I have never claimed to have a lot of football knowledge, I DO know I have a heck of a lot more than I did when I joined this board 6 years ago.
I came here to LEARN what I could, and don't appreciate some male chauvinist talking down to me like I am an idiot....which has happened from time to time.
That being said, I have probably learned from LH Panther Mom more than anyone, she was raised around football, has had several of her boys play (and play well), so she knows what she is talking about.
She also doesn't make me feel stupid when I ask her a question!!
I am certain you "moms" on here can teach some "dads" on here a few things based upon some of the posts I have read. I think it great y'all aren't afraid to mix it up with the arm chair QB's.

Most know that I'm from Caldwell, a small 3 A school that isn't in the limelight or considered a powerhouse or often ranked. We are in our 3rd year of running the Slot T....which in Slot T time means we are still infants with the program. It takes years to instill and get it to the status of Liberty Hill. Our program doesn't look like LH's because we're not there yet...but we're working on it. The Liberty Hill Coaching staff has graciously welcomed our coaching staff and helped guide us through the process. Coach Jerry Vance and his staff are heros to me for their williness to share their program so openingly. That began my tie , my bandwagoning for LH. After I joined the board last year, I came to view LH from a different perspect and my respect grew and I now have LH friends and respect the program for what it is and what it has accomplished.
I know more than most women do about football because my husband used to coach, I was raised around football, my son plays football and I happen to like the game of football and all the different schemes. I don't have the knowledge of the guys on the boards but don't claim to. I do ok.
This board is amazing. I find myself learning so much one minute, biting my tongue the next...ok I didn't tonight but I usually do...rolling my eyes at some...trying not to be shocked by some threads...laughing at others and really enjoying all the mix. I'm getting a sense of the personalities of the members and what an amazing mix. One week teams are at odds, the next taking up for each other. Threads are hijacked, prayers requested, support given when needed.
I have no doubt that if Rocket or I needed support or help of any kind, everyone would pitch in. It might be right after a flaming thread and name calling but the support would happen.
Kinda like a family.
And like a family there are going to be times when we are on our best behavior and times when we are at our worst. I apologize for my rudeness tonight as well.
I feel like family with bantering with Rocket, his apology to the moms, Ranger Mom's support of another mom, Orange Machine, BleedOrange, ESPN1 and others coming to the defense of a mom.
Thanks to all...all is good...and we can now go back to whatever it was we were discussing...no wait ...that's what got us here in the first place.

I guess you don't get out that often because Garland ran it successfully at the 5A level for years. Granted the Owls had great athletes running it that other teams didn't have, but it won them many games and they were within an inch of going to OT with Cedar Hill in the state semis in 2006.

So if I understand this right if someone puts in some plays that you havent seen and are successful against you (Brownwood) then it's a gimmick or circus act. Wow that's a pretty PeeWee football mentality. If your all everything coaches and players are so good than you shouldnt have to name call. Its real simple, if it beats you then you werent prepared.

Colby Freeman - 4 Year starter...unbelievable option QB. Would literally run over people. Ran the veer. Could have played linebacker with his size, but his speed was 4.5 40 and weighed about 200-205. Physical.
Deacon Burns - Could run as fast sideways as going forward. Most athletic to ever come out of Brownwood. I saw him juke every player on a team in one play and go to the house. In baseball, he hit the ball to first base and beat the tag, also stole home several times. Currently playing Triple A baseball.
Kirby Freeman - 3 year starter - Excellent arm and developed running game during Jr. Year. Fast and good size. More of a finesse runner and thrower than his brother, Colby. Had 200 yards rushing against Permian in the first Gordon Wood Classic. First play of the game was from the 20 and went to the house on a keeper. Will probably start for Baylor this season. Led Brownwood to the Semi's in 2002.
Casey Pachall - Started as a Soph in 2006. Rough start but by playoff time, was throwing and running like Kirby Freeman. Led Brownwood to the Quarterfinals past Ennis and others. Up and down year in 2007 after getting injured early on and not fully recovering. Looks to set it off in 2008 as The Top QB in 3A.

IMO, if you want to know which team knows better than any what it takes to beat LH, it's Wimberley. Wimberley has defeated LH 3 out of the last 4 years...we know how to beat them. The problem last year (and probably this year) is that we are reloading talent and lacking the atheletes to get it done...not to mention LH has developed into a monster. But our coaches have a system that gives LH fits.
I am well aware that LH is not the team it was when we were beating them 3 years straight (nor are we, obviously), but I think the formula is still the same. Jam the holes, penetrate to disrupt the backfield, blitz, capitalize on turnovers (they will turn it over several times), make it 3rd and long. Nothing considered "rocket science" here.
But the big one is this...just keep their offense off the field. Simple, right? Well, to LH's credit, they know this too. They have greatly improved on D. I give their defensive coaching more of the credit for winning the Ring 2 times more than their offensive coaching. If a team doesnt have long, time consuming drives with TD's on the end of it...they're toast. Quick scoring teams will be worn down.

YOu are right about their D. They have played some stellar d.
IN the 06 finals game we were fourth and 1 3 or 4 times in or close to the red zone and could not get it done. It was a good defensive game from both sides as the final was 22 19 the lowest point totals for both offenses that year. And coming from Celina I can talk about D as i know we have not given up more than 160 points in a season since at least 99. I think we are haning around the 10 points a game average since 99.

Yes, Casey was sitting/standing behind us at the LH/Giddings game, for awhile anyway.
LH defense was right at 14 pts per game last year. Gave up the most points to Cuero, followed by Rockdale.

Why does everybody take offense to gimmick offense? LOL If you do something well that most teams don't do (and the claim that "nobody does it better and you haven't seen this before") what else would you call it?
LH earned their rings. And I retract the circus offense statement. I am hearing reports that LH isn't so much a trick offense or circus act. (just stirring the pot on most of that). Also, misdirections are hard to deal with. It is refreshing to see that a SIMPLE offense can still be effective. The line up and shove it down your throat approach is and always will be the most effective and demoralizing, BUT if you are 1 dimensional, you better know how to execute it. Sounds like LH can do that and has done it.

You are correct Rocket...they are obviously one dimensional, and good at it and proud of it. But one thing I would correct in what you said above...it's not a "simple" offense at all...it's actually very complex, as far as the running game goes.

Well, by simple I mean you aren't going to see alot of sets and you are not going to be thinking pass. This shaves alot of possibilities off of the top. If you know it iis going to be run, this simplifies the possibilities. Now I understand that the types of runs you can have out of this and the misdirections can really get complex. Still, it seems like it would have to be SIMPLE compared to alot of the spreads we run and have seen run. It is not an insult for me to say SIMPLE. I like simple. I like lining up and saying hey, we are about to run the ball, we know you know, and we don't care, stop it.

Rocket, I know you didnt mean it as an insult. The only problem is if your defensive backs are making the majority of the tackles, you're toast. They will wait for this to be the case, then pop up and burn you with a pass to a wide open receiver. Even a horrible passing team can hit a wide open receiver once in a while.
They dont do it often, but again, if its your defensive backs and safety who are making your tackles the majority of the time, watch out.

Brownwood usually has a good D-Line. Usually, quick and very very strong. Line backers usually do well and are very agressive. Like i have said before, I expect them to put points on the board, that is a given, but I expect us to put more on the board. ;)

LH has a quick athletic and slightly undersized offensive line that uses superior technique and quickness to create the seams to give their backs running room. They also get off their blocks well to the second level. A top d line will slow them down but they don't need much of a mistake to make you pay.

I have to say this about Brownwood, by saying that the DB's make most of the tackles, a lot are not far past the line of scrimmage. Kenny Vacarro will come up and stick you. He reminds me alot of D'anton Lynn.

Good point... I have seen Vacarro LIGHT many a RB up...even a few QB's... ha ha But, he is just another D1 recruit..right? Not so fast... He will be Top 3 in the state at the end of the season. He is quick, fast, strong, and LOVES to hit HARD and his instincts are usually right on the money... so let those RB's break free... and get a mouthful of helmet.
I would think you would have to have a quick line with good technique for the pulls and quick developing run plays.
Brownwood will spread you out and make you pay on teh ground and in the air. You give Pachall 10 yards of running room and he'll turn it into 30 easy, possibly the house. Vacarro will be playing alot of RB as well... he he

I'm not sure that Bruce Bush invented the slot t or not. I do know that most if not all of the guys that run it learned it under him. In Texas he is the father of the slot t.

Yep the west texas boys bw included usually are a little cocky. But that's ok. They have had some good teams in the past. Just lately tho LH Celina Tatum SLC to name a few have had the limelight and the best records recently. Although Celina is the only one of that bunch that can go back 50 years and still be in the top 6 in the state in wins and winning percentage.

LH has seen the speed that you have, LH has seen the great QB that you have, LH has seen the great Oline that yall have, and LH has definitly seen the hard-hitters that you have. And LH has beaten them all:) (with an exception of those boys from Wimberley)
The thing that will kill yall is that you have never seen the offense thats going to be thrown at you, yes it is quite simple. We are going to line up in the same darn set every stinkin' time, and we are going to run it right at you every stinkin' time. But 4 days of scout team offense is going to do you no good. That's really what stands out to me, LH has seen and beaten the spread countless times. Brownwood cannot throw anything at us offensively that we probably, and i say probably havent seen already.
Vaccaro and Paschall are bad dudes. and so is your boy going to Baton Rouge. But all that talent has never been enough to beat LH. It takes experience against the Slot T to beat the Slot T. Wimberley is the only team that i've ever seen just completly snuff it out. And they've faced the Slot T every year for 7 years. They had the absolute best defensive schemes to beat the Slot T, other than that no team has really gotten close. And all the Brownwood posters, you can ask the Giddings posters (atleast whats left of them) and you can ask the Celina, Carthage, Navasota and Gilmer posters if i'm lieing. I made quite a few enemies before each of those match ups, but after every one of them, they all came back and said that we told em so. I'm no genius, most everyone on this board knows more about football than i do. Ive just watched Vance and LH run the Slot T from the very start (7 years), heck half the time i call the dang play before they break the huddle..but most importantly ive seen sooo many teams underestimate it just because they know nothing about it... then just get stomped by it come Friday.
So that's where our cockyness comes from:D

Well said Daddy...and you are right about our boys in Wimberley...we know what you are going to do almost every play after 7 years of seeing it...we just are too young at key positions to stop you nowadays, like we were in the early years!!! But that WILL change!!! Probably not this year...but who knows, right? Our D coach is top-notch, so enjoy the upper hand while you can!
As far as Brownwood posters...I dont know anything about their team or their prospects...but i DO suggest they speak softly regarding LH as it makes it easier to chew and swallow those words later on.

LH has no idea about Brownwood. To them we are just another overhyped team that is going to get beat by their offense. They have no respect for us or ours. Shoot, I don't think they have any respect for anybody. They beat everybody. They could play the Dallas Cowboys and beat them too with the Slot T. It's just unstoppable. They could beat any 4A or 5A they played because of that Slot T. Just unstoppable. They have seen the best and beaten them. The overhyped teams and the nobodys. Nobody can beat them, they just hope to keep it respectable. Is this accurate? I mean this is all I am reading...

We as fans may be currently looking ahead at this moment to Liberty Hill cuz of this Joyful little thread, but the fellers down on the field will be focused on taking care of the business at hand....you can write that down too

I am sitting here wondering why people are so against Brownwood. Could it be because of me? 1 Fan who is posting a little smack talk or could it be because Brownwood expects to do well in 3A (we expect to win a state title every season, not sure why this would be any different) or could it be out of fear or could it be it's just the cool thing to do and all of you are a bunch of sheep backing up your 3A Champ against the new 3A that likes their chances alot better in 3A? Who knows.... I truly hope it turns out like Rocky 4, where Rocky was fighting Drago in Russia and all the crowd started cheering for Rocky.. Sweet post Necks...
And to be honest, it is all in fun for me. I always get like this. Have been doing it for years on our board. We have had some nasty battles and some great threads in our 7 year history at BrwnwoodLions.com. Please don't think for 1 second that we don't realize we have alot to prove and most of all we are just excited to be 3A and to have a chance to prove that we are for real. I am of course talking from a fan perspective and don't talk for the team. I also know that Coach Freeman didn't even mention the fact that we did drop when it happened. It is business as usual and that speaks loads of respect for 3A. Brownwood has been working harder than usual to prepare and to get the season started. It is going to be the best season in a long time for us Brownwood fans, no matter what the outcome because we are not just playing teams anymore, we are playing and mixing it up with communities that love their football. This is where the true love for Texas High School Football resides, 3A BABY!

In all honesty, is there anything in the offings about the district spending money to improve the facility? God knows if anybody deserves a better facility, its the kids that have earned it on the field there in LH.

They certainly do. It has not been that long since our upgrade in 02. We needed it. IMHO we could still add some seating on the visitors side.
wimbo_pro
08-01-2008, 11:40 AM
THAT is upgraded??? For the love of football...!! You gotta be kidding! It's not the number of seats available (though it was a bit tight on the home side), its the general condition of the field, facilities and sound system (again, I use the term loosely).

Well, we did add quite a bit to the home side last year, freeing up the smaller "portable" stands for the visitors' side as needed. Unfortunately, I doubt a new stadium will be up for bond election for another year, but probably more like 3-4. Yes, everything is small, from the concession stands, to the seating, to the locker rooms. But it's all we have for now, and you get to know your "neighbors" really well. :D ;) And don't get me started on the sound system. :helpme:

Well, I hope they find the money to do it. Believe me, I understand funds are tough for all school districts, and that if it wasnt for the money it would have already been done. But I gotta feeling that if they had a serious fund raiser, the local supporters could collect a lot that would help out. No better time to do it than when you are reigning State Champs x 2!

Do you even have the space to do it? Or would you have to build it on the existing field? That field would be fine for practice and stuff.

From the talks, when/if, it would go between the HS & JH buildings. To use the existing field, all facilities would have to be ripped out and built from the ground up due to city building code stuff.
wimbo_pro
08-01-2008, 11:57 AM
Yep...I thought so. Well, you know our recent issues with our field and turf ($550k) and that we tried but failed to pass a bond for a new HS since we are busting out of our present facilities...but never were we going to build a new stadium, we were going to have to use the existing one. Then the financial issue (Robin Hood)that made state headlines last year...we know all about the lack of funds and school needs.

Bond elections have not gone over too well in Liberty Hill. Hopefully one day we will get a new stadium. But for the 2008 football season, we will just have to whip your a** with what we got.:stirpot:

In all honesty, is there anything in the offings about the district spending money to improve the facility? God knows if anybody deserves a better facility, its the kids that have earned it on the field there in LH.
Our stadium is not that big! I know it will be a problem for Rocket too. Visitors side is small and with all the fans brownwood brings, I sure Rocket is going to be complaining!:D ;)
See how small it is Rocket!:D

We stopped them better than anybody else in the last two years.
Held them to 22 points. I believe that is the lowest point total LH has had in the last two years. We are probably the only d that can hold them down that I have seen yet. but we did not stop them no. Just kept them from rollin over us.

It's great in the field, but kinda dark in the stands. We can not afford a good light system. Heck it took forever just to get the inflatable Bulldog, once we pay for that then mabe will work on the lights. We have no money RED!:D ;)
P.S. Conrats on the new red endzones. You know they really never look pink, it was those Snyder posters that were saying that!

all i know is that 22-19 is the closest anyone has come in the last two years
good luck to brownwood. a good team is going to win, and a good team is going to lose when you meet
maybe you'll get a chance to play celina, too, and then you can let us know who's best!

Wow, it took almost an hour to get to the end of this thread. There are some serious football fans in here.
After looking at the LH Stadium pics, I don't think I'll be able to get to LH early enough to get a seat. Can you watch the game from outside the stadium?
LHexPlayer
08-01-2008, 01:58 PM
If you are serious just bring a lawn chair and sit on the track on the vistors side. Teams have done that in the past. I guess you can also watch from the rail road tracks on the vistor side. That would be outside the stadium.

They've added on to the Stadium but you still have to get there early. If you are setting on the visitor side then I'd get there about 5:15. But that's because Burnet is close and brings a lot of People. I don't know how many travel with BW.

Jerry V has been a part of that offense for many years. He ran it with Bruce B in Gregory Portland. Offense is very hard to stop. Once your kids have bought into it (first few years), have then tasted success(recently), that machine will roll for quite some time. I hope they keep their coach happy...he is a good guy. Cant predict who will win, but Bwood will have to play for 4 full quarters.
