EXTREMELY expensive.. My dad just got back from there last week for work - he emailed me pictures of those same buildings, etc... think of a part of America that is extremely rich, then multiply that about 5 times.

Dubai is awesome. Imagine if Vegas were a rusty swing set in your back yard....Dubai would be Disney World. Never seen anything else like it. The money that is there is unimaginable unless you see it for yourself.

That looks great, I have seen some of the same photos. They are well above us on technology and structural design. Thats for sure.

I like what Dubai is doing. 60 years ago that area is nothing more than a fishing village and now it's home to the world's tallest building. Just amazing.

They may be beyond us on what we are currently building but US firms are doing alot of the designing of these buildings.

No, they just want to spend the money to build all of those.

If the people in the U.S. wanted an artificial island palm tree we there would be one.

And ... we wonder why our forefathers allowed slavery?

With slavery or general economic oppression, you can accomplish a lot in a short time.

Also, the oppression of women also accelerates advancement. :D

Perhaps we should rethink our society? ;)

I can remember walking through there and there were harley davidsons for sale, masaratis, etc. etc. it was amazing.

A muslim country, situated right in the heart of the Middle East...this is what the other countries in the M.E. could be with all their wealth... if only the moderates win out over the radical extremists, and of course the despots and thugs are removed from power.

It's not out of the realm of possibilities that in the future Baghdad could look similar...though they never can have this level of wealth, they could be an example of what can be done in the M.E. if the average guy has a say in his future.

I had a job offer to go manage some building projects in Dubai. I checked into it when they told me that my housing allowance would be 100k for the year. Later I found out that I would have to have a room-mate in order to be able to live in a decent apartment while working there. Rent for a nice two bedroom condo in Dubai is 15K a month! Still may go before it's over just for the adventure.
