Looking at a 50" Sanyo at Wal-Mart for $995...............sounds like a great price to me..............but what do i need to be looking for? There is so much information to know about TV's today. Somebody please break it down for me in simple English that I can understand.

Get the highest resolution (at least 1080 p) you possibly can

Sanyo is a cheaper brand. My aunt bought a Sanyo in Dec. '06 and had to replace it by Dec. '07. I'm not sure if that was just one bad lemon in the bunch or whether that is not a quality brand. My instincts tell me to steer away from Sanyo, but they do have a good picture. If it were me, and it's not, I would buy a Sony. The 53" Sony I bought in 2000 has the best picture of any TV I've ever owned. I will be upgrading sometime next year, though, to high definition, and I have a sneaking suspicion it will be a Sony, too.

I went with a 1080i Vizio also purchased at Wal Mart. More expensive than the Sanyo, had to buy the 47" but very good pic and have had no problems.

Anytime I look at TVs in a store with a big selection, the Sonys always have the best picture. I've been told that it's because they have the highest Contrast Ratio.

I like my panasonic. But I always recommend a smaller screen unless you are in a big room. I have a 32 inch and sit 10 to 15 feet away and it works fine. I could go 37 but 32 seems great at that range and the picture quality is better on smaller screens. So unless you spend big bucks the large screens do not compare as well. Samsung does pretty well with larger screens for the money.

I bought a 42 inch Philips plasma with ambient lighting about 14 months ago and love it, but I do think Sony and Samsung have better pictures. I think Samsung even has a better picture than Sony, and is cheaper.
