Central is still fighting an uphill battle literally and figuratively. 2-5A won’t be easy for the Bobcats.

Pampa:Pampa was on the border for 3A/4A much like Canyon but the Harvesters would have benefited from the drop more more than 3-4A rival Canyon. Pampa may finally drop in two more years but they’ll have a tough time competing with schools close to twice their size.

Hereford:Was there any question the Whitefaces were the biggest loser in West Texas?? Not only did Hereford get placed in a MUCH tougher district with Frenship and Abilene Cooper, but they have a 300 mile road trip to San Angelo!!! Ouch, HHS has appealed but it’s doubtful they win.

Snyder:Snyder has emerged as a powerhouse in West Texas advancing to the State Semi-Finals two of the past four seasons including a trip last year. However graduating the house and getting placed in the state’s most brutal districts with Brownwood, Graham, Sweetwater and Abilene Wylie won’t help the Tigers much.

Breckenridge:The Buckaroos are in the same boat as Snyder expect they don’t have the recent success that Snyder has. Earmark them for two sixth place finishes.

'Bout time someone finds an article that doesn't pick Snyder as one of the top 3 teams in the district.
