TASO meetings start Monday. Every chapter needs officials. If you REALLY love football and want to get into games for free then join and start officiating.

Ebay can make things a lot more affordable than you might think.

I've seriously thought about this. Maybe after I'm done with grad school.

In the Abilene chapter you typically start out working six man games and the initial start up cost to you is 200-250 bucks. Kind of steep when your only making $30-$40 a game.

People worry more about gas prices affecting HS Sports they'd better worry about the ref shortage

yes - in softball the UIL has proposed only paying 1 umpire for mileage, among other things ... lets see how the schools react when they get 1 umpire for a 5A varsity district game!

It can eventually pay off. I have a friend (Ruben Fowler) that retired from Austin Fire Department and is now an umpire in the NFL. The money isn't too bad considering they only work 16 games with a week in between.

The money this year may be worse than last year. I do it for the Friday nights. I would do Fridays for free. However, I expect to be paid enough to make it worth my time on the other nights (and it is for the most part).

If you are young and need a few extra bucks then it is worth it. If you love Friday nights and are a little older, it is worth it.

I was 36 when I started and I have called 1 state championship (not in Texas) and a lot of very good games.

No, but it has happened before. A rookie chain crew official threw a flag during a game.

I figure after 20 years and 1 knee replacement, I have done my time with T A S O

That's OK, I took your place on the crew. I sat with them at the meeting tonight and they both look good.

Coon is still calling with us and he is doing well. Dad and Kelb are both fine also.

I looked at our crew info tonight and it says the we have 149 combined years (we are old). We really have more but most of mine is out of state.

I really miss calling with the crew, Grandpa kept me laughing, I remember on night at Chili's in Temple, I looked up and GP was patting the young waitress on the butt, I told her when we left that GP had tipped he well, her answer was that for free feel, he had better
