I've been putting together pages for the winningest coaches of all time and for some reason I cannot get my numbers to match those that seem to be pretty accepted for the all-time win-loss record of Gordon Wood. I'm 1 win short of the 396 wins that is his current accepted win total. If someone happens to know anything more about his career, please let me know so I can get my totals correct.

The link to the page I've setup:

You are right about the numbers; Gordon often said that the number of wins he was credited with was too high. I remember him stating so publicly several times. What I don't remember is the correct numbers. The 396 sounds right though. Sorry I couldn't help you.

At one time he was listed with a little over 400, I want to say 402 or something, but then something happened and they discovered there was an error and 396 was made as the correct number.

Here's Gordon's win-loss record as I have it:

School Win-Loss-Tie

Rule 1940-41: 5-11-2

Haskell 1942: 1-0

Served in US Navy 1942-1944

Roscoe 1945-46: 16-2-2

Seminole 1947-49: 19-9-3

Winters 1950: 6-4

Stamford 1951: 9-1
1952: 13-1
1953: 11-1
1954: 9-1
1955: 15-0
1956: 15-0
1957: 8-2

Victoria 1958: 6-4
1959: 6-3-1

Brownwood 1960: 13-1
1961: 8-1-1
1962: 11-1
1963: 8-2
1964: 7-2-1
1965: 14-0
1966: 8-2
1967: 12-1-1
1968: 9-3
1969: 11-3
1970: 12-1-1
1971: 10-3
1972: 6-4
1973: 9-1
1974: 11-1-1
1975: 8-2
1976: 10-2
1977: 13-1
1978: 15-0
1979: 10-3
1980: 8-3-1
1981: 13-1
1982: 9-3
1983: 8-4
1984: 6-3-1
1985: 8-4

Totals: 396 Wins, 91 Losses, 15 Ties

For some reason, the two years he spent at Rule and the three years at Seminole were not broken down by each year.

Ok.... the only difference between your numbers and mine is in 1978.

Didn't Brownwood lose to Abilene Cooper in the first game of the season 22-31? I have them as 14-1-0 that season.

That's how I only ended up with 395

http://idisk.mac.com/cboehme69-Public/stats/brownwood78.gif What happened is that Abilene Cooper played an ineligible player in 78' and had to forfeit all the games that particular player had played in that season, thus the 15-0 record for the 78' season.

Thank you very much. That answers my question. The numbers match now.
