District 5 3A

PLAYOFF TEAMS - Bridgeport, Vernon, Burkburnett

------------------------------------------------------

BURKBURNETT (enrollment 936)
2007 record – 8-4

Returns some talent.
On offense returns QB Jason Beach (2nd team AD) and RB Jay Gould (2nd team AD). If that’s not enough try 3 offensive linemen which includes 1st team AD Trent Sharp 6’0” 300lbs, 2nd team AD center Tommy Dalke 6’0” 215lbs and newcomer of the year Lorenzo Barnes 6’0” 300lbs. Not a bad start to an offense.

On defense, some players on this squad play both ways. Gould is one of them and will return to play safety where he gained 1st team AD honors. Joining him in two way duty is Beach(2nd team AD) at the other safety. Dalke returns to play defensive line where he made 2nd team AD. At linebacker 6’2” 200 lbs Derek Dowling (2nd team AD) returns.

Derek Devereaux returns to handle the kicking duties and he made 2nd team AD.

Overall this team will be tough and should make the playoffs but lack of depth deep in games will hurt them. Region 1 is loaded with talent. A Div 1 playoff win is probably out of reach as they will have to face a team the likes of China Spring, Fredricksburg, or Burnet in the second round.
District 5 will get a bye in the first round as there is not a district 6.

-----------------------------------------

BRIDGEPORT (661)
2007 record 7-4
returns 29 lettermen
7 offensive starters
7 defensive starters

Well, how many teams in Texas can claim they are returning both the offensive and defensive district MVPs of 2007. Chalk up Bridgeport.
On offense the Bulls return offensive MVP and Honorable Mention All State in Cameron Green at quarterback. He threw for 2,790 yards and 15 TDs. He also rushed for over 700 yards to be a huge duel threat. Joining him on offense is one of his favorite targets in WR Dustin Krebs (2nd team AD) who last season caught 32 passes for over 500 yards. On the line offensive lineman Erick Serafin, 275lbs (2nd team AD) also returns and will be helped out in the trenches by Stewart Price (285 lbs), Corey Henson (225 lbs) and Will Horner (255lbs) to make one of the biggest lines in 3A.

On defense the other MVP returns in Jr. Linebacker Zach Braken (6’0” 210lbs.)(111 tackles). Braken was also chosen to the All Region Team. Other first team all district players return in defensive backs Corbin Green (6 ints) and Dustin Krebs. Green is expected to also handle the running back duties this season. Trevor Schuett (2nd team AD) also returns to make this the best secondaries in the region.

With this much talent retuning from 2007 things look good for the Bulls. A second round matchup in the playoffs with Liberty Hill or Wimberley may be a possibility.

----------------------------------

VERNON (603)
2007 record 12-2
Returns 36 lettermen
3 offensive starters
6 defensive starters

District Champs last season but this year will be hard to repeat that feat for the Lions.
The do return one of the states top 3A running backs in Craig Whiteside (6’1” 190 lb). Last season he was 1st team AD, 2nd Team All Region, and Honorable Mention All State while rushing for 1390 yds and scoring 11 tds. Ryan Smith will take over at QB (6’0” 210lbs). Up front Bryson Henry (6’1” 245) leads the way with help from Jarod David, Adrian Hernandez, and Joseph Baker.
On defense, 3 Lions got district honors last year. Whiteside had double duty as he also gained 1st team AD while playing linebacker tallying 72 season tackles. Joining him on first team was lineman Kyle Echols (6’2” 235 lbs) who had 80 tackles. Echols was also an ALL REGION selection. Defensive end Chris McGrew (6’3” 215lbs) had 63 tackles and 9 sacks and was a 2nd team AD selection. The Lions has another good linebacker in Jesus Lora who added 108 tackles.
Should be the number 3 team in the playoffs. But hey, its Texas football. Anything can happen.

DECATUR (855)
2007 record 6-5
Returns 23 lettermen
3 offensive starters
4 defensive starters

The Eagles will make a push for the third playoff spot behind an offense that returns several weapons.
The newcomer of the year last season returns in QB Tim Metts. Last season he completed 58% of his passes while pilling up over 2,300 yards and 22 TDs. He has two great targets back Chad Harrison (6’1” 190, 4.5) (1st team AD) and 2nd team AD Zach Zamzow. Harrison averaged 18 yards per catch and scored 7 times. At running back, Matthew Huddleston will see the bulk of the carries after gaining over 350 yards last year and averaging 5.9 yards per carry.

The Eagle defense will be led by LB Reece Madden (5’11” 175lbs)(1st team AD) who had 101 tackles and Defensive Back Kole Fuller (1st team AD). Other key defensive players will be LB Justin Tompkins (6’0” 200 lbs) and Def. End Nick Martinez (6’1” 225 lbs).

With the help of a 8-2 Junior Varsity squad, the Eagles have to weapons to push the top teams in this district week end and week out.

-----------------------------------------

IOWA PARK (600)
2007 record 4-6
7 returning lettermen
2 offensive starters
2 defensive starters

The cupboard was left pretty bare after graduation and will have a tough time winning many games in district.
The offense does return a top running back as 2nd team AD Richard Smoak (6’1” 185lbs) will have to shoulder the load. Last season he averaged 6.6 yards every time he touched the ball. The only other offensive starter that is back is lineman Chauncey Rose (6’2” 265 lbs.). Help this year will come from RB Lee Chubb, Center Caleb England (6’0” 250lbs.) and Lineman Justin Thacker (6’0” 250lbs). The QB position will be handles by Jesse Harris (6’2” 180lbs).

On defense Smoak is a two way player. He will get help from DT Ryan Beals (6’1” 270lbs) and LB Dustin Palmer (5’11” 160 lbs.).

In summary, it may be a long season for the Hawks.

-------------------------------------

HIRSCHI (764)
2007 record 3-7
Returns 16 lettermen
6 offensive starters
7 defensive starters

The Huskies have a lot of experience returning but will it be enough in this district.

The offense does return Marquise Wiley (6’1” 175lbs) at WR. Last season he was honored as 2nd team AD while catching 10 TDs. Joining him on offense will be RB Tevin Thomas, and OL Louis Garcia.

Defensively, the Huskies will be led by LB Demetrion Cooper (2nd team AD) and Wiley at DB (2nd team AD).

Like most districts in Region 1, this is a tough district. The Huskies may be lucky to win one district game. Sorry Huskies.

Pretty impressive considering you've never seen any of these teams play, have no idea what they have to go with the returning starters, and got most of your info from what Dave Campbell already had listed. It's probably going to be a pretty close prediction.

This district will go down to the wire...as usual. Don't count anyone out, including IP and Hirschi. IP has a very talented QB moving up from the JV and Graduation was the best thing to happen to the Huskies. Good luck to all.

Burk would be my favorite to win this district, followed by Decatur and then........ it's a toss up.
Vernon's JV and Fish teams didn't show anything this past year, so there won't be much help moving up.
Iowa Park has a couple of good soph's coming in.... Clubb and Tucker.
Will be a good district to watch this year. Very competitive from top to bottom. If WF Hirschi can get back on track to what they had in '06 it could be very interesting.
