This team is okay. I'm looking forward to the 2012 team more though when we'll actually have three centers on the team instead of just one.

I know it is a few years early for this but I need to point out some time differences. We know China is 13 hours ahead of us because right now it is about 2:30 P.M. Monday here in China it is Tuesday morning at 3:30 A.M.

In four years the olympics will be in London, England and right now it is 2:30 P.M. Monday here it is 8:30 P.M. Monday there. That means London is only 6 hours ahead of us so we should be able to get more live coverage here during the day.

A nice merged together Olympic thread could talk about the overexposure of a very talented young swimmer and 16 year olds who look 10 and could get a perfect score from the judges even when they trip.

Did you watch the Women's 100 meter hurdles? I think we have the top 3 qualifying times for the upcoming final. I need to figure out when that will be.

I only caught the last out on our women's softball game last night. I keep missing them since they are being broadcast on that HD channel (I forget to check it).

You actually understand what he says? He is doing Gallery Furniture ads here in the Houston area. What a waste of time and money. I thought maybe it was just my poor hearing, but my wife says she doesn't understand him either.

Guess it's a good thing I know he's speaking English. Or is he?

I agree ziggy29. What is frustrating is that the judges are not consistent and unfair at times and show partiality to some athletes. If they were fair and consistent I would overlook an occassional error. They take off more points for an error for different athletes that make the same mistakes. And overlook falls for some instead of others. And don't get me started again on the age rule violations. I can't say the judges were acting in good faith on this. In fact I think they were going to cheat us out of the overall woman's gymnist performances but they seemed to have been stopped by one of the Russians oversight watchers thank goodness.

The USA had a tough time but advanced to the Gold Medal game in softball by beating Japan in 9 innings 4 - 1. It could have gone either way. Japan had a chance in the 8th inning but had two costly fly balls in the infield that hurt them. Japan, Canada and Australia will fight it out to see who gets to the gold and bronze medal games. It is a wierd setup but hey it is what helped us in Sydney 8 years ago.

Phil C
08-20-2008, 08:23 AM
Shawn Johnson won a close one in getting the gold medal in the high beam over her American teammate. It was close and could have gone either way. The judges got it right there but they didn't deduct the Chinese girl enough and let her get the bronze therefore cheating the Romanians (or maybe the Russians) out of the bronze in my opinion.

Unfortunately that is also a factor AP. And I think they sometimes are partial to reputation and give too much or don't deduct some teams because they probably feel they are good and don't deduct and it is probably due to inexperience as well as incompetency. Still it isn't right.

I remember back in the 70s the AP band was always awarded a 3 or 4 in contests on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being the highest. The band teacher worked very hard and so did the band and they did a good job (at least as far as getting a 2 is concerned) and he was so sure that they got a 2 that when they got a 3 he knew they had judged by reputation and he let the judges have it.

We are ahead in the overall medal count over China by 81 to 79. We have 26 gold, 27 silver and 28 bronze. China has 45 gold, 14 silver and 20 bronze. Bear in mind that if we took out the subjective events it would be much closer in the gold medal count. I don't think we can catch China in gold but we should ease away in the total count. Jamaica has been killing us in the track and field events. I think part of the problem is that they get training in the USA by USA coaches.

Phil C
08-20-2008, 10:40 AM
China has been winning the gold count mainly in subjective events but they are good at those events. The documentaries have been on tv and shows how they do it. Remember they are a communist country (and I use communist loosely because it is more socialism that the "real" communism advocated by Karl Marx). They hand pick athletes as young as three years of age and spend much money training them and they do it with the best facilities and best coaches for years. Remember they don't have to rely on donations because everything is supported by the State. And they have over a billion people to choose from so they can get lots of good athletes in all sports over a period of time. In the USA it is difficult for lots of good athletes who have to count on sponsors. Shawn Johnson's parents had to take out several mortgates on their home and make much sacrifices to keep their daughter in training. It paid off but what about the people who are not as fortunate or can't afford it and have to give it up. There is no telling how many potentially good athletes we have lost. Plus our athletes have to be careful for the amature status so they can get a college scholarship. That is not a problem for the Chinese athletes. As pointed out they have over a billion people so they have many athletes to choose from and they provide them at the State's expense the best training and coaching and facilities and a great life.

China has put its best foot forward in the olympics but remember these documentaries are only showing what they want us to see. The poverty and slums in this country are not being shown so we aren't seeing the whole picture.

Spearmon for the USA finished 3rd in the 200 and while he was celebrating at the finish line he was told he was disqualified for running out of his late. Couple hours later his coach filed a protest saying that the 2nd place finisher Martina (Netherlands) did the same thing. After reviewing the race they found that it was true and both of them were disqualified which opened up a chance for Crawford (USA) and Dix (USA) to get the silver and bronze behind Bolt.... WOW

But it does show that it doesn't guarantee that the USA will always win the gold medal. That may help get it reinstated for at least the 2016 Olympics.

The Dutch upset us for the gold in women's water polo. Softball and this. Come on Ladies. The silver is great but let's get some gold medals. And I'm not sure about the women's basketball team against Russia. They were ahead 33 to 32 at half but they are playing sloppy and getting outplayed bad by the Russians and it isn't just Becky doing it. They are missing shots even when they have three chances and missing free throws. Come on Ladies! Step it up! We had the ball in the last seconds of the half and let them steal it for a last second shot to bring it within one. :(

Right now we have 93 medals (28 gold, 34 silver, 31 bronze) to 83 for China (46 gold, 15 silver, 22 bronze0 and Russia follows with 51. We lost out on some sports in getting the gold but we never would have caught China. Hopefully we will get in the 100s before it is over but it won't be thanks to our 400 m relay teams that dropped the batons. :(

Our women's soccer team is playing Brazil a good game. It is in OT and tied 0 - 0. I don't have any updates as to what is happening. I think they play two 15 minutes overtimes and they play each one through even if one scores. If it is still tied it will come down to free kicks.

Phil C

If you watch the women's diving finals there are two young Chinese divers that are very good. They are both listed as 15 and 16 and in my opinion they look it. If you see them look at them closer and compare them to the gymnist and it makes you wonder about the young gymnist.

We are down to the last few days of the 2008 Olympics. They end with the last day celebration this Sunday. It should be awesome.

Phil C

I think the USA is the only team that will get at least 100 or more medals now. We have 95 overall with 29 gold, 34 silver and 32 bronze. China still has 83 overall with 46 gold, 15 silver and 22 bronze.

I have developed a grading system based not only on the number of medals as they go by but also value on the medals. Due to the subjective nature and close competition I have assigned each medal the following values. For the reasons mentioned I have valued them close but it takes a lot of work patience and luck to get to the olympics in the first place. I gave gold a value of 1.2 point, silver 1.1 point, and bronze 1.0 point.
Under this system the USA still leads China by 103.2 points to 89.1 points.

I have heard her parents are very upset and indignant at the acusations. Remember the Chinese pride themselves at being good in business but they feel that honor, integrity and honesty is most important. It is a cultural thing. Remember it was Confusious that originally said "Honesty is the best policy."

Phil C

As of right now with about 2 days of final events the USA has broken into the 100s in total medals with 102 (31 gold, 36 silver, 35 bronze) and China has 89 (47 gold, 17 silver, 25 bronze). A lot of the Chinese medals are in subjective events such as gymnists and diving. We won't catch them in the gold medal count but we will add more medals in the finals and get probably close to the 110 range. I think China will make in the 90s but I don't think they will get in the 100 range.

Overall there were some disappointments such as our softball and water polo letting us down along with our 400 m relay teams dropping the baton and beating themselves but still these olympics are going to be a great success for us. More on that later.

It was late last night but our men's beach volleyball team also won gold! They beat the Brazil team. It is Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser. It was a great match with the first two games being close. We won Game 1 23 to 21 in a close one after being behind 1 - 6 but we chipped away at the lead and won it. We lost Game 2 21 to 17 after blowing a 13 to 10 lead. The last game was to 15 points but we blew it open and won easily. Phil was magnificient and had about 6 blocked shots that built us up to a 9 - 1 lead. Steven Lopez wins the bronze in Taekwondo. He was cheated by the officials of a chance to get the gold medal and his coach filed a protest to no avail. He had won the gold the last two olympics. You can't blame the coach but this controversy may end this sport in the olympics because I think it was barely hanging on. This is probably because once again the Europeans are mad because only Americans or Asians win these events.

A similar thing to softball because Americans, Asians or Australins always win the medals and baseball where Americans, Asians, Cuba or South Americans win. And wait you see that long walk race event they have.

Just a mater of time where they will have "whispering" or hold-em poker or whatever it is.

Well, if that's the case they should eliminate all track and field running and hurdling events under 800 meters, as those are all won by Americans or Jamaicans.

Ziggy - shhhhhhhhhh! (Don't give them any ideas!) :)

Just watched the end of the US-Communists semi-final in men's volleyball (which I'm guessing was a replay). Good to see us hold on and win that one in 5. It'll be our first trip to the Gold Medal game since the Seoul Olympics 20 years ago.

US is up on Spain 69-61 at the half (We're shooting 65 percent, but they're shooting an equally blistering 61 percent). We can't miss, but Spain isn't missing much either. Wade is having an amazing game thus far. He's been the difference for us in this game.

Wade has 21 at the half. Rudy Fernandez has 13 to lead Spain and Pau Gasol has 9. He and his brother Marc (His brother is so much bigger than he is and I wish LA would've been able to retain his rights, but oh well.) have done a pretty good job at making us play from the perimeter. Dwight Howard has just been horrific. He had a boneheaded takedown of Pau and really hasn't done anything at all to help out on either end. He keeps playing like this he won't be the starting center on the 2012 team. That honor will go to either Oden or Bynum. Bosh hasn't been much to write home about either. He looks completely lost against the zone.

If Fernandez plays anything close to this well with Portland oh boy...The West is going to just be a three team race for the next decade between the Blazers, Hornets and Lakers if this guy pans out and gives them an actual point guard.

118-107 Final...Spain got within 2 with 8 minutes left in the game, but could never get the lead. Wade carried us offensively through 3 and a half quarters and Bryant closed it out down the stretch with several key baskets, including a 4 point play. He fouled Rudy Fernandez out on that play and played some great defense as well. Gasol played amazing for Spain as he was virtually unstoppable in the 2nd half. He just embarrassed Howard and Bosh repeatedly. If you didn't see the Fernandez dunk on Howard that got an And 1 you missed out. My gosh that was a great dunk. Fernandez had an awesome game overall.

That game was everything you'd want to see in a game of that magnitude. Great game from both teams, but I sure am glad we pulled away at the end and brought the Gold Medal back where it belongs at!

I was a bit nervous, but never was worried because we have the best closer in the world in Bryant playing for us. No way we were losing that game. That was the best team we've sent to the Olympics since the Dream Team. This team was really good, but 2012 should be better when we have 2 or 3 centers on the team (Oden and Bynum being the possibilities along with Howard.)...

I dont know we will see it depends on who all they get to sign on for the 2012 Olympics its a guards game over there. But it will probably play in the favor of the U.S. going to the regulation NBA lane. I dont know if the 2012 team can top the Kobe/Lebron/Wade combination.

It was a good win and we won! It was close though. Remember one of Spain's best players was injured even though I don't see how he could have played better than his replacement. The only thing we needed and I think we would have really dominated was a big tall rough center to get rebounds and put a fight for us in the middle. A great win.

Our ladies also won by beating Australia in basketball for the gold medal. A great job by the ladies. The only thing was we showed a lack of class in the last few seconds. One of our players had the ball as time was running out. She was dribbling out the last few seconds when one of the players near the basket was wide open and called for the ball. She threw her the ball but fortunately she missed the shot as time expired. Let's be more classy next time ladies. Otherwise great game and super job at bringing home the gold.
