This is a great movie starring Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster and was produced by Burt Lancaster's company. It was made in beautiful color and filmed in Mexico and is set in 1866 when American outlaws, ex soldiers, and others went to Mexico to sell their service in Mexico's battle for freedom against the French. Gary Cooper plays a Louisiana plantation ower and ex Confederate Officer who goes to Mexico to try to raise money to start a new life. Lancaster plays the leader of outlaws.
Also included in the supporting cast are future stars such as Charles Bronson as Pittsburth, Ernest Borgnine as Donnegan, Caesar Romeo as a French Officer, Jack Elam as Tex and Henry Brandon as Capt. Dannette (Brandon was later to give a great performance as John Wayne's Indian enemy in the great western The Searchers a few years later).

The movie was made for $1.57 M (remember this was in 1954) which did not include Gary Cooper's salary of $1M. Cooper's salary was very high for that time but he didn't want to go to Mexico to make this movie but Lancaster and his other producers knew that his name along with his would draw many viewers and would be worth it. It was as the movie was a big hit and in the first few months it grossed over $11M.

Don't miss this one if you haven't seen it as it has three former oscar winners (Cooper, Lancaster and Borgnine) as well as future stars such as Charles Bronson. It is a great western and be sure sure to watch out for Burt Lancaster's shootout with Charlie that happens during the first part of the movie.
