So, I need to buy one and have no clue what to look for. All I would need it for is to back up word docs. I don't guess I would need a lot of space for that, but I am totally clueless when it comes to this stuff. :vrycnfsd:

Does me having Vista require any special kind brand or does that part not matter?

I've been searching online and there are too many options! *sigh*

Will someone give me some pointers on what to look for? :D Pretty please? :) Thanks!

Hey rita, Almost anything will do in a pinch. Drives are inexpensive. I always recommend spend a little more and do not go for the bargain. But I have not followed the external market much and do not really have any other info for you. I have old stuff that still works nothing in the last couple of years.

Why don't you just save them to a USB? They are cheap and can hold an unbelievable amount Fry's here in Houston has 2 Gb memory for about $20.

My boss has something attached to her computer that backs up to the external contraption automatically!

That is my problem, just not remembering to do it myself!!

I think I already have one of those flash USB thingys. LOL.

I should have been backing up my work as my boss stressed to me this morning, but I wasn't so now I need/want something to help me do that! Kellye what your boss has sounds like something I'd love! haha

I just email as attachments files I may need out to my yahoo account! :D

The best part it is free, and even if my whole house burns down, I should be able to retrieve my data! :)

But your boss may not like free. ;)

Jason, enlighten a technologically challenged codger. Why not just use a USB flash drive instead of the hard drive you recommend? Are flash drives unstable? I know you could lose one, but why not just leave it connected to the port. Pardon my ignorance.

I've been doing the same with pictures and "important" emails...... like being able to access what "where ever" I am.....

The hard drive is portable. I have a 320gb external hard drive and I can take it anywhere with me. The entire thing is full of movies, TV shows, and music, and I can take it anywhere with me. It's convenient and a reliable backup that you can use on any computer. The utility on one is very great.

for example - this is a 16gb flash drive for $380 and the one i showed earlier is a 250gb external hard drive for $130...

So it is just size? Thanks for the information and glad to see I wasn't too far off if size is the only real difference.

It comes down to portability needs. Most business backups are interested in size not portability. Also, security is an issue. 16 gig is not that much storage. The average small business could easily need 100 gig for email and document storage.

It's just me & my boss in our office! LOL. 100% of the word docs get done on my computer. If I'm not here to type something up it doesn't get done. I like the portability in case I'm ever sick and need to stay home and he needs something he can always bring the office to me! :)

My main goal would be the something that updates automatically, like at midnight or something!

Do any of the above do that???

I won't remember to do it myself!

I don't think the one jason suggested does that, but I ordered it anyway. The price was right and that's what I wanted anyway. Someone to just tell me "here buy this" :D

I've already ordered it. It should be here Friday or Saturday.

I also ordered & have downloaded Microsoft Office. I feel much better! :nerd:

sure it does, all you need to have done is have a small script written and use it in the Windows Scheduler to automatically run said script nightly, or just purchase some auto backup software, such as Veritas.

this is fine for the home user

http://www.documentbackup.com/

we use EMC Retrospect on my servers here at TSU - it is good at the corporate level, but unnecessary (and probably too expensive) for what you need it for...

You can get a 16gb for under $100, it isn't 2004

If you had a fire in your office and you had your backup in the office, would it be devastating? If so then you need to do a little more research. Like contacting Jason and having a more in depth discussion. Just food for thought!

You can get a 500GB MYBook for a little over a 100.00. It comes with backup software and a one button push to backup files. 360GB sounds like a lot but I filled one up with just music in less than 6 months.
