This is a historical legend because Billy the Kid is known for spending time at and near El Paso, Texas before he moved on to New Mexico. One time he had stayed in Laredo, Texas but caught a stage to Fort Worth. He rode the train to El Paso. A friend was supposed to meet them at a Depot about 20 miles from El Paso where the train stopped for water. His friend was supposed to stay at a small town about 15 miles northeast of the Depot and then meet the Kid at the water stop with an extra horse so they could ride to Mexico. However the kid's friend got drunk and bragged how he was to meet the kid in the morning. Three gunfighters found out about it and brought the friend drinks. They decided to meet the kid themselves and make a name for themselves by killing the kid. The next day the kid's friend was passed out drunk and they rode to the depot. One was in front of the depot and his two friends were waiting in ambush. The train stopped and got water but no kid. As the train drove off they all met with the one in front of the depot and were heading back to town when the kid appeared as the train passed by.
The Kid asked them what happened to his friend and they told him that he had got drunk and so they came in his place. The Kid said "Thank you for coming in his place and bringing me a horse."
The leader said "You're out of luck though. We only brought three horses."
The kid said "No. Actually you brought two too many."
The men went for their guns then and in an instant all three were lying dead and the Kid went and got one of the horses and rode away to Mexico. His friend tried to catch up with him later but was caught near El Paso and put in jail.
This incident is shown without the kid at the beginning of the great Henry Fonda and Charles Bronson western "Once Upon a Time in the West."
The Kid found out his friend was in jail and rescued him by going by the jail late at night and pretended he was a deputy with a prisoner. They guard opened the door and the Kid locked him up and he and his friend fled to Mexico.
